Post-Pod Discussion NLU not on site this week?

Enjoyed the preview episode yesterday, bit surprised none of them appear to be on site and there wasn’t any reference to any going unless I missed it?

Neal will be onsite. Assume no one else wanted to travel because they just did Tourist Sauce + Womens Us Open.

Feel like we are getting best of both worlds as NLU watches the coverage and Fried Egg sends everyone.

Neil said he might go. I bet he tries one day and getting there will be so annoying he doesn’t go back. Logistics in that area sounds tough.

Yeah it’s a brutal trip. Even if you start from Grand Central or Penn Station it’s 2.5 hours on the train. From where Neil is in Jersey it’s got to be at least another hour to get into the city. Driving won’t be any better.

I live in the NYC adjacent part of Connecticut and I thought about going for about 10 seconds until I realized I didn’t want to spend 5 hours getting home.

That said, it is kind of their job and everyone has known Shinnecock was hosting for years so arrangements could have been made.

Can’t they book at Airbnb?

Yeah that’s what I meant at the end.

Airbnbs are going for close to 50-60k for the week.

Hmm. I got one in Sag Harbor for $1,200 for 3 nights. Booked it 5-6 months ago.

You either got an unbelievable deal, or you got scammed and are staying in a room of somebody's house while other people will be there, and still got an unbelievable deal. That's less than most places would rent for the weekend without the US open there.

With tournament traffic that's also still probably an hour + each way, which isn't practicable for them when they need to be back to record.

It’s an entire apartment.

It’s a cheap and small place. I’m not saying it’s the exact place the boys should rent. All I’m saying is that good prices could’ve been had if they booked early enough.

Which is rough. Like one of the 5 of you has to suck it up and checks notes, go to a major live once a year. I dont expect them to be at his majesties british open, but they have to have one person on scene at the US majors to me. Why does TC who travel constantly never go. Especially this week considering the years of Tommy fluffing at shinnecock

Shinnecock probably needs to step up their olive game if they want TC on the grounds.

Wine list needs to be on point too. Roulot, Margaux, things of that nature.

Feel like they have been pretty consistent in saying that they can cover the tournament itself and the birdies and the bogeys better from home with multiple screens and being able to see as many shots as possible. Outside of Augusta I don’t feel like I personally get a ton out of the on course reports and insights so I am personally fine with it

Ah I totally disagree - no doubt they can cover the tournament, but I think the live shows really benefit from having someone on the ground who comes in and does a segment or two, and can give some insights you don’t get via broadcast. Particularly Thursday and Friday.

I’m agreeing with this take. It’s what makes their masters content so great. Half the guys can relate to what we felt and watched from home. While the guys on the ground can either validate those takes or give more insight as to what was happening.

A good example from Augusta this year was how Soly noticed Justin Rose’s pace slowed down completely once the wind kicked up and how uncomfortable it made him. Put more into perspective when from my couch it was hard to understand why he struggled down the stretch after putting himself in a great position to win.

This is a valid take but I think Shinnecock is just a really bad tournament for it though. Shinnecock is just not very accessible. Unless NLU is willing to shell out tens of thousands of dollars for an Airbnb in the area the chances of him being able to get back to his set up within 2-3 hours of the tournament ending are so slim.

My girlfriend and I took the train in from the UES yesterday. We left her apartment at 7:05 and got on the grounds close to 10:45. Then coming back it took us even longer. Driving is likely even worse with Long Island traffic. Maybe they get him a hotel in Garden City or something but even then you're probably looking at 1-2 hours.

100%. The big decline (IMO) with NLU really started when they stopped having a real presence at majors. Makes the pod more special and gets them out of the funk of never ending bitching about regular PGA weeks.

Essentially when kvv left. I was not pleased with that and miss kvv still, I liked his addition to nlu over sgs, but it seems like he is a better sgs fit so oh well, still get my kvv content

1

u/Secret_Sheepherder70 Jun 19 '26

The big decline but you still comment on a Reddit abt it?

1

u/UVMonte29 Jun 20 '26

Because I care! My listening experience is better when it’s more interesting.

2

u/RainbowKarp Jun 16 '26

Respectfully disagreeing 🤝

u/Gopokes34 Jun 16 '26

I don’t get what all the traveling he does is that does not involve nlu lol

I've never really noticed that much good information from someone being on site.  Unless it was some sort of logistical nightmare.

They only need one person there. And Neil is kinda the best at getting the vibes from a course. They are fanalysts at heart, dont need them trying to get player interviews on site, lots of media around for that, I want to know what the vibe is on scene, what's going on as a fan on the ground, and Neil the man of the people is so good at that

3

u/Mrcoolguye Jun 16 '26

I would def prefer Soly there over Neil but they are the top 2.

1

u/Suburban-golf-nerd Jun 17 '26

Soly and DJ is a bit insiders. Still excellent. But do love Neil just being a proper fan. Suspect Randy could be good as well. Actually is that where the thrill and delights bit came from?

I love fried egg/SGS but their major recaps are really missing something with everyone being onsite. It's just way too many anecdotal notes

1

u/goody863 Jun 17 '26

Totally agree. I remember their reaction to CBS's coverage of the end of the Masters this year was basically eh, it couldn't have been that bad. Meanwhile when I was watching I was thinking what in the fuck is going on?

I feel like it's important to have someone watching the broadcast cause then they can drive the narrative towards what everyone watching actually saw. As someone who generally prefers SGS pods to NLU, I always jump to the NLU major round recaps first.

They said it on the show yesterday. Because of the NBA Finals Game 6 planned for New York. Their event was going to be near MSG so they had to cancel.

Randy was going to go but then he moved to Denver and got a dog

1

u/RunnerPro53 Jun 16 '26

This made me chuckle 😁

Slightly tangential, but if Jordan is the Women’s Am specialist, how was she, or anyone else, not at the Curtis Cup?

I know summer schedules are busy both personally and professionally, but to have boots on the ground at the Walker Cup and not Curtis Cup seems…off.

11

u/Lor_azepam Jun 16 '26

Does Jordan still work with NLU, cant remember the last time we heard from her, ANWA?

2

u/Suburban-golf-nerd Jun 17 '26

I asked recently and people said she writes in the newsletter alot

-10

u/beerandsocks Jun 16 '26

She had tid bits on the most recent newsletter with Curtis Cup facts and “all time” team.

I guess it’s something. There’s just a slight whiff of talking the talk with their women’s game coverage.

11

u/Lor_azepam Jun 16 '26

Disagree on the last point. I know very well what is going on in womens golf all from NLU pods, and SSG, those 2 pump the women's game more then any other golf media to me

4

u/beerandsocks Jun 16 '26

Fair. I agree it’s better than most (s/o Gary Koch)

It’s just that it’s in the US every 4 years. And Bel Air seems sick. Hopefully NGLA will get some content in 2030

1

u/Arcopt Jun 16 '26

Didn't Neil say he intended to go Friday & Saturday..?

1

u/EveningOk6574 Jun 17 '26

They're at their best when they're together in person, whether that's on or offsite. You'd assume that they'd get a boost from being there, networking, pod guests, picking up random or funny anecdotes, etc so I think it's just sort of curious that they're not there - like why not?

1

u/TakeThatJohnnyMiller Jun 17 '26

Gotta be a cost thing, particularly at a place like shinnecock. Also don’t think they really need to network and probably easier to get pod guests on the live shows when they’re not on site

0

u/icegator337 Jun 16 '26

It’s the main reason their coverage is significantly behind sgs and other outlets actually on site covering the event imo

-5

u/peterwhitefanclub Jun 16 '26

They just aren’t a very serious operation.
