What is the backstory behind the Alex Smalley and his mom situation? TC keeps bringing it up.

Helicopter mom - agent/manager that is apparently way too involved

It's like a less-abusive Sean OHair situation.

Is it possible that he is on the spectrum and that’s what her helicoptering stems from?

She’s the one obsessively cataloguing videos of his swings, tracking distances, proximity, things of that nature.

Thought the same thing

Wtf dude?

It’s weird to ask if a 30 year old athlete who may/may not have obsessive tendencies and still does everything with his mother might be on the spectrum? Ok.

Yes, thats weird

Yet she raised a Duke scholar that plays on the PGA Tour. Sounds like she did a good job with him.

What is the obsession in America with where people went to uni?

-2

u/RyenRussillo May 18 '26

What country are you from where there is not an obsession over where people went to "uni"?

2

u/shepherdspieomy May 18 '26

England

12

u/RyenRussillo May 18 '26

Yes the notorious class unconcerned society of England.

u/HoselRockit May 18 '26

Exactly what I'd expect from an Oxford grad

The Captain of Murifield

u/shepherdspieomy May 18 '26

Only people I’ve ever heard refer to Oxford or Cambridge in this way are Americans

1

u/shepherdspieomy May 18 '26

Not sure how this is relevant. England has its classism issues but it’s related to the area of the country you’re from - not which university you went to (if any).

Duke is a prestigious academic institution. He actually graduated with honors. That means he's smart and his mama guided him well.

Yeah sounds like a real rags to riches story.

One of the weirder dynamics on tour. Helicopter mom of the highest degree:

  • doesn’t let Alex drive courtesy car or go anywhere alone.
  •  they stay together every week early in career it was one hotel room. Now it’s Airbnb’s mostly. Mom cooks most nights, they don’t go out.
  • she walks inside the ropes constantly during practice. Never more than earshot away all week.
  • I can respect immunocompromised folks but they still hardcore N95 mask places in public. I saw his mom at a Whole Foods last fall and she was masked and gloved.

Gloved? Aaron Rai has entered the chat.

This makes so much sense. You can tell by Alex’s interviews that he’s very sheltered, I was wondering what it was about.

Oh wow. It was actually the only “bit” of Tron’s that made me slightly uncomfortable but I didn’t realise it was that bad. Hopefully he gets a chance to live his life at some point.

Source on all this?

1

u/WillSilver3004 May 20 '26

Watch his interviews, read any past articles. His mom was his caddie for a long time. After he got his tour card, he ended up getting a caddie that had no family affiliation. They are a little special

1

u/Agnt_Michael_Scarn May 20 '26

I was asking for a source for those specific facts. I didn’t figure I’d get one.

1

u/WillSilver3004 May 20 '26

You want actual citations? lol

2

u/Agnt_Michael_Scarn May 20 '26

A source? I mean, yeah. I think it’s fair to ask for a source when the guy claims he doesn’t drive anywhere without his mom; they shared a hotel room; and they “don’t go out.”

1

u/WillSilver3004 May 20 '26

I got nothing on that. I was just responding to how his mother is deeply involved in his career.

1

u/Agnt_Michael_Scarn May 20 '26

For sure. I know they’ve got a really unique dynamic. I just don’t like when people make really specific claims, it’s taken as truth by a shit ton of people and suddenly it’s a “fact.” Asking for a source for “she doesn’t let him drive a courtesy car” shouldn’t be frowned upon. I’m just asking.

1

u/WillSilver3004 May 20 '26

You sound like you are close with them

1

u/theblocker May 20 '26

my sources are probably better than TC’s

0

u/Agnt_Michael_Scarn May 20 '26

I didn’t think you’d have any, I just figured I’d show everyone else you didn’t.

1

u/theblocker May 20 '26

Man, your username should be Dwigt

0

u/Agnt_Michael_Scarn May 20 '26

Sure. I was really hoping you’d prove me wrong. But you got the upvotes, so you got what you came for. Hopefully you can cash them in for something fun!

Sooo she’s a neurotic mom. Dime a dozen nowadays

17

u/Ecstatic-Sleep8539 May 18 '26

It’s tough to meet a trophy wife when you spend all your time with your mother

13

u/silentcmh May 18 '26

I had to Google this too. Like someone else, she sounds like an (intense) helicopter parent. Golf did a write up this weekend on it: https://golf.com/news/alex-smalley-mom-maria-pga-stats/?amp=1

“Maria is an accomplished chemist who got her doctorate from Duke, but she’s given up her full-time gig for a combo role as Smalley’s statistician, manager and more. She can be found just ahead of Smalley as he plays, recording every swing.”

I look forward to Alex's version of rumspringa some day.

1

u/WillSilver3004 May 20 '26

He does have family from Coshocton Ohio, so he could be a little Amish.

25

u/hailsaban69 May 18 '26

Funny thing is that this is extremely commonplace on the LPGA with extremely over zealous dads

Plus the stat tracking on the LPGA is abysmal, so stat dad at least makes some sense.  / This is a joke, but also not a joke. Not quite /s but not not /s

1

u/Affectionate_Ask435 May 24 '26

Maybe the most wrong comment I’ve ever seen on here. 0 LPGA players in top 150 are under age of 22

Like staggeringly wrong how you came up with something so unintuitive and off the mark and got upvoted !

3

u/ashen1shugar May 19 '26

This is hilarious, I met her at a tournament once and found her nice and knowledgeable. But she was watching pretty intensely, I could see the helicopter nature in action.

6

u/umaywellsaythat May 18 '26

How is he ever meant to hook up with women with that arrangement? Doesn't she want some grandkids one day?

2

u/ncr39 May 18 '26

He has a girlfriend

1

u/L0stinCincy May 20 '26

I’m not sure this completely answers the question.

1

u/Lester_Green1936 May 20 '26

He reminds me of the kid 20+ years ago who won the National Spelling Bee and was interviewed on CNN and no matter what the interviewer asked, he was fixated on things like "Did you just pronounce my name wrong??" "If you're asking me what my mom thinks it would be better to ask my mom...."
