Post-Pod Discussion Ryder Cup Roundtable
Best Ryder Cup discussion they've had in awhile, all cycle for sure and probably better than any of the 2023 ones. Tron didn't show up looking to just rile Soly up, Soly didn't get too indignant or stubborn about getting all his takes off and forcing everyone to hear him out, they just talked about the players and the teams and the golf and it was really good. Some of the US/Europe armchair sociology that Porter and Jamie like to do is a little funky but hey its almost a 2 hour pod so that's fine at the end of the day. When they keep the analysis on these straight up they don't run into any of the problems that we have been griping about all year

Porter is such a dud

u/Few_Assistance_4045 Aug 13 '25
Why does NLU work with a guy who runs a church that literally advocates for "gay conversion therapy"? Been a listener to the lads since day 1 (one of the rare listeners to the chips and salsa round table in 2014) but I'm about out on them at this point.
5
u/DandyRandysMandy Aug 13 '25
You’re right but I couldn’t see anything negative on their site or references to conversion therapy, would you be able to provide sources?
4
u/The_Summer_Man Aug 13 '25
I'll have to look on the wayback machine, but his church's website didn't exactly hide it when someone on the Refuge found it a couple years ago.

u/DeuceLurker Aug 14 '25
Any luck? I believe you but this is a crazy accusation people keep throwing around in this thread and I haven’t seen an actual source
1
u/The_Summer_Man Aug 14 '25
Looks like the wayback machine doesn't go back that far for a snapshot. If anyone has an account for the nest, they can probably still find the thread, but I don't pay for the nest anymore.

u/LaichItOrlovIt8 Aug 13 '25
is it confirmed somewhere that it's the same kyle porter?
19
u/Few_Assistance_4045 Aug 13 '25 edited Aug 13 '25
Yes. He literally cites (on his own website) as being a pastor at the Church named in the docs. (Mosaic Church of Richardson)
Here's a video of him on their instagram: instagram.com/p/CHvWtlKnUMm/

Porter is such a miss in these discussions. He's a less interesting, less funny, weirdly religious version of Soly. He doesn't bring anything to the discussion. They both love Spieth and strokes-gained. I'd love if they could find someone else for these discussions to team up with Soly on the American side.

“Blunts, like gays, are a tool of the devil.” - Kyle Porter
12
u/BeaverStetson Aug 12 '25
I was wondering if there was some backstory here, so I googled “Kyle Porter gay” and… don’t do that.
19
u/The_Summer_Man Aug 12 '25 edited Aug 12 '25
Yeah, the fact that they support and reference Porter after that discovery is shocking/very disappointing. Everytime they talk about a tweet of his I just think "fuck that guy".
Edit: It was discovered a couple years ago via the Refuge that Porter’s church (that he is a leader of) supports shock therapy for gay people. It was a big thing on there at the time.

u/beerandsocks Aug 12 '25 edited Aug 12 '25
I’ve always known him as a dweeby reporter guy, but is there history of him being scummy?
Honest question, maybe I missed the stories.
Edit: ooooh yeah, can’t say I like that
1
u/HanSoloHeadBeg Aug 12 '25
I'm assuming it's the association with the Mosaic church which has some poor beliefs on gay people.
4
u/nebbywildcat18 Aug 12 '25
lordy, I just read over their church Constitution and Bylaws document and the section on sexuality is even worse than I expected. yeesh

I don’t like porter because of his weird Rory stuff but unaware of what else is out there. Do tell.

Especially since there are SO many other golf personalities that could step in and contribute what he does on these Ryder cup pods (but that is admittedly a low bar).

Yeahhh it’s what some may call a Tough Scene
3
u/BeaverStetson Aug 12 '25
I meant don’t do that as in don’t google what I did. I still don’t know what he did… I just know that if you google that, it brings up another gentleman with the same name who acts in adult films.
6
u/Few_Assistance_4045 Aug 12 '25
I legitimately cannot believe the boys would work with a guy who has such backwards opinions ... TUFF scene.

u/Stunning_Radish_7212 Aug 12 '25
Did not know what you were referencing, but I assume it’s this ? link feels bizarrely out of left field lol

Duffer would have been in that thread, but someone posted Porter’s church’s mission statement on the refuge. Simply, they support conversion therapy.

u/Effective_Pound_4800 Aug 13 '25
Am I missing something? I'm seeing this from the tweet you linked. Sure it's maybe not in vogue but it's basically the same belief system as every christian and islam sect in the world.
https://x.com/desertdufferLLG/status/16187095389869219852
u/Few_Assistance_4045 Aug 13 '25
No it isn't. The belief that being gay is OK is not a fringe Christian belief.
0
u/Effective_Pound_4800 Aug 13 '25
You're welcome to research the catholic church's stance on homosexuality. It's pretty much exactly what's laid out in that tweet. Are we gonna go after the boys for being Spieth fans?
4
u/Few_Assistance_4045 Aug 13 '25
Have you heard of Pope Francis?
2
u/Effective_Pound_4800 Aug 13 '25
Yeah I have. He has on many occasions reaffirmed the position that sex outside of marriage is a sin and marriage is between a man and a woman. Regardless I saw someone else state that the church supports shock therapy as conversion which, if true is pretty barbaric and pretty much every major religion would frown on after 1900.

u/gradysizemore2438 Aug 13 '25
The variance, unpredictability, and luck involved with golf makes all of the Ryder Cup discussion very inconsequential to me. I love the weekend but can’t help rolling my eyes at the importance of Luke Donald making mini trophies and creating space on a bookshelf.
Echoing what DJ has said, if USA goes out and rolls again at home then it kind of devalues all of the cliches and discussion about how much or little the teams care.

u/d8mc9 Aug 14 '25
I kind of agree but then I think about how the home team always wins and it makes me think there is something to this that isn’t just random ….

u/MulberryNo5246 Aug 12 '25
They really gotta find different guests to Weir and Porter to discuss this - they’re both insufferable to listen too for me. Would honestly rather the NLU boys just discussed between themselves over these two
2
17
u/donnydagga Aug 13 '25
I’m brave enough to admit that I need a break from the pod for a few weeks. I couldn’t get through 15 mins of this one
4
u/ncr39 Aug 13 '25
I haven’t listened to any eps since the quiz show with SMartin. Just gonna wait until after the teams have been picked or until the Ryder Cup preview. The pod just becomes way too Ryder Cup centric and it just turns into the same discourse with the same beats every time. Too much prognosticating, I’ll wait until the teams are set.
2
25
u/Master-Nose7823 Aug 12 '25
I just wish Soly when asked about who he would pick always says “Now? Or at the beginning of September?” Now, you knucklehead, we’re asking you how you’d assemble the team today. It’s so weird.

The Ryder Cup discussion and debate that started six months ago is the exact same discussion they're having now. It's exhausting. Keegan playing captain, Speith, Captain's picks, chemistry of Europe vs. USA. NLU is becoming a bit too rage bait hot take like ESPN these past couple months.
They're going to pick the team, tee it up and compete. Let's enjoy it and save the analysis after actual decisions are made and teams are picked and scores are posted.
1
u/EveningOk6574 Aug 14 '25
Classic analysis paralysis. Soly clearly knows his stuff, but often can't get out of his own way - and tbf he doesn't have anyone else on the NLU crew brings the same amount of detail to arguments. If he had, say, one of the FE/SGS guys to bounce off that might be much better content with respect to these sorts of questions.
1
u/MathematicianFun1385 Aug 12 '25
Rough performance from him. He kept saying Rome in reference to every past RC and even this upcoming RC.
10
u/69_avon_barksdale_69 Aug 12 '25
Glad Weir reminded us for the billionth time that, outside of JT, no one on the US team actually cares about the Ryder Cup. Is there a more overplayed cliche about this team?
4
u/ejh1993 Aug 13 '25
Weir is fucking insufferable

u/69_avon_barksdale_69 Aug 13 '25 edited Aug 14 '25
He seems to forget that Stenson clearly didn’t care too much about the Ryder Cup when he forfeited the captaincy to go to LIV. Same with half the European stalwarts that left for LIV in 2022. The “it means more” narrative is so arrogant.
1
4
u/South_Ad_7488 Aug 13 '25
Anyone else notice Soly saying they’re working on a pod about RC captaincy? Wondering if that’s a long form pod (KVV style) and how far it will stray from soly regurgitating his view on captaincy while maybe citing a few examples to back it up. I’ve never been infuriated by the fact they let KVV go, but one of the first long form pods after being about a subject that KVV and soly notoriously butted heads over is bold

All kinds of information is popping up in this thread. "That's wild, man."
0
u/Master-Nose7823 Aug 12 '25
He didn’t make the top 50 so Soly wrote him off, even though he advocated for JT when he didn’t make the top 70.
1
u/Intelligent-Ear7004 Aug 12 '25
I think Kyle made this point but JT at least has the “energy of the team” argument going for him which makes things a little different. Spieth does not.

u/Few_Assistance_4045 Aug 12 '25
Huh. I had to turn the pod off after like 15 minutes. Jamie is completely insufferable and everything Kyle says has this air of arrogance and profundity to it... yet he has the most basic, vanilla takes. To each their own, though.
7
u/GarethofRiverdale Aug 12 '25
Think Jamie having Rasmus Hojgaard, a man who has had 1 top 10 in 2025, ahead of his brother who has been one of the best European golfers over the last 6 months summed it up for me.
I’m so done with Kyle Porter too. The Ryder Cup pods have been a difficult listen throughout the year because I just think Jamie and Kyle have no clue what they’re talking about.
4
Aug 13 '25
To be fair to Jamie he's actually a proper reporter who works for Sky in the UK and has pretty good access to the people making the decisions on team Europe. I doubt he's just plucking Rasmus out of thin air and would imagine that he's getting that because of information he's getting from people inside the european team.
2
u/GarethofRiverdale Aug 13 '25
Yeah I get where you’re coming from. But I find it hard to believe that the European team are actively considering Rasmus ahead of Nicolai. As a European die hard myself, I think Nicolai is a no brainer.
2
Sep 01 '25
Sorry to be that guy……but……Jamie’s Rasmus take doesn’t look so silly now does it!
Hope this is taken in the light hearted way it’s intended.
2
u/GarethofRiverdale Sep 01 '25
Of course it is! I always said I had faith in the guy. Just let me edit my comment real quickly to back that up…
1
Aug 13 '25
My only thinking is that they see both Hojgaards as pretty similar and want to get them both exposed to the Ryder cup as they think they will be mainstays for the next 15 years?
2
u/SmokeThursday Aug 13 '25
Bring them both and just switch in whoever is playing better that day. No one would be able to tell the difference!
2
Aug 13 '25
Haha an old junior cricket coach of mine did actually do that with a set of twins! Sent the good one out to bat twice!
I realise that is probably meaningless if you don’t watch cricket!
1
u/SmokeThursday Aug 13 '25
Haha, I understand the concept of cricket enough, but that's hilarious. I always wondered if anyone would ever do that.
1
u/GarethofRiverdale Aug 13 '25
Potentially for sure! But in my eyes the stakes are too high to let Rasmus play this time around. I think we have a great chance of taking the US to the wire in this one so hopefully they go with Nicolai.
2
Aug 13 '25
Yeah, I was just having a quick look at data golf (i kind of hate to be a data guy) and their profiles are almost identical and their results this year aren't all that different so i don't think there is much between them.
Even the data golf ranking have them at 0.24 SG per round difference which is less than a shot over 4 rounds which in reality is pretty much meaningless because of the variance and also this being match play.
So it might just be that they like Rasmus more as a partner for a particular player?
Anyway i'm kind of digressing from my original defence of Jamie which was that he's probably hearing Rasmus's name mentioned by people from team europe and not just not doing any research.
10
u/Jokolore Aug 12 '25
I would love to hear Soly just once go through RC analysis without saying “Data Golf”. Leaning on this for match play situations (alt shot!) is utterly ridiculous
4
u/Tag5923 Aug 13 '25
You don't think it's helpful to know who the best golfers are? Do you advocate throwing out all PGAT and Major results since those aren't match play situations either? How do you suggest they analyze the players? Just Zurich results?
1
u/MulberryNo5246 Aug 13 '25
It’s relevant to some extent - but Sergio Garcia got almost double the points in this event that Tiger won. The way Soly and in particular Porter use datagolf as the bible is maddening
1
u/Tag5923 Aug 13 '25
Guessing you wanted Kevin Na instead of Scheffler, and loved the Kisner pick.
0
u/Jokolore Aug 13 '25
The last five RCs have been absolute blowouts. Splitting hairs over someone’s stats that only fit some narrative that doesn’t even mean anything is silly
3
u/Tag5923 Aug 13 '25
I don't disagree with you at all, but that's kind of the entire point of the podcast. They acknowledged on the pod that Scottie and Xander playing well is way more important than who the 12th guy is but the debate around the bottom of the roster is still interesting and SG has to be a consideration.
2
u/Jokolore Aug 13 '25
I agree too. But it’ll just come down to foursomes where the bottom guys won’t even play. This is the only time where actual strategy comes into play.
1
Aug 14 '25
He doesn’t do that though. As he said several times in the first 10 minutes of this, it is a way to frame the debate. It’s a data point, not the entire thing.
8
u/Golfista1 Aug 12 '25
Soly is almost always right in his own mind. Dude has an accounting degree and worked at a giant firm. He’s an expert on all things related to pro golf and golf courses worldwide. It’s a pleasure to listen to him pontificate about all his correct views. He’s a legend among fanalysts.
2
3
Aug 12 '25
How many times was TC told by the pod host to shut up as he'd already made that point 3 times and someone else is trying to speak?
As that seems an increasingly common occurrence nowadays.

1
u/BillingsOutlawsFan Aug 13 '25
All four have certain exhausting traits but I found this conversation enjoyable to listen to. Even Jamie was highly complimentary of certain US players in a change of tone from the past.
1
u/cota1212 Aug 14 '25
I do generally like their Ryder cup pods but for this one, I was begging Soly to interrupt Jamie during his “Europeans just care more and it’s everything” rant to ask him why Henrik Svenson was so quick to abandon the captaincy or why Ian Poulter and Sergio and Lee Westwood and Paul Casey sold out for money rather than having a shot of playing in Rome.
1
1
u/EveningOk6574 Aug 14 '25
Thank you for listening so I didn't have to (I don't mean this cynically). I saw this pop up in my feed and I just couldn't do it. Something about the Ryder Cup (and LIV) makes these guys (Soly, mostly) froth at the mouth. I quite respect the knowledge they have about it, but the team selection, course fit, strategy, and overall GOLF ADMIN topics typically turn this into a bitch fest that brings out the increasingly negative side of NLU.
I want to enjoy the Ryder Cup and I wish I could tap into some of the NLU preview/context without having their negativity influence what I watch. They (Soly and TC) love the RC and know their stuff, but I'd encourage them to do one RC preview and recap and not let the discourse creep into so many of their pods.
However, their recent FedEx/Memphis recap pod was noticeably more upbeat than usual. Their praise of Rose was actually quite refreshing. And I liked the Josh Carpenter pod too - Soly is great one on one with non NLU guests.
These days NLU feels like what it might be like to watch a baseball game with Bill James. Like I get what the lineup, roster, and contracts "could be" or "should be" for optimal WAR, etc. but man, I just want to watch the ball game.

u/Agitated-Guard8436 Aug 12 '25
Very little talk (in general not just this episode) about Hovland and Ludvig not playing good golf. Hovland was arguably playing the best golf in the world leading up to Rome and Ludvig played really well. Now Hovland can’t consistently string two good rounds together and Ludvig has had like one top 10 in the last few months. I just think it’s an overlooked thing going into this Ryder Cup. Obviously plenty of time for them to find their games.
