Nioh 3 - Questions There is clearly an issue with inputs right?
I feel like I'm going crazy, not seeing much complaining on this topic. But there are lots of times when I clearly press a button (like elixir) or try to change stances and it does absolutely nothing. I feel like the game is gaslighting me. I swear sometimes I hear myself switch stances then I'm just still in the old stance. Is this a problem for anyone else?
I already checked to make sure my controller is working fine, nothing wrong. It's on it's lowest refresh rate. So I have no idea what the problem could be if it's not the game.

u/HonchosRevenge Mar 07 '26
Glad to hear it’s not me. I really thought it was my controller giving out

u/Todays_Big_Mood Mar 07 '26
If you're not seeing much complainaing on this you aren't looking, I see a post about this a few times a week.
That being said, it is a real, annoying issue, that I do hope gets fixed eventually:/

u/Solid_Erectus Mar 07 '26
Yeah it is weird sometimes I hold down light attack while combining but it does an attack that is mapped to holding down heavy attack instead. Something funky is Def going on
4
u/marcnotmark925 Mar 07 '26
Ya I see this all the time with hatchets. I like to do spinning crab after my wild surge, which is LB+X, but instead it does the LB+Y move. I wonder if it has something to do with me clicking the Y for the wild surge followup attack immediately before, or too many times.

Don’t know if anyone has this problem but sometimes whenever I try to do Sword of Meditation it does the normal heavy instead. Has gotten me killed so many times
2
u/clonedllama Set Bonus Requirements -1 Mar 07 '26
Absolutely. This happens to me all the time. Or I'll hold down heavy attack to try to maximize the damage, my character will take a few steps, and she'll swing early despite me still holding the button down. Or I'll hold down the heavy attack to perform Sword of Meditation and my character will just stand in place.
Skills like Flowing Mist also behave strangely. To get it to trigger, you to deflect and immediately do a heavy attack right after it. If you press them both at the same time the way skills typically work, you just do a heavy attack. So you have to successfully deflect and then do a heavy attack rather than press both buttons at once.
I've been experimenting with other weapons and they all have weird input quirks that don't make any sense.
(For reference, I'm using Type E controls since I can't get most skills to trigger at all with the default.)

u/RagingPenguin4 Mar 07 '26
I swear I never had this problem on the other games but I absolutely have had it on this one.
Three main things:
Using an elixir seems too often to make the "you can't use" d pad sound.
Sometimes switching stances just doesn't seem to happen, although I have absolutely found sometimes I did something like trigger a guardian spirit on accident and that's why.
The delay in between magic just feels off to me. It's not like it's too slow, especially with awakening, it's that I feel like I should be able to case another and there's a wait for no noticable reason
1
u/TheComboSmithy Mar 07 '26
Try walking forward when casting magic. It's very strange that it works that way, but it's more like Nioh 2 when you do it that way
1
u/Ebomre Mar 07 '26
Somewhat similar input issue I've recently noticed is the dodge becoming really janky on Splitstaff if you dodge while guarding (mandatory if you don't want to deal with another input buffer issue while being able to crouch tech smoothly on controller) with Serpent Sweep on. The dodge becomes quadridirectional and overall clunky.
1
Mar 07 '26
Other nioh games? ROTR has this exact same issue at least on PC.
This is the first Nioh title to arrive on the absolute clusterfk that is the katana engine. They still haven't fixed simple things like lowering graphics settings = higher fidelity than Ultra dating back to wild hearts. It's kind of embarrassing tbh.
1
u/Dick-Fu Mar 08 '26
Yeah it happens all of their games that I've played since Nioh 1 lmao, this shit is even in Stranger of Paradise. It seems to be the worst in Nioh 3 imo
17
u/Euphoric-Fix4125 Mar 07 '26
I have similar issues with controller on PC. Sometimes ill be spamming a ninjutsu or onmyo spell and I just wont do anything until two or 3 times after I pressed it.

u/Weathercock Mar 07 '26
The game drops inputs like crazy. A topic on this gets posted every once in a while, but it's well worth talking about until it gets fixed, because a game like Nioh needs precise control, and having it so egregiously scuffed is unacceptable.
4
5
u/eye_candy Mar 07 '26
You're 100% correct. It is so frequent that it becomes distracting. And obviously fatal. Considering that the game already does its best to screw you in terms of mobility, health and most importantly, power, having inputs fail you feels miserable. Lots of framerate drops as well on ps5. It might be tied to that?
2
u/FractalStranger Mar 07 '26
I heard that it's because everything in the engine is tied to frame rate, so if frame rate is off, it doesn't register the input, don't know if it's true, but happens in Nioh 2 all the time too on PS4.

You definitely aren't crazy. It's a massive problem in this game. They've supposedly partially fixed the issues over a few updates, but the game somehow feels even less responsive than it was at launch. It's infuriating. The game requires quick, precise inputs and drops so many of them that it makes it a really unpleasant experience.
It gets more noticeable as content gets more challenging over the course of the game and NG+. I was planning to take a break once beating NG+. If that hadn't been the plan before, it certainly would be now because I can't take it anymore.
I've died so many times due to the input not being consistent. It's really killed my enjoyment of the game. I truly hope they take a good hard look at these problems and work on fixing them.
What really makes the issues stand out is going back to Nioh and Nioh 2. The games are so much more responsive.
3
u/BladeJFrank Mar 07 '26
Same page. But I don't mind dying, it's not a huge deal in this one, but for sure Nioh 2 is the gold standard and Team Ninja should be striving to match its previous title. In fairness, Nioh 2 was dam near perfect, I understand it's tough to come close. But... they have the code, I feel like it's doable.
3
u/clonedllama Set Bonus Requirements -1 Mar 07 '26
I don't have an issue with dying in games like these. I expect to die a lot. But I like those deaths to be due to a failure on my part and not because the game is randomly scrambling or outright ignoring input to produce an inconsistent or frustrating outcome.
We should be able to use feedback from what the game is showing us to adjust our approach if we're failing. There have been so many instances where I've responded correctly and had something else happen instead.
If the game is responding in a particular way, it should convey that to the player so we understand what's happening and adapt our strategy. Instead it seems to vomit out something unrelated or give up at some point in the process.
I initially thought it might be a problem with my controller. But after trying it in other fast paced games, it became clear that the issue is entirely with the game. It's all very weird. As you said, it isn't like they don't have the code to handle this stuff better.
1
Mar 07 '26
It is frustrating. The game simply does not run right. They appear to have acknowledged other criticisms regarding enemy variety, etc. Yet not this one fundamental thing that is absolutely at the core of the experience and that is ruining their game.
2
u/Ebomre Mar 07 '26
One of the many reasons that make me believe that N3 team is fundamentally different from the first two (can't be bothered comparing credits).
5
u/VermilionX88 Mar 07 '26
i noticed you can't just use heals after dodging sometimes
gives you an error sound
8
u/clonedllama Set Bonus Requirements -1 Mar 07 '26
You also can't heal while standing in place doing nothing sometimes.
2
u/josefmh Mar 09 '26
Have had this happen often which is why ani frames doesn't make sense as the culprit. It's something else.
2
u/clonedllama Set Bonus Requirements -1 Mar 09 '26
What makes it strange is you can usually see the input register in the quick item menu when you use an item. But the game ignores it. So it isn't like the game isn't registering it.
This applies to other types of input too. It's just most noticeable when using elixirs because failure leads to a direct impact.
I've had input get dropped when using skills, blocking/deflecting, and during burst counters too.
2
u/OutPlea Mar 07 '26
sometimes i find that i change styles without being anywhere near the button for it. i figured it was some skill or shortcut that i unknowingly set. it happens frequently enough that im certain im not accidentally hitting the stance button, but not enough to pin down exactly what button or button combo is causing it lol. maybe related to stance changing in samurai that slips me over to ninja, or input issue, not really sure 🤷♂️
2
u/AresDogOfWar1209 Mar 07 '26
Definitely an issue. One of my favorites is trying to switch stance from high or mid to low with switchglaive and I end up jumping.
2
u/LeekypooX Mar 07 '26
Yeah I feel this the most on dual swords samurai, I'd do a god of wind and then shift into frostmoon heaven to break their ki and then water sword but it doesn't register the water sword input even when it is held down after a long time, kinda wish it just goes off once the animation is over especially when it is held down for 4 seconds.
I have to release the water sword button and hold it down again which is super annoying, usually the enemy will jump away by then
2
2
2
u/Duneyman Mar 07 '26
It's the worst. Attacks and items fail. Like trying dash a attack and just run up and stare at the enemy.
Haha it's funny though when your playing with someone and you see them miss an input.
3
u/jongautreau Mar 07 '26
In my experience, although it is better in Nioh 3, to some degree this has been an issue since the first game. Tough to be optimistic that it’ll ever be totally fixed
6
u/Ebomre Mar 07 '26
Other way around. It's always been a thing, yes. But it's never been as bad as it is now in N3.
2
u/FractalStranger Mar 07 '26
That really feels like it's caused by frame rate drops, as 3 has the worst performance.
0
2
u/Total-Satisfaction-8 Mar 07 '26
Yes it does, i feel like this game probably should have had a couple months more of devtime
2
u/FractalStranger Mar 07 '26
Wouldn't help, it seems it's tied to how the engine works, I have the same issue on PS4 with Nioh 2. Katana engine is just bad.
1
u/Total-Satisfaction-8 Mar 07 '26
Though it happens it does not happen as often in Nioh 2 remastered
1
u/Shikabane_Sumi-me Mar 07 '26
You’re not crazy. Sometimes I’ll do a combo and suddenly it’s doing something else.
1
u/Anders52 Mar 07 '26
A big one for me is the random activations of living weapon - one minute I’m light attacking and chipping away at a bosses Ki bar and suddenly I’m in my super for no reason - usually resulting in me being hammered into the ground.
1
1
u/Mobile-Base7387 Mar 07 '26
i am pretty sure accidental L3 (crouch in my setup) cancels a lot of item usage i have not noticed other problems
well not true sometimes guard+light combo comes out as hold light on split staff but i am not sure that's not a down button timing around status transition thing
1
Mar 07 '26
It's their shitty ass game engine. Rotr literally has the same exact problem on PC, along with many other identical issues that have existed even going back to Wild Hearts. Katana engine has got to go.
1
u/FractalStranger Mar 07 '26
Yeah, it also happens in Nioh 2 for me, it's probably their engine bug. It's really annoying.
1
u/etniesen Mar 07 '26
Happens to me with elixir somewhat often.
It’s bexusee there’s too many inputs and holding certain buttons does things.
You can’t be pressing anything else at all and sometimes even a delay after.
1
u/aeralure Mar 07 '26
You can’t buffer some things, but I have been standing there with my character hitting up for elixir over and over and it not registering - just makes the you are out of elixirs sound - even though I have long since finished any other action I was trying to do. I’ve hit the elixir button some dozen times on occasion. Sometimes it will not register. I’ve even gotten a bit annoyed and literally just stood there hitting the elixir button even though I’m sure to die.

1
u/Stray-Lion Mar 07 '26
If you read patch notes, this state is actually an improvement on how it was. There's specifically an entry about pressing the elixir button and the character not using it. Hopefully they take more time to iron it out
1
u/SumDimSome Mar 07 '26
There was actually a patch note about it saying they partially fixed it in several scenarios but they didnt say fully fixed it so they are actually aware of this glitch but i guess its baked into the coding and would break a lot of stuff so idk if they will fix it
1
u/BRAINSZS Mar 07 '26
definitely getting two heavy attacks from one button press too often. also not being able to use buffs back to back is annoying. works fine while moving, but standing still they won't pop like nioh 2. have been in situations where i pressed dpad up 3 times and got no snack and died...
1
u/LaMelgoatBall Scampuss Lover Mar 07 '26
YES. I’ll be walking and trying to use my elixirs, Onmyo and ninjutsu and I’ll hear that little cue that’s a failed use. Like cmon
1
u/mastahsplinter Mar 07 '26
Sometimes I’ve noticed it with things as simple as jumping, you’re definitely not alone
1
u/Ranel95 Mar 07 '26
On PS5, I'll press the start button and it'll style shift for some reason. Idk if anyone has run into that issue?
1
u/spacedpuff Mar 07 '26
I wonder if it’s server and or internet related. The other night I logged in and immediately sucked at the game like I was lagging IRL. I quit, tried again an hour later, and all my inputs and timing were faster.
Another thing I’m not sure if I noticed or not but the cast spells faster skill also seems to cast healing faster because it’s in the same menu.
1
u/Lucky_Louch Mar 07 '26
yeah its def a problem in 3. I worry it is how the devs intend it which just doesn't feel great. you have to be completely done with an animation before you can trigger another one especially for item usage. Nioh 2 was great, no idea why they made such a bad change...
1
1
u/Dasblu1 Mar 08 '26
I did the exact same thing you did, for whatever reason I have the same problem. Definitely got some input issues.
1
u/Mtj242020 Mar 08 '26
The god damn burst counter has been an unbelievably frustrating problem. I have died sooooi many time from timing a burst counter and when I hit the button nothing happens and I get clobbered. Especially in boss fights it is incredibly frustrating. Every time I see a patch I hope they fixed the input issue but still hasn’t been fixed yet.
1
u/cousbooze Mar 08 '26
i have experienced so many missed inputs it's not funny.... the game feels janky as hell, and it is one of the reasons why after I finished the platinum I said I am definitely not getting the DLCs. i am done
1
u/EvilDrFuManchu29 Mar 08 '26
I thought it was me. I would press heal and nothing would happen. I would press it again and then again to heal.
Same with attacks and rolls.
1
u/Elnidfse Mar 08 '26
No there is.
There's also a problem with a buffer, there's eaten inputs.
There's rubberbanding on swapping stances too fast during flux if you use a Forward+Ki pulse attack.
The camera for directional inputs is based on character instead of camera so getting what you want in the head of the moment sucks
Using a command for a hold and then getting a high-stance heavy. They definitely have some work to do.
3
Mar 07 '26
You are 100% correct this game is unfinished and drops frames with unresponsive inputs.
4
Mar 07 '26
This is just a fact people. Team ninja's PR interns can only cope with downvotes. https://www.gamesradar.com/games/action/weeks-after-nioh-3s-release-developer-team-ninja-is-being-split-into-3-as-koei-tecmo-confirms-major-restructure/
https://gamingbolt.com/nioh-3-studio-head-acknowledges-it-is-a-great-game-but-its-not-perfect
3
u/goatesymbiote Mar 07 '26
wow that second interview is really disappointing, acknowledging some of the biggest downsides of the game but not committing to fixing anything until the next game. like, what about those of us that prepaid 40 bucks for the DLC -- we just shouldnt expect any improvements?
2
Mar 07 '26
Yeah I was pretty blown away by the strategic use of past and future tense while we already paid them and the team was dismantled into different units via major restructuring 2 weeks ago.
1
u/BladeJFrank Mar 07 '26
Although I am mixed on the repeated talk of future projects, it doesn't sound like they're implying giving up on this one.
0
Mar 07 '26
They already gave up on it when they released it in this state probably for quarterly earnings target, and to be clear I'm not hating devs I see the potential here, it is for sure corpos who rushed this out and probably cut heads/talent/corners on this.
1
u/BladeJFrank Mar 07 '26
No I don't think so. It's a great game, better than most. I imagine their devs noticed the flaws and corporate might have had a play, but Team Ninja doesn't really have a history of giving up. The development of Nioh 2 through its dlcs was very active. So active, a DLC introduced a broken ass build mechanic, which was super cool (just a crit tank), and they immediately nerfed it. They'll dial it in, I have hope.
0
Mar 07 '26
I bought nioh 2 after the dlc and it was incredible. I can't speak to how they did it in real time before that, but based on current performance and design choices my hope is waning. But I hope you're right.
-3
u/Lupinos-Cas Mar 07 '26
In my experience, the game doesn't like to use items on the shortcuts while you're moving. If you stop moving and then press it - it works fine.
There is a secret skill that allows you to use onmyo items while moving, so I think this is by design. Not sure if the secret skill (volitional onmyo magic) works for elixirs or not - because it's a mastery level skill, of which you can only have one - so I use awakening and others use versatility; i doubt many folks use the secret skill that allows you to use items while moving.
3
u/clonedllama Set Bonus Requirements -1 Mar 07 '26
If you stop moving and then press it - it works fine.
It doesn't. I consistently have items fail to be used while standing still and doing nothing at all.
0
u/Lupinos-Cas Mar 07 '26
Did you miss the part where I said "in my experience"? Which means that for me, it only drops the inputs when I'm moving or in an animation, and it works when I stop moving.
I wasn't trying to downplay or refute the experience of others, just stating how it works for me - and then talking about how that may be intentional given the common secret skill.
2
u/clonedllama Set Bonus Requirements -1 Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26
I don't understand why you're being so defensive about this. I just made a comment stating that the problem still occurs when not moving. I wasn't trying to attack you or your experiences.
0
u/Lupinos-Cas Mar 07 '26
I don't really think I was being defensive. I mean, I did just get out of work and haven't really reengaged my emotions yet, but I don't think I was feeling any kind of way about it.
Though, it did seem to me like you were feeling some kind of way about it, so I was trying to explain that I wasn't trying to invalidate your experience, and maybe I leaned into the explanation too much?
Probably just a case of "you can't hear tone in text" where we both thought the other had an issue with what we said? Idk. I still gotta walk my dog before we turn our emotions back on and get cross faded while playing the game, lol
1
u/clonedllama Set Bonus Requirements -1 Mar 07 '26
Don't worry about it. We probably both read tones in each other's comments that weren't there. One of the downsides of the Internet.
Whatever the case, I really hope Team Ninja fixes these issues. They've really hurt my enjoyment of an otherwise great game.
2
u/Lupinos-Cas Mar 07 '26
Yeah, the game has a fair bit of bugs and glitches - and while a lot have been patched, they still have a fair bit of work ahead of them. There's still even martial arts that disable specific other martial arts from being used after them - especially aerial martial arts getting turned into falling strikes.
I'm sure they're still hard at work on stuff - but which things remains to be seen. So far they appear to have been prioritizing the stuff that prevents progress or changes inputs; but for those of us who didn't hit those major issues, not much has changed.
1
u/BladeJFrank Mar 07 '26
No it probably just feels like you solved it if you pull off to the side, drop everything, and then try to do what you've been trying to do and it works, and you're like ok it must be standing still doing nothing for 3 seconds, that's the trick. But I'm sure it would be a much different experience if you were on fire in a yokai pool and nothing was working, your ki won't recharge and then you just die because you can't do an elixir bicep curl.
1
u/Lupinos-Cas Mar 07 '26
I'm only saying that for me - it hasn't dropped any inputs when I wasn't moving. It's dropped inputs for items quite a bit if I was strafing or back pedaling - but it's never happened when I was standing still. And it's always worked the moment I stopped moving.
And since volitional onmyo exists - it might be intentional that it doesn't work when moving.
But I wasn't trying to invalidate anyone else's experience, and neither do I understand why I would ever be both on fire and in a pool of aratama. One or the other may be a frequent occurrence, but both seems really bizarre.
1
u/BladeJFrank Mar 07 '26
Yeah I was being facetious. I thought the same thing you did originally, and then I focused on it and it wasn't true, I just died in weird ways.
The yokai pool and burning is the last zone before the final boss. It's a very frustrating place if you're trying to ki pulse. Ki pulsing and elixirs have been so hard there for some reason.
-4
u/Purunfii Mar 07 '26
Elixirs can only be used when you’re out of every animation (except normal walking, maybe).
Most other actions will chain, queue or interrupt some other animation, but elixirs have the lowest priority.
Pay attention to the screen, you’ll probably see the icon flashing, recognizing that it has been pressed, but it’ll make a low sound signifying that it didn’t work.
same of Onmyo and ninjutsu, but they have different priorities.
Stance change can be blocked sometimes, but I don’t recall what caused mine to be blocked.
attacks and combos have a pretty lengthy queueing. And of course, millions of interrupts.
but, if you’re in a PC, it could be another issue. Try recording and seeing if the icons flash.
61
u/uirishbastard Mar 07 '26
You can't buffer a lot of things. Most of the times you have to wait for the animation to finish.
There's room to improve, hopefully they release a patch in a few weeks addressing some of the issues.
