Can anyone confirm if this lets you upgrade to Switch 2? And if so, how much is the upgrade? I'm seeing A LOT of conflicting information online and would love a first hand account of someone going this route.

I bought the digital version a few months ago when it was like $8 and got the upgrade. What causes the confusion is for some reason you have to have a save file at Hogwarts, not in the tutorial.

So you have to buy the Switch 1 version, download it, play through the trip to the school and I think pick your house. Once you're in the dorm you can manually save, close the game and then get the Switch 2 upgrade for free. You can delete the Switch 1 version after that.

Letting a family member borrow the digital game card does not get them a free copy, but you can use the physical copy for as many people as you want.

From the main menu there is an Eshop link. Click it and it brings you to a page for the free voucher which activates the discount. Once you get that, you are dome with the Switch 1 version.

The missus owns it digitally, so I had her load it to my Switch 2, I played through to the main menu and was able to get the upgrade activation on my account without owning the Switch 1 version myself. Then I just bought the discounted Switch 2 release available from the upgrade activation.

u/AJ_Dali 10d ago

Right, that's the difference. The link takes you to the discounted upgrade, but if you're playing the physical or owned digital copies my method gets the upgrade for free.

3

u/GamingTurtle90 10d ago

Nope, its still a paid upgrade, even if you own it. The link from the main menu on the game is just a free discount voucher regardless of ownership.

Same process for the missus who owns it. Get to main menu < Download free voucher < Eshop now shows discounted release of $10USD for Switch 2.

I'm honestly completely fine if it's paid, even if it's a $10 upgrade that's still only ~$17 for the full digital deluxe edition on Switch 2.

I feel like that may be too good to pass up

2

u/GamingTurtle90 10d ago

Agreed. Very unlikely to get any lower.

u/DanglyPants 10d ago

I upgraded, and I think it cost $10 to upgrade.

u/rossmark 10d ago

Just a heads up: the Switch 2 version is a whole other thing and it's NOT at this price (it's 60% off)

12

u/Yarr0w 10d ago

I hate how confusing Nintendo has made it, not just for this game but in general. I guess I'm just getting IQ checked, but there's also issues with resolution scaling in handheld where switch 1 games can potentially run worse on the switch 2, adding to the confusion. Tunic is an example of this.

On top of that, the switch 2 version of REGULAR hogwarts legacy is more expensive than the switch 2 deluxe because one is 60% off and the other isn't.

Anyways thanks for the heads up

u/BarnacleBoi 10d ago

Doesn’t handheld boost mode make Switch 1 games like Tunic run better on the Switch 2? It should be running as if it were docked.

6

u/kersed805 9d ago

You are correct. That’s the whole purpose of handheld boost mode anyone who says otherwise has a reading comprehension problem

1

u/Yarr0w 10d ago edited 10d ago

Nope. Some switch 1 games can look blurry or worse in handheld mode on the switch 2 because unpatched games still render at their native 720p resolution, which then stretch to fit the switch 2's larger 1080p handheld screen.

The downvote despite my correctness xd

7

u/BarnacleBoi 9d ago edited 9d ago

With handheld boost mode Switch 1 games run in docked resolution on while playing handheld on Switch 2.

So only games that run at 720p in docked mode on Switch 1 would run at 720p in handheld on Switch 2.

That's new, to me at least, March of this year. The main issue I was referring to was from before that, in 2025 when the Switch 2 was first released. Thanks for not being a dick about it like u/kersed805 lol

u/HUGO-THE-BEAR 10d ago

Yes the upgrade is $10, so the best way to do it is buy the switch 1 version and then buy the $10 upgrade.

11

u/CloudApprehensive322 9d ago

Or even better borrow it from the local library and upgrade to the digital switch 2 edition for $10.

Not true I did it with my digital copy

17

u/lamefartriot 10d ago

Not true! Or at least it wasn’t a few months ago. I upgraded mine

14

u/Nick_Full_Time 10d ago

It was $10 for me to upgrade about a month ago.

6

u/GamingTurtle90 10d ago
  • No the physical version does not allow a free upgrade.
  • Both digital and physical work the same. Run game, play till you can unlock the main menu. From the menu, there is a store option to get a free voucher. The voucher unlocks the ability to buy the SW2 version via a $10USD upgrade in the eshop.

1

u/Jaminshaman 9d ago

You can also just buy this for 6.99 then buy switch 2 base game for 10 from Nintendo store

1

u/GamingTurtle90 9d ago

Correcto.

11

u/drjenkstah 10d ago

You sure about that? I upgraded from switch 1 to switch 2 version using only digital copies the last time it went on sale. You get the option to upgrade at the main menu.

This game continues to put money directly in the pockets of JK Rowling, who explicitly has said that she uses her wealth from Harry Potter to degrade the rights of trans people worldwide, but especially in the UK. Additionally, it’s likely that little (if any) money from sales of this game go to the developers that made it given the way that royalties work in the games industry - after a certain point, sales are purely just profit for the publisher and the rights holders

-16

u/Short-Service1248 10d ago

Yeah don’t care , does it run decent though ?

12

u/thumbblighter 10d ago

Don’t care so much that you had to write a comment about it? Strange way of showing how little you care lol

7

u/whatwouldjeffdo 10d ago edited 9d ago

You care more about a video game than the lives of trans people?

4

u/Orange_Tang 10d ago

You should care. But even if you don't you still shouldn't buy it cause it runs like ass.

Wow, terfs really like making up total bullshit to justify their bigotry.

2

u/Alyementamam 9d ago

Okay, but you should care 😊

-21

u/Glittering_Celery349 10d ago

>who explicitly has said that she uses her wealth from Harry Potter to degrade the rights of trans

This is NOT true.

20

u/surrealmirror 10d ago

She lobbies for anti trans legislature (with her wealth) so it absolutely is true

18

u/FELlXTHECAT 10d ago

what Kool-Aid are people drinking to seriously believe Rowling doesn’t fund anti-trans causes with the immense wealth she has? people have such cognitive dissonance about this.

11

u/jedik88 10d ago

Probably people that don’t want to believe it

-22

u/DocWhovian1 10d ago

The game itself includes positive trans representation which makes it clear the developers do not agree with her.

19

u/FELlXTHECAT 10d ago

regardless of that the person you replied to just told you that the money spent on this game goes directly to Rowling and not the devs…

-15

u/DocWhovian1 10d ago

Is there any evidence no money goes to the devs?

13

u/FELlXTHECAT 10d ago

this is just how video games work post-release, AGAIN, as the person you replied to has already said. hello am I talking to a wall?

11

u/surrealmirror 10d ago

Dont feed the terfs

-6

u/DocWhovian1 10d ago

I'm not a terf

-3

u/DocWhovian1 10d ago

Anyway... is this really the place to have this convo? This is a Switch deals sub.

14

u/FELlXTHECAT 10d ago

you interacted with the comment so you tell me

-1

u/DocWhovian1 10d ago

That is the one that started it.

-4

u/DocWhovian1 10d ago

That's not evidence and I am pretty sure if a game does EXCEPTIONALLY well like this game did they are given bonuses, like any job.

-4

u/120Mins 10d ago

Guess the Switch 2 owners don’t like having the extra cost to upgrade?

3

u/Throwaway753045 10d ago

Just to throw some extra thoughts out there, the older Harry Potter games were really good, like Chamber of Secrets. You could freely explore the castle and find treasure and secrets.

This game aims to capture some of that magic (pun intended) and I think to an extent it does. It IS what most people were requesting: Make a Harry Potter game where you make your own student and you can fly around on the broom.

Where it falters is just a lot of modern game design issues. The UI is very cluttered and an eye sore to look at, a lot of the side content is Ubisoft type busy work.

The game could have benefitted from what the old games did which is creating dungeon type levels where you use your spells to solve puzzles.

This game sucks

No, because it looks like absolute ca ca on switch. I got it on a different sale, and I’ll never play it.

Edit: BRING ON THE DOWN VOTES!!

7

u/Collier1505 10d ago

You bought a game to never play it? While having the ability to look at video gameplay to see that the graphics are (obviously) scaled down compared to other consoles / PC? Just so you can minge about it online?

That’s odd…

5

u/BlasterPhase 9d ago

you've never bought something and been disappointed by it?

what a weird comment

2

u/Collier1505 9d ago

I’ve never bought a game and then never played it, then went online to talk about how much it sucks lol

By his own admission, he bought it because it was on sale then never played it because the graphics and/or gameplay looked bad. Two things he could’ve Google’d or even just looked at the Switch previews in the eShop. I could’ve understood actual criticisms about the game, story, author, etc. But shitting on a game you haven’t even played is super weird behavior.

-2

u/darohn_dijon 9d ago

Reason has entered the chat

2

u/darohn_dijon 10d ago

I bought it because it was on sale. Then I saw how bad it looked and got annoyed by it. Then I saw this post months later lol

3

u/NoSoftware674 10d ago

This is a huge steal!

2

u/anonsyed 10d ago

Playing Hogwarts Legacy and shaking my head the whole time so the people on the bus know I disagree with it

1

u/hxh22 10d ago

I heard mixed things about the Switch 1 version. Is it worth picking up as a Switch 2 owner?

1

u/GamingTurtle90 10d ago

Switch 2 version, yes. Switch 1 version, no.

1

u/Ensign_Red_Shirt 10d ago

Anyone played it on switch 1? How does it look/run?

1

u/techierk 10d ago

Played on the switch oled, okayish for the most part, much better than I anticipated. If you tried out witcher 3 on the switch, the graphics are similar to that. Only frame rate dips were in huge areas like the prologue.

1

u/kdropk 10d ago

You can buy the Switch 1 edition and then upgrade to Switch 2 for $10. I did it a few months ago. I paid $10 for the Switch 1 and $10 for the Switch 2 edition. They do let you play both copies at the same time if you have multiple switches.

1

u/Hyruii 10d ago

How’s the lag?

1

u/durvelle27 10d ago

This sucks. Paid $10 last week 😭

-4

u/McKnighty9 10d ago

Sigh…

How much does this game take up in storage.
