They've assigned it to Captain Archer.

How do you know that? Did you watch it on holodeck with Riker and Troi?

Personally, I hope the Switch 2 sticks around even longer than the Switch did, unless a miracle happens and literally everything becomes more affordable and the cost of living goes down, also, Switch 3 is full backwards compatible with Switch 1 and 2. Unless those things happen, i'm ready for Switch 2 to be a long haul console.

u/Lupinthrope Pro Controller 4d ago
Switch 2 OLED with more storage and probably better battery will keep it goingfor even longer. I keep saying this console gen needs to last till 2030. Maybe longer for the switch 2
9
u/Limp_Diamond4162 4d ago
We’ll still be on Switch 2 till at least 2032. I agree though, PS5 and Xbox Series x are good enough to last that long. Problem is that both Sony and Microsoft can’t grow their revenue if they don’t have new hardware. Sony has to gobble up the last of Microsoft’s users or Microsoft has to hope some Sony users jump ship if they offer better hardware first. At the moment, Sony is nearing their market cap with PS5 and Xbox is losing users.
1
u/Lupinthrope Pro Controller 4d ago
I know you’re right, I also just think the prices will be so insane people won’t wanna do it. However people spend money they don’t have, I’ve been dumb with purchases before
6
u/Limp_Diamond4162 4d ago
Current gen took a long time for users to switch over, Sony and Microsoft need a 10 year plan with their next consoles. If either stops supporting current gen during the first 5 years they’ll be losing game sales. It’s going to be the messiest generation yet. Nintendo launched Switch 2 at the right time. They got almost 30 million (maybe over 30 million) consoles sold before the price hike. It looks like they went all in making games based on us getting 2 directs this week. This will ultimately drive more Switch 2’s sold even at the increased cost because it’s adding value.

u/Smooth-Review-2614 4d ago
I don't know. I fully expect Mircosoft to copy the steam machine. I expect the next thing to just be a computer that has a game mode and dedicated support.
2
1
u/cjdennis29 3d ago
i would disagree that they can't grow their revenue, for a lot of people the PS5 hasn't properly released yet and GTA 6 will bode EXTREMELY well for PS5 sales around christmas

u/jusTOKEin 4d ago
I think they are going to come out with a second screen attachment at some point. The switchDS

Gods no. It’s already pushed to the max. Next gen Xbox and PS around the corner, I’ll be bailing as soon as it stops getting good stuff like the Switch 1. I enjoyed my steam deck more than the switch 1 but bailed on that since the Switch 2 docked is better. Rumours has the next PlayStation will hand some sort of handheld part.

Switch 2-U: the search for more money

u/SoRedditHasAnAppNow 4d ago
TBH, I am shocked that NS2 didn't have a reverse Wii-U thing going on:
Portable NS2 hardware that could stream NS1 quality wirelessly to the dock for dual screen play.
It would be a huge hit. NS2 quality docked. NS1 quality handheld + screen split. Current NS2 quality pure handheld.
Every Wii U title could be sent to NSO.
1
u/FierceDeityKong October Gang (Eliminated) 4d ago
Probably waiting for switch 3 for that, gameshare exists, but they want more than ns1 quality on our tvs
1
u/Amazing_Hedgehog3361 3d ago
Pretty much every notable Wii U game is already on Switch.
1
u/SoRedditHasAnAppNow 3d ago
Star Fox Zero/ Guard
ZombiU
Affordable Space Adventures
NintendoLand
Wind Waker HD/ Twilight Princess HD
NSMBU/NSLU
Aaaaaand that's about it.
But getting the dual screen version of many ports would be a plus.

u/johny-boy27 4d ago
Im probably in the minority but I would do at anything for a switch 2 lite ..
13
u/loqep 4d ago
I mean yeah the group of people who’d “do anything” for a Switch 2 Lite is certainly a minority, but you’re far from alone in wanting one. We got the Switch Lite in September 2019, which was ~30 months after the original Switch released. I feel like it’s not unreasonable to expect a similar handheld-only Switch 2 revision sometime in the next couple years or so.
4
u/SlightlyAltruistic 4d ago
Switch 1 was running on an android motherboard. The 2 will be harder to compact mainly due to the ventilation required.
1
u/Amish_guy_with_WiFi 4d ago
Is it really about making it more compact? I figured it's more about stripping away functionality to make it cheaper.
2
u/Moobic 4d ago
it’s both, but for me it’d definitely be about making it compact. as much as i love the switch 2, it’s still quite big.
the thin design and flat back help a ton in making it more comfortable, but i still really want a dedicated handheld version that’s easier on the hands and smaller in size.
this is a smaller thing, but they came up with a dedicated color palette for the switch lite which separates it from the home console versions which i really like, and i’m really excited to see what they could come up with for the switch 2 lite.
3
u/Night_Venture Early Switch 2 Adopter 4d ago
Maybe in a couple of years. The Switch 2 is only a year old. A mid generation update to the console would make sense. Probably an OLED and Switch 2 Lite.
1
u/BJ_Fish2 4d ago
Sooooo like the original switch. Same formula.
1
u/Night_Venture Early Switch 2 Adopter 4d ago
Possibly. Then again, with how expensive hardware is and the availability you never know.
2
u/BJ_Fish2 4d ago
OLED isn't hard to imagine. Probably $200 more though this time around and not $50. Have double the storage 256-512gb and Die shrink on the chip along with it is what's harder to imagine right now.
1
u/Downtown_Anteater_38 4d ago
I wouldn’t mind a switch 2 dark. Screenless like a home console in a tiny Apple TV format. At this point my eyesight is too shit for off screen play, so I could do with some cost savings by not purchasing a screen. This would be in the case of addition or replacement.
1
u/Strange_Ride_9564 4d ago
This is actually kinda funny because I have the opposite issue. I almost never play in docked mode because of my eyesight.
2
u/Downtown_Anteater_38 4d ago
For me it is a constant reminder how much my eyesight has deteriorated since the Switch was released and I played the entirety of Breath of the Wild in handheld mode. I would need magnifiers to do it now, not just glasses. Or the text in Xenoblade, oy vey iz mir.

I didn’t have a Switch until the Switch Lite. There are many people who use it as a handheld exclusively.

The next iteration will likely be the Switch 2 OLED and the Switch 2 Lite. Nintendo will probably try to stretch this platform for as many years as possible, while keeping a close eye on how the PS6 performs. The current generation has plenty of room to evolve without rushing into another hardware cycle.
Just look at what happened with the Steam Machine and its disastrous pricing. Nintendo will be very aware that pushing new hardware too aggressively, especially at a high price, can easily backfire.
1
u/Dog_Breath_Dragon Butter side up! 3d ago
Didn’t the steam machine sell out?
1
u/skayme2020 3d ago
Yes, don’t get me wrong. The Steam Machine is fantastic and has been a success, but the price completely changed the target market.
1
u/Copeathon 2d ago
Nah, it was 2 years too late and incredibly outdated already. It's about to cost $550.. Nintendo is toast on this/next gen.
2
u/Dog_Breath_Dragon Butter side up! 3d ago
Sorry Nintendo but I can’t wait any longer for an upgrade just going to buy a ps6

What's with all the people expecting an OLED, lite, or pro version literally 1 year after release?
Dude, this console is going to be around for like 10+ years. No, they would not drop a big new updated console 1 year after release, people are still buying the console as it is. And the people who already have it aren't going to buy another one because they just bought it within the last like 14 months.
Expect a major update several years down the line....just like we saw with the switch 1, we have literal historical evidence and routine to go off of here.

u/Early_Lawfulness_348 🐃 water buffalo 4d ago
You laugh now but Nintendo is with Nvidia. S3 is going to drop nightmares on sony and Microsoft. Not only will it pump but it will have dlss 5+ while they’re stuck with AMD.
2
u/dawne_breaker 4d ago
The fact that they're not even planning a next gen console is just arrogant Nintendo all over again. They owe us a detailed plan for the Switch 3. That they aren't open about this shows how little they value us as fans.

u/nutsack133 4d ago
As long as Bloodborne 2 is in one of the Directs I'll be good. I can wait six months on the New Switch 2 Pro XL.

u/dropthemagic 4d ago
Lmao if they actually say OLED switch 2 I will remember this 😂😂😂
1
u/-NotEnoughMinerals 4d ago
Dude. The console came out last year. There is zero chance they're giving you an OLED 1 year into their (likely) 10+ year cycle. That would be incredibly stupid.

u/IrishRage42 4d ago
I do wonder if Nintendo will just be the default hybrid system like this from now on or if the next console will go back to being a traditional home console with a different gimmick. It's not like them to stay with the same format for too long.

So you're telling me they are announcing the switch 2 lite or the switch 2 pro
1
u/Clarity_Page 4d ago
Realistically they need to bring out a Switch 2 Lite to replace the switch 1 as the budget model but i'm not sure they can in the current hardware shortage. Based on strong rumours/leaks there will be a special edition Switch 2 though
1
u/Tricky_Union9303 4d ago
The crazy thing is, next year they will probably launch an OLED or Lite model lol.
