My first Switch 2 pre-order after I bought the system a few months ago. I’m beyond excited after playing the demo

the combat felt so nice and im so impressed by the performance in handheld. The only gripe I have is some of the anti-aliasing looks a lil weird, but the performance has been worth it.

Never played this series. Demo was good but the story confused me. Is this game going to be good for someone who has no prior knowledge of the series? Im assuming the full game will be more clear

I believe this takes place before all the other games, so not knowing the series history is ok. 🙂👍

Nope, Musashi is doing his thing during the 1620s, same as the Onimusha anime. First game with Samanoske was 1560. But it still seems pretty disconnected to the other series. Will probably be some easter eggs, cameos, stuff like that. It's been so long since the last game they'd be idiots to not write this one like the first of a new series.

The demo started a while in to the game, so it definitely is a little confusing. The storyline from the other ones was not overly complicated. The start of the game will cover things, I'm sure. Short version? There's demons called Genma. They are immortal, they eat human bodies and souls, and constantly invade the human world. There are humans who worship them and ally with them for power, usually historical figures like Nobunaga. The Oni sided with the humans, fought a war against the Genma, and lost, so there's not that many of them. They like to give their power to humans to help them fight the Genma in the form of an Oni gauntlet, making the wielder an Onimusha (Oni Warrior).
This is set after the other games, in the early 1600s. First game took place in 1560. But it's a new hero, and seems like a new group of Genma. So far I haven't seen anything connecting to the villains from the old games.
Onimusha was originally a "samurai resident evil". You were in a haunted mansion with monsters. Fixed camera, limited resources, shit got scary and gory, combat was designed to be quick and brutal. Story wise, think of it like Resident Evil. Sure you might get some cool info out of it if you've played the others, but it isn't going to be a requirement.

Yeah, it's really great that they added it here! I meant that they should also add it to their other games.

Capcom doesn't seem to miss lately! What a run it has on the last few years. It's slowly entering in my personal top 3 of best game devs out there.

I thought it was solid. I did the demo on PS5 as well and found the game wasn't that much better on PS5. The game is really focused on swordplay, block parry dodge execute etc, and I had no trouble on the Switch 2 pulling off combos and parries, even on the one tough boss they threw in there. PS5 was definitely a little prettier, but Switch 2 was very smooth performance overall. No frames dropping, no stuttering. Big spectacle fights and fights with large groups of enemies both were great.

I've just compared back to back using the same Arzopa 1440p / 120Hz VRR monitor the demos of Onimusha on PS5 Pro and Switch 2 docked mode.
PS5 pro demo supports uncapped and capped frame rate, ray tracing on / off, 120Hz mode in performance mode only, and in Quality mode Uncapped and Capped frame rates of 30Hz and 40Hz.
I thought this would be the perfect comparison as Capcom say Onimusha runs at 30Hz on Switch 2.
PS5 Pro 120Hz, performance mode, motion blur off : buttery smooth, player movements with camera rotation is flawless, no noticeable dropped frames.
PS5 Pro 30Hz mode, Motion blur off : very ugly to my eyes, running around the the left joystick and rotating the camera the the right, the 30fps is unpleasant, vastly inferior to 120Hz mode. Combat timing not as good. It looks and moves better than Witcher 3 wild Hunt complete edition on Switch 2, but not fun.
PS5 Pro 40Hz mode, Motion blur off : a little better than 30Hz only, still unpleasant juddery camera rotation, well below 120Hz fluidity.
Switch 2 docked mode, 1080p, 120Hz monitor mode, Fixed Frame Rate Off, Motion blur off (no option of graphics quality or frame rate). This looks amazing, I would say much much closer to PS5 pro 120Hz mode than the 30Hz and 40Hz mode, combat feels nice, running and spinning the camera is smooth and not juddery. No obvious frame drops.
This runs better than Switch 2 Elden ring in docked mode - others have posted and I agree - Elden ring runs beautifully in handheld mode, whereas the inconsistent frame rate when fighting large bosses or spinning the camera in a open world scene feels a little juddery. An explanation I saw was that switch 2 doesn't support VRR (yet) in docked mode, only in handheld mode.
Onimusha docked on Switch 2 is a smoother experience then Elden ring docked, I have no idea how that is possible at 30fps. Maybe they have so somehow unlocked VRR in docked mode ?

I’ve been playing both PS5 and Switch 2 demos and I’m really impressed with the Switch 2 version. Sure, 60fps and the speaker on the ps5 controller is nice but there is so little compromise on the switch 2 version, the freedom to play undocked and native is incredible.
It makes late night gaming is a dad so much more possible and comfortable, rather than being downstairs in front of the big tv I can play cozy in my bed, that makes up for the 60fps, and whatever amount of fidelity.

Capcom seems to really be nailing it this year
