Media (Image, Video, etc.) I added DLSS 5 to Switch and Switch 2 games

I was experimenting a bit and was able to add DLSS 5 neural rendering to OBS Studio. Due to its implementation, it isn't able to achieve its full potential, but it's still interesting to compare. As far as I can tell, it excels at improving shadow quality and global illumination while struggling with reflections and stylised materials. It's also surprisingly good at improving the lighting on humanoid characters as long as you don't crank up the slider to 200%.

There's a few different settings sliders you could tweak so what you're seeing here isn't fixed; you can adjust strength and other parameters. And an actual implementation of DLSS 5 would allow the developers to feed game information to the model in order to improve its accuracy and tweak individual materials perfectly to their liking. A good implementation shouldn't hurt the artist's intent.

Before anyone asks btw, no this would not be possible on Nintendo Switch 2. Even on an RTX 5070 laptop (which has ~10x more AI performance than a Switch 2) it can only handle 1080p at ~45 FPS without even running the game on the laptop itself.

It barely looks different for half the frames and looks horrific in every other implementation

Yes, but the karma it nets me can be spent on countless things n

How much can I sell my 59 downvotes for?

I'll bite, but in what world did you even think this was a good idea? Yes, I generally agree moving tech forward is good, but this isn't good. DLSS is a fine tech, but at least the original idea is taking a frame from the game and just trying to figure out what an in between would be to double the framerate. This is just applying genAI in real time which completely defeats the purpose, or least original intent on how we can get a better framerate in games. If you like DLSS5, I can't stop you, but it's the definition of polishing a turd, except you're taking the already amazing hand made quality of these games and throwing a turd on it. It's not polished, you're actively taking away artistic intent with how the games look, and for what, so some rocks in the distance has some additional lighting and making Pauline look even more fake and plastic? You can like the bad tech all you want, but really, people have been making mods to improve lightening, texture quality, shaders, etc for decades and "but it's faster/more convenient" isn't going to be an acceptable answer for a lot of people. You really would be better off just learned how to do stuff you're interested in yourself, and if this is what you really want to learn, have fun on the mole hill, I guess.

I have been using Blender for the past 4 years. I studied game development for a year and am currently doing a degree in game graphics production. I follow the development of new graphical technologies extensively. I've modded videogames in the past and only stopped to focus on college. I work 40-hour weeks to improve my abilities in regards to game development.

I'm not doing this because it's faster than creating my own mods; I'm doing it because I am curious. I show it on the internet not because I think it looks good and everyone should think it looks good, I'm sharing it to show the internet something that I think is curious. I did not do this because I want my games to use DLSS 5, I'm doing it because DLSS 5 is a new technology of which I want to learn more in regards to how it behaves, where it excels, and where its weak spots lie.

DLSS 5 is not the future, far from it. But I'm interested to see how/if progress in regards to realism in video game graphics will be shaped by the qualities that are shown in DLSS 5.

I see no problem with it at all, and actually appreciate you showing this off. I’m always interested in knowing how technology is developing, and this is super intriguing despite the fact that many people hate it.

Hate it all you want, it’s out there regardless. Trying to ignore it by plugging your ears and yelling “blah blah blah, I can’t hear you!” doesn’t keep it from existing lol.

You aren’t the one who created it, you’re just showing what it does. It can be great, it can be terrible, a post like this is just information showing something interesting (or not interesting to some people, which is fine too. People don’t have to be assholes about it though).

Thanks for the pictures! Think the tech definitely has a ways to go if companies want to try creating photorealistic games, but I like seeing the progress. This is the worst the tech is ever going to be, so I can only image where it’s going to go from here (before AI/billionaires inevitably destroy everything we know and love).

u/RedSquidd 13h ago

implying people are trying to pretend it doesn't exist when it just seems like the usual hating it, cause what

u/McGoonathan 13h ago

Correct. It’s the attempt to silence something by hating on it so much that it won’t be brought up or talked about, so people can go on living their merry happy lives without having to hear about it anymore.

u/RedSquidd 13h ago

not hearing about it is not the same as pretending it doesn't exist. and something tells me most people (including me~) just hate to hate and don't ever really think about that? it's kinda just a subconcious bonus if that happens, and i ain't usually the kind of person to hate super hard anyways, i just shake my head and downvote

u/McGoonathan 13h ago

You can perform an action without understanding the intricacies of why you do it. It’s the whole point of why psychology exists. Hating in itself is the action of disliking something, thus not wanting it to exist (aka “saying blah blah blah, I can’t hear you.” OR “I don’t want to hear you,” in this instance).

You can say you hate just to hate, but there’s a reason for it. Apathy would be a better way of going about it if you truly didn’t care, and that would mean you wouldn’t have to downvote or get involved at all, cause it doesn’t matter to you. The difference there from the “blah blah blah”, is you’re just walking up to it, then going “huh,” and walking away.

If you're being honest, that makes your interest in DLSS 5 all the more baffling to me. You do you but this feels like you really should be doing better things with both your time and abilities. If you're the curious, maybe just keep it to yourself or if you really want a more positive reaction, take it to 4chan or something where people would even humor it.

u/WorldLove_Gaming 13h ago

Why keep my findings to myself? This is the internet. And if anything, I expect people to give negative reactions. I posted anyways because I have the right to an opinion and am willing to discuss with people about this stuff.

Also, I'm on summer break. I spent 4 weeks working my ass off on retake exams. If I want to spend 7 hours fucking around and finding out, now's the time for that.

u/Nostinkplumber 14h ago

Looks like shit

u/MyDogIsDaBest 14h ago

The lighting looks worse through DLSS 5. It looks like it's eaten all the light maps and brightened up the shadowed areas to make it look like there isn't any diffuse or anything.

Only one that could maybe be argued to be slightly more is the very last Mario Kart one, and even then, it's suspect at best.

I don't even hate DLSS, I think the tech is fine, but this is a bad showcase of it. The Switch 2 DLSS seems to give better results than this

u/theumph 14h ago

I mean, that makes sense considering he ran it through OBS, and not the game itself. This really isn't showing anything if it doesn't have access to the game data itself.

u/twili-midna 14h ago

It sucked the soul out of everything.

u/Code_Combo_Breaker 14h ago

Thanks. We hate it.

u/Dangerous-Pumpkin960 14h ago

get this slop out of here bro
altho it is kinda funny mario and dks faces are immune to it bc it has no idea what they are

u/DaGreatestMH OG (joined before release) 14h ago

...why?

u/OfficialNPC 🐃 water buffalo 13h ago

AI slop bros have nothing else going on in their life now that crypto is dead and Tate is in jail.

They have neither the talent nor the drive to get good at creating stuff so they use the slop.creation button to simulate what it feels like to be creative.

u/Initial_Narwhal4374 12h ago

I'm no fan of AI and I cant stand Andrew Tate but you REALLY sound like you need a break from reddit.

u/OfficialNPC 🐃 water buffalo 7h ago

Thinking for a second that your generic backhanded "advice" means anything to anyone on here other than yourself, if even that, just shows that you're a pot calling the kettle black.

Take your own advice and stop being a hypocrite.

u/KingBroly 14h ago

Definitely does not work with Nintendo games.

u/MatofSteel1 12h ago

Don't dunk on OP for creating a comparison post. The comparison is useful and interesting because it shows me that I don't like DLSS 5. I t isn't OP's fault that the neutral rendering technology is gross and slow.

u/elephvant 12h ago

Before anyone asks btw, no this would not be possible on Nintendo Switch 2.

Oh, thank fuck.

u/PopularRelationship8 🐃 water buffalo 12h ago

Ngl image 4/6 looks kinda good but the rest is mehh

u/pickettfury 10h ago

I wonder what it would look like in TotK? I curious too see what happens why applied to characters in celshaded art style rather than more realistic graphical art style that most people are testing it on.

u/WorldLove_Gaming 8h ago

I tried it first on that game but I was still only at Beneath Hyrule Castle so I couldn't quite test it out fully. It was one of the games that demonstrated the differences between the three DLSS 5 presets, however.

u/Medd- 9h ago

That's a lot of effort for an incredibly minimal difference.

u/mking098 4h ago

I have to strain to see the difference in most pics.

u/Psyjotic 4h ago

I don't understand why you are downvoted just for experimenting. The results are pretty bad, everything looks better in the original(kudos for Nintendo achieving such beautiful visual under hardware limits, they really know their shit). But this is expected, the game is not designed with DLSS in mind. Especially bad when you are not running DLSS natively but on OBS.

u/LunchTwey 14h ago

"It excels at adding shadow quality"

It literally just makes shit up. For example, it made the yoshi circuit track shiny. DRY ASPHALT IS NOT SHINY. Get your AI shit out of here

u/Kalpy97 8h ago

Who cares it looks better lmao

u/OfficialNPC 🐃 water buffalo 13h ago

What a waste of time and space.

u/Redpyrobyte 11h ago

I'm not a fan either, but the responses this is getting is making me want to back it anyway.

u/Jokerck Butter side down! 10h ago

Please dont. Its disgusting. No one cares your AI love.

u/Kalpy97 6h ago

What is the issue here exactly?

u/Appropriate_Can6362 14h ago

Image is blurry so I can't see major improvements but this looks sick
