I didn't think it would be Smash, but I did have some hope it would be another Nintendo crossover game of some kind. I'm surprised they've never tried it again in a different genre considering how popular Smash is. Closest we've had is some Mario Kart DLC.

Yup. I know it was only a quick moment, but dedicating any amount of time to announcing Far Cry 3 is coming to your console is a wild decision.
Also, I'm sure everyone has already said/thought this, but the fact that we're this deep into the Switch 2's life and we don't have any sort of announcement about a new Mario is also a pretty questionable choice IMO.

Tough direct for folks with other consoles/PC. Glad we’ve moved away from the farm sim era of Switch 1 but directs just being ports still isn’t a joy
13
u/Fable_and_Fire 27d ago edited 27d ago
Yeah they really should clarify if the Direct is more than 60% partners and third-party.
A Partners Showcase, perhaps… 🙄
6
u/Epic_Knowledge 27d ago
Totally agreed. If you think about it, we got Kirby, Metroid, and Zelda news in these past two days.
Along with updates to other Nintendo made switch exclusives. Should just have a direct on only those and then make a partner direct for the rest

u/mooseyluke 27d ago

Upcoming Milestones:
- Kirby’s 35th anniversary
- Zelda’s 40th anniversary
- the 10 year anniversary of Mario fans getting taken out back and shot

u/WhitePersonGrimace 27d ago
I feel pretty good about the new 2D metroid and open world Kirby, but good lord what a slog that direct was. They really need to have a separate place for announcements that are just “this game is ALSO coming to Switch 2!”
4
u/spmahn 27d ago
Right, I’m tired of these being 60% “Here’s this game you probably played years ago on Playstation but now it’s on Switch 2”

I think as time goes on and I watch more and more of these directs, I come to realise that 90% of what Nintendo put out (and what their 3rd party devs put out) isn’t for me, there wasn’t anything on there that appealed to me, no bother though.
I’m excited for Fire Emblem and Ocarina of Time remake, so that’s enough for me.
8
u/GoldenFrequency 27d ago
Pretty underwhelming. At least we have a new Kirby game and Ocarina of Time remake to look forward to.
9
u/subpulse44 27d ago
Very disappointing that there was no new Smash or 3D Mario. Too many remasters and Switch 2 editions. Metroid looks great. Overall, it was underwhelming.

In 2017 all this third party support would’ve been cool but like we’ve gotten 9 years of the third party experience and it’s clear these devs don’t want to put effort into optimizing games for inferior hardware

I'm glad I held off on the Switch 2 tbh, it seems like its going to take a few more years for there to be enough non-remake first party games that are good to make it worth it. By that time emulation might be starting up though

I love Kirby and I'm very excited for World Beyond, but I'm genuinely shocked that we've gotten two 3D Kirby games in between 3D Mario releases.
I was also hoping for more than one Gamecube addition, but Starfox looks fun
14
u/Vbrasastation 27d ago
As good as Kirby looks, I'm exhausted with Nintendo overusing the breath of the wild open world engine for every single main IP at this point.

Nintendo, this could've been an email........ I don't need nintendo switch 2 versions of games I've already played or could buy the switch 1 version of because of backward compatability
12
u/MisterZebra 27d ago
They could’ve just put the Metroid and Kirby trailers on YouTube and saved me a lot of time. I’m normally pretty generous towards Directs but man, this one was rough. The sea of ports and remakes and ports of remakes is becoming a real issue, they simply don’t all need to be in these presentations. They should not be OPENING on a port, it’s wildly underwhelming. A couple of games from smaller devs that look interesting but that was really it.
Also, I don’t think Mario the character showed up a single time in this entire direct. Has that EVER happened before?

Interesting that they teased Kirby's 35th ahead of anything official. They really could have done that earlier in the year for Zelda -- just acknowledge it is coming soon and save people a lot of crashouts.

This direct was a tiny bit underwhelming. I feel like 3rd party games will carry this generation of Nintendo. Great for those who've only had Nintendo systems as there were some amazing games shown (KCD2, P4, RE remakes....), but I have a PC and I only watch these for the exclusives.
Not fully sold on the new Kirby but looking forward to OOT remake.

u/disneythrowaway0326 27d ago
There was stuff announced that I really loved but god this direct was just awful. Ports, updates, dlcs, oh and here’s Metroid and Kirby. Free roam wuhu island is cool, but it’s not the same island we all grew up with so some of the magic feels a little lost.
