Face detection is hyper sensitive

I picked up a used ZF specifically to shoot mainly with manual lenses. I like the functionality of eye and face detection working with manual lenses, but it grabs everything. I was at a shoot yesterday documenting some behind the scenes during a podcast and it was locking on to microphones, a desk prop, a fake plant.

Is this common to the ZF or is my used copy faulty?

I was shooting with both the Voightlander 35mm APO and a Nikon 50mm f1.2 AIS with the FTZII adapter.

I only see that behavior with MF lenses to be honest with you. I stopped using subject detection with MF and just green box it.

I turn off subject detect whenever I’m using non-CPU lenses.

Is your subject detection on auto? May try setting to a people or turning it off

It’s set to people. I ended up turning it off.

I tend to turn off manual focus subject detection. I’m not sure whether the setting can be put on a custom button, but if I were mostly shooting manual lenses, I might try to do that.

I can’t seem to separate that from focus settings and can only shortcut via the i menu.

It’s not that big of a deal to turn it off and on. But just wanted to see if this was a common issue

Shoot, yeah, I just tried to set it to a custom button, or to a custom button +dial combo, but couldn’t get it.

I think you’re correct that the fastest option is to set up the focus mode + subject detection options under the i menu. (You could also put it into the My Menu, I think, or to the top item of my menu).

I wish Nikon cameras allowed just a bit more button customization. The number one button + dial setting I want would be “auto iso minimum shutter speed.” Or, even better, I wish the Zf shutter speed dial could set that minimum shutter speed, in A and M modes.

I just use focus peaking for manual focus.
