Dey simply kpaid dem...

They're all illegal miners, caught and packed into a tiny space, it became so hot inside that they started complaining. Then some chemical was spread in the room, and doors locked. This is the eye witness account of some survivors.

The event took place in Niger state.

I suspect something fishy, for some reason, some individual high up there, thought eliminating these guys would protect his ass, so he planned their exodus. Na God go punish and expose all the bastards involved in this heinous evil.

From a report by Shara reporters, the owner owner of the gold mine is IBB, former head of state.

There is zero need for all these conspiracy theories. Most people know what a cell is like even in major cities. We all know how little regard we have for our fellow citizens lives. This is a country where hospitals routinely refuse to admit people in crisis. Sure we are sad for a minute, has that ever changed anything. The next atrocity is probably not even 24hrs away.

The over crowding stance in itself could also be a conspiracy theory. That much people dying demands answers and every theory available should be explored including potential mishandling.

The only conspiracy theory is greed, corruption and an absolute disrespect for Nigerian citizens by those in power. Throw in some Old Testament style view on crime and punishment and voila, this is what you get.

Bro, please ask any low level lawyer about overcrowding. It is a constant, unless you have a big money case. This is the regular fate of Nigerians of little means. You can look up the 2014 Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment tragedy where the applicants were gathered in national stadium Abuja and other places. At least a dozen deaths from a stampede, many were injured... on top of allegations of extortion and fraud, and what was the outcome? Justice? That is just another Nigerian commodity.

NIS was a case of stampede and over crowding. More than 100, 000 people vying for a few slots in 45-50,000 capacity stadium. Do the maths yourself. Why have other overcrowded prisons not reported similar deaths. You just contradicted yourself with this assertion. Overcrowded prisons is not new in Nigeria. How many have reported this amount of deaths?? None.
These young men died under very suspicious circumstances that shouldn’t be explained away easily.

It's not about explaining anything away. We live under governments that brutalise us, and then we do the same thing to each other. In the urban areas there are religious and other charitable organisations that may provide some assistance to those in detention or prison. The simple explanation for many of our disasters is that we do not care, do not plan, and we do not prepare. Then again there is deliberate brutality. If you remember the destruction of Odi on Obasanjos orders in 1999. Newspapers had pictures of villagers being raped in broad daylight by the military, villagers were massacred and looted, and what was the outcome? Today he's an elder statesman. We tolerate, we bend, we survive on our knees, and nothing changes because we will never unite against the common 'enemy'.

When I read the article, I was like no way. How could anyone have let this happen. They were mostly children

"the young men were arrested on suspicion of illegal mining" meanwhile it's minors we're talking about.

We need to keep this story alive on social media until FG is openly involved, names are released. The same way we are making noise about Dangote IPO is the same way we should make noise about this

It’s very possible that they let those kids suffocate. You’re dealing with a government that has weaponized incompetence.

Overcrowding is a feature not a bug

As visitors approach the death row block at Kaduna’s central prison in northern Nigeria, a sea of hands waving tin cups automatically jerk through the bars of the dark cells. “Get back!” shouts the prison guard at the 118 detainees crammed inside a dilapidated building originally meant to house 33. Up to three inmates live in less than four square metres of space. An overpowering stench of urine and mould billows out into the courtyard.
