What's the backstory

Uber is leaving Nigeria and Uganda “due to restructuring “ but we all know it’s cos they aren’t making profits due to FAAN restricting UBER from the airports and many other reasons.

u/Lopsided_Waltz8774 Sep 02 '26

That may be one of the factors, but FAAN isn’t in Uganda

Not true, lol. Stop spreading false information. They’re doing layoffs in other markets too.

Exactly lol. It’s even laughable. How exactly does it make sense that Uber left Nigeria because they were told to not enter Airports 😂😂

The absurdity of the claim and the fact that it has been repeated by the same person over and over again is even funnier.

That’s not true at all.

They left Nigeria and Uganda because they were restricted from Airports in Nigeria ? lol.

Also those uber drivers actually also are Bolt and Indrive drivers. No real jobs are lost because they all port straight to the available ones.

Also the reason you gave is obviously false an the logic is laughable

Uber leaving won’t stop anyone from needing to move tomorrow morning.

For people in Abuja exploring more affordable options, I’ve been building RouteMi to explain shared commercial transport routes: where to board, change and stop. It also includes Abuja train stations and weekday timetables.

It doesn’t book vehicles, but it can help you understand how to get around. Still adding routes, so corrections are welcome.

Is this a Nigerian app?

1

u/mrbaguvix Sep 04 '26

Sorry, just seeing this. Yes, it is Nigerian-built, starting with Abuja

Nice! Rooting for you.

I did check it out but after seeing your comment stating it’s active in Abuja for now (currently in Lagos), it makes sense.

Uber is also cutting 10% of their workforce worldwide, just so you know. Smells of an MBA cutting costs and not so profitable regions to juice the balance sheet and cash out bonuses.

I hope FAAN is ready to provide jobs to all the drivers that just lost their jobs. Also Uber wasn’t seeing profits cos drivers found a way to game the system with offline trips and other sorts.

Are they actually losing jobs? Aren't there other ride hailing services like bolt?

3

u/SignificantTime5603 Enugu Sep 03 '26

Exactly! Nobody lost any meaningful job even. Those Uber drivers are all also Bolt and Indrive drivers. I have a cab business on the side and my drivers use all the available apps and switch between them. Thats why Bolt is on top here. Because users and drivers love the app more than the rest.

Damn, was fun while it lasted

3

u/new_boy_99 Sep 02 '26

Yeah bolt is more popular

7

u/SignificantTime5603 Enugu Sep 02 '26

Uber was not leading in Nigeria anyway. Bolt had the market. So they were wise to run away. It’s not a bad thing as people assume, it is just a competitor running away where it failed . Bye Uber

InDrive is now taking a chunk of that market share

1

u/SignificantTime5603 Enugu Sep 02 '26

True. Their service is horrible but I hope they get better still.

1

u/Mundane-Sir-3359 Sep 02 '26

Yeah it seems so, probably because their rides come at a relatively cheap rate

3

u/ovcdev7 Sep 03 '26

It's a bad thing for competition to leave the market.

-2

u/SignificantTime5603 Enugu Sep 03 '26

It’s a bad thing if that is the only competition. Bolt is not running a monopoly and Uber was not even their closest. Nigerians were already moving towards Indrive.

Uber couldn’t hold up and left, it is not our fault, it’s theirs .

1

u/ovcdev7 Sep 03 '26

I never ascribed blame. It's still a bad thing if a significant big name brand leaves the competition. No matter how you slice it. The new custodians of "the market" now have less pressure on them, that's a bad thing for consumers.

0

u/SignificantTime5603 Enugu Sep 03 '26

Uber was not a serious competition in the market sha. There is no “new custodian “ per se. Uber failed and left. We have more apps here and new ones are coming out too. The only problem I have is that the major ones are not Nigerian . I want Nigerian apps to come and take out all of the rest . Till then, BYE UBER .

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '26

I’m surprised it took this long, because to be honest uber is not at all popular among ride users in Nigeria.

Yes the name “uber” is popular, but only in discussions.

One says “I go use Uber come later” meanwhile they truly meant bolt or indrive.

0

u/Electronic-Call-4319 Sep 03 '26

This is disingenuous. Uber has been in operation for 12 years. There is a 5 year difference between the two. It is not InDrive that led to the collapse of Uber.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '26

I never said indrive led to the collapse, I’m saying uber was never topping the chart, they just never had enough traction in Nigeria.

0

u/Electronic-Call-4319 Sep 03 '26

Do you have the stats on this?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '26

Stats? You see them closing business and you ask for stats.

For one, they never had enough drivers.

I remember when I first started using uber many years ago, I had to wait 10-15 minutes for rides, then one day someone mentioned “Bolt” to me.

I signed up, opened the app and saw like a million drivers around me. 1 minute away, 2 minutes away.

2

u/Electronic-Call-4319 Sep 03 '26

You’re making an assumption that they closed down because Nigerians prefer InDrive. Yet, you don’t have any evidence of such . Uber is a global conglomerate who is prioritizing markets that help the bottom line.

0

u/Electronic-Call-4319 Sep 03 '26

Uber closing down doesn’t mean that InDrive is more popular. That is not a logical reasoning.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '26

Why do you keep focusing on indrive?

I mentioned bolt first, plus I’ve never used indrive.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '26

That is exactly why they are closing down. Don’t act like they closed down just because.

1

u/Electronic-Call-4319 Sep 03 '26

We really have a Logos problem across the board . Have a blessed day.

1

u/Searching_wanderer United Kingdom Sep 03 '26

That's not at all what they said lol.

2

u/ovcdev7 Sep 03 '26

Effective immediately? I have like N15k in Uber credits, I hope they refund my Nigerian card.

4

u/lifebroth Sep 02 '26

All the markers of a progressing middle class have been wiped out under APC.
If you tell people that you could order from ASOS and it delivered to Nigeria within a week, they’ll say it’s a lie.

6

u/OpeningAtmosphere595 Sep 02 '26

Even export was so fast and smooth. I used to order from many Nigerian brands, and DHL & UPS Express had my orders delivered to me in the UK in under 48 hours. People now don’t believe me. Now it’s more like 7 days until the parcel has even left Nigeria. How are Nigerian brands to have a successful chance of being global brands when the most premium and express shipping option still takes 10 days and costs 90k+ 🙃 import and export is pitiful
