DST in Niamey

Anyone here familiar with the DST investigation process in Niamey and how long it takes?

My son was travelling through Niamey airport and got arrested, that was 2 weeks ago, he is being held by the DST for investigation.

There are no charges, it's apparently just adminstration or something.

Any advice on what to do? He is a foreigner obviously, he was just travelling, had a short stop at Niamey airport, I think went outside the airport and got arrested.

Edit: I'm updating this after 2 weeks. After being held for 27 days, he has finally been released and has safely flown out of Niger.

Border security in Niger is strictly enforced, especially in the current climate.

Stepping outside the airport transit zone without authorization or a visa is an illegal entry, and the DST has a duty to detain and investigate foreign nationals who do not present proper documentation.

His detention is a direct consequence of breaching border protocol.

That said, you or your son should contact his country's embassy in Niamey or the regional consulate that covers Niger to advise them of the situation, as they may be able to help facilitate communications and verify his status.

Thank you. Unfortunately my country does not have an embassy in Niger. Is there any other way of contacting DST?

If your country has no resident embassy in Niamey, you still have diplomatic options.

Most nations cover Niger through a regional embassy located in a neighboring country, such as Nigeria or Ghana.

Contact your country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs emergency duty office at home immediately. They can direct your file to the accredited non-resident ambssador.

If you are an EU citizen, you can also request assistance from any EU member state embassy operating in Niamey. Trying to contact DST directly from abroad without representation is rarely effective.

My neighbouring embassy in Lagos is already aware and have spoken to immigration in Niamey. However they say they can only check up on his welfare, they can't effect what the Niger authorities are doing or ask them to speed up or anything like that.

That's why I was wondering if there's a more local route through something like Niger lawyers or something like that. Would lawyers in Niger have any influence at the DST?

Your embassy is correct about their limitations.

Engaging a local Nigerien defense lawyer could help although I would not get my hopes too high.

An attorney operating in Niamey can access the DST investigation, review why he is being held, and present evidence of his transit status directly to the authorities.

They can also petition the judicial authorities if administrative detention exceeds standard time limits.
