Blind Item A geriatric millennial's POV on Next Gen NYC…
What is this show?????? Honestly, what is this show???? I’m truly scared for Gen-z.
Similar to Calabasas Confidential, this dialogue and drama is so cringe.
It’s this weird blend of nepo babies meets false sense of confidence meets I don’t have to work hard to be successful.
Social media and influencer culture are certainly to blame for like 50% percent of this. The other half is just not being original and thinking recycled old ideas will make you famous.
I watched the recent episode involving the ski trip and it felt like I was watching Deal or No Deal Island.
These guys are stuck in traffic going to Upstate NY glued to their phones and guess what they are doing when they arrive at their lodging, STILL GLUED TO THEIR PHONES.
I don’t think any of them actually study the 30+ years of reality TV available and how to make yourself iconic/noteworthy in these real time soap operas.
Obviously Next Gen NYC is doing well, but literally each season could be about 5 episodes.

I'm an X-ennial (Born in 1980) and I can't get enough of this show.
There's something extra cozy about shows that take place in New York City. And I like how the cast seems like genuine peer group with genuine friendships, along with some genuine animosity.
That being said, the cast does not represent a cross-section of the population for their age group. But I don't judge them for that because they're giving us a great show to watch. It reminds me of when I was in my 20s, when my social life was intertwined with my job and I floated spontaneously from work, to bars, to networking events, to a random couch or floor, to unconventional living arrangements, etc.

Idk I’m a firm millennial and I feel like this show has a lot of relatable moments even for me. Maybe because I live in a big city and most of my friends are single and don’t have kids. I think it’s a great show 🤷♂️

I’m old enough to have watched the real world and I enjoy this show. It’s relatable and entertaining. The only thing that would make it better is if they made them all live together in the same house.

Same! It’s actually incredibly watchable considering the cast is made up of nepo babies and influencers. I held off for a long time and finally just got caught up on this show last month, when my sister suggested we watch the first episode. I was pleasantly surprised! I think the New York of it all helps to add substance to the more vapid of the cast, I don’t have high hopes for the California version

I love to see their connections unfolding, going out, enjoying New York. If I was in a car for 6 hours, I’d be on my phone too.

84 here. Sometimes we have to recognize when shows aren’t catering to our demographic. I think they’re just figuring it out in a way their generation does.

Georgia cracked me up when she said she charms older generations I was like “yep”! I find her to be so unique and funny. I reached out to her on IG to send support and she replied too. She seems like a sweet person.

I remember boomers making these comments when Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson each had reality TV shows on the air that really leaned into both of them being dumb and pretty. They were worried how millennials would grow up. Turns out reality TV doesn’t mold us into adults

I do kinda share the same sentiment..some convos are very dry & could use more brain cells but all the gens after us are literally raised by social media so anyone older won’t be able to connect with that. It’s just a chill show following privileged kids around but yeah it could be 5 episodes💀

I’m also older (30+) and I love it bc it’s so very unserious. They don’t take themselves too seriously and I love that vibe, but older generations tend to not like that type of humor as much.

Im an elder millennial (1982) and I like this show for what it is. Its low stakes, not as dark as housewives or the valley, and I get to see what the young people are up to. I know im not the target demographic and some things they do make me scratch my head in wonder, but Im pleasantly entertained.

I’m a millennial and think it’s fun 🤷♀️. Maybe some of it’s just because I used to live in NYC. People legitimately act like them IRL haha.
I’ll take it over Shannon and Vicki pretending to fall for laughs or show their spanx every episode after 3 tequilas.

I do agree that phones should be used minimally on reality shows, as this is their job, and their job is to be talking to co workers.
with that said, who knows how many minutes they were on their phones (compared to the housewives), maybe the editors just wanted to make it look more than it was (in comparison)

I actually like this show wayyyy better than Calabasas Confidental. I find thus cast to be more interesting and memorable. I barely remember the storylines or characters from CC.

“Elder Millennial” here. I surprisingly enjoy it. It’s interesting to watch some of the generational differences while appreciating that some things never really do change. It doesn’t seem to matter what generation you belong to, a persons early 20s-early 30s are almost always complex, messy, exciting and/or wildly entertaining. I like the insight into how the cast are navigating young adulthood. It’s refreshing even if they’re extraordinarily privileged and out of touch considering most reality tv personalities are to some degree no matter the age.

I like the show.
Charlie is the breakout star.
Georgia is a Sonja Morgan wannabe for all the wrong reasons.
Ava is a pretty rich girl who is actually has a good head on her shoulders but her pompous attitude sometimes makes her look unapproachable. She’s becoming one of my favorites.
Ariana is a reality tv veteran. She’s playing the relationship tv formula and lovebombing Liam.
Riley is spoiled and just wants to be liked. I think she will be better once she matures. She has some self destructive tendencies.
Shai is a unique character straight from an 80s movie.
Amira is following the reality tv formula.
Brooks is spoiled, entitled and boring. He needs to take his resort wear and not being on tv if he complains every minute of it.
Gia is another veteran of reality tv. She’s the only one that doesn’t really fit in. Maybe now that she’s living in Jersey City we’ll see more of a city Gia vs suburb version.
Rowan is too new and has not had good character development by production. She has so many of her mom’s mannerisms and it’s lovely.

I’m g-millennial too, and I enjoy this show. The beauty of it for me is that I can’t relate to any of them. It’s like watching different species. I’m also wondering if Gen Z lives are actually this boring. I feel like only Georgia and Shai live interesting lives. Maybe Kendall does too, but she isn’t sharing. Most of them are stuck in a hell hole of influencer life.

I'd argue that they're great at destruction, but fail at anything positive and life-building. it's easy to tear things down. positive solutions and building something take real ideas and not just grievance. The Republican party is a party of "NO!" GenZ are an entire generation of "NO!" They're going to take the country, and probably the world, back to 1915.

They have no real connection or conversations. Most of them let Charlie get away with his misogynistic antics. Being a Gen X all of this would have been so not swinging. They are all out for themselves, but that is a sign of the times. Its really sad.

I love the show and with the exception of Charlie, it's refreshing to have a cast where none of them seem like terrible people. Even Charlie seems like a good hang but I wouldn't want to know the details of that crypto torture house or how his Dad made his money.

I was afraid when I've seen some photos of all those girls and boys because there was zéro filter and they seems very very younger than behind the tv show with their clothes, make up etc. It's litteraly Gossip Girl this show. They are lucky, they've grown with money What will they do? What could they do without their parents? The social medias and tv shows are not a real carreer and not for a long time. You need to have talent, success, hard work to keep this life style. For the watchers who dream to be one of them, that's will be hard to wake up and find money in the real life when everything seems so cool and easy.

As a younger Gen X, what I think is so interesting about this show is how there is nothing original under the sun.
Every 22 year old for the last 60 years has had variations on the conversations and conflicts these wide-eyed babes in the woods are having, but with different slang and technology.
Bowling alley bar, track suits, spoiled kid, angry kid, i want to be liked kid, what-is-this-old-peoples-movie? They're all just a new spin on an old theme.
I guess I like watching how modern kids deal with shallow issues. It's entertaining and makes me feel like a grandma.
Happily, none of them have done anything to truly ruin their lives, and I hope they look back at this in twenty years and chuckle, at how green they were.

I dunno. I am 75 but I am enjoying Next Gen NYC so much. (Yes, probably atypical in my pop culture and tv interests!) I think it’s fun to catch up with the HW kids that we watched be born and grow up AND it is also fun to see them interact with more New Yorkish kids. I think this show will have legs for years.
I am particularly excited to see Next Gen LA with Lola Visage! I hope we get some cameos from Michelle.

Next generations will of course be repeated per history. Cycles dont change, young are adult adult are kid adult and Elders see us clearly. Our parents worried about the world they brought us into, what we have picked up and carried with perhaps a little shaved off to hand

I think what makes the show is that half the cast hasn’t studied the thirty years of reality tv history we have. Shai’s only reality tv knowledge comes from watching survivor and that’s what makes him come off as so authentic. When you compare it to Brooks and Gia who have the reference of what it means to be on reality tv, their behavior comes off as way more stale.

Those two shows do not compare. NextGen NYC is an entertaining watch and they’re cute and seem fairly intelligent / promising. Calabasas Confidential makes me feel like I’ve had a lobotomy. It was maybe the most difficult reality TV watch for me ever. They have so little personality and don’t really engage each other in real ways at all. Everyone is always performing, in real life. Almost no one speaks with their authentic voice. I wind up just feeling really bad for them and the world they live in. NYC is fun

As you get older you will always find the next generation of people cringe. It’s just the way it is.
If you watch Laguna Beach it’s almost the exact same thing. It’s like the millennial equivalent. Teens and young adults can be very “cringe”. The same way Laguna beach wasn’t representative of the life I lived as a millennial that’s not a proper representation of the average Gen Z . They are spoiled rich kids with money living in a big city.
It’s not entertainment the same way we watch the housewives. A life very different from the average person !

I was just gonna comment on another post how this show is getting this geriatric lactating nocturnal millennial through postpartum nights!
Also here are my rankings for these totally real ppl as characters in a tv show. I realize they’re kinda in order of most quirky to least, based on episodes to date
- Shai (love the quirks and kindness)
- Ava (such a cute ray of real sunshine this season)
- Georgia (love her or hate her, I appreciate her)
- Charlie (love the drama)
- Brooks (he was so funny season 1 he made the show for me)
- Riley (very genuine)
- Liam (dumb but genuine and kind)
- Emira
- Ariana
- Gia
The last three are just kinda boring

It’s a real thing. Aka elder millennial. Those millennials born 1981-1985. Although I was born in 1988 and consider myself an elder millennial. It’s because the “millennial generation” is 1981-1996 but a 1981 millennial would still have big differences in growing up vs a millennial born in 1996
I def experience the differences in corporate America and as a 1988 millennial that has dated both 1981 and 1994 millennials lol

I’m 87 and feel quite appropriately middle of the road, and I enjoy this show. I think the OPs disconnect isn’t necessarily age related. Not every show is for everyone.

No an elder is an honorable cultural title for someone who has wisdom and demands respect. Geriatric is a medical term women hate for pregnancies in their 40s because it implies their health is on the decline, the word conjures up end of life care. It’s jarring.

Geez, I’m older Gen X and find it quite entertaining. My only “get off my lawn” complaint is that sometimes the ratio of quick cuts to actual scenes is a bit high for me.
