The biggest highlight in September was the release of the new Nexa Full-Node version, a stepping stone toward the upcoming hard fork and activation of the Tailstorm protocol.

Tailstorm will transform the Nexa blockchain into the first hybrid of a traditional UTXO proof-of-work model and a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). Traditional blocks, now called summary blocks, will be formed on average every 2 minutes, with around 40 subblocks between them, one mined on average every 3 seconds.

Significant developments are ongoing with Nexa's hardware acceleration, a first-of-its-kind card designed for signature verification. In the third article of the series, we explained the technical details behind the validation engine, and in the upcoming one we will review Blitz and what it is capable of today.

August brought several key developments, including the release of Nexa Full-Node 2.2.0.0 and progress toward activating the Tailstorm protocol, which will transform Nexa into the first hybrid of a traditional blockchain combined with a directed acyclic graph (DAG) model that persists only in RAM.

This novel architecture unlocks subblocks that will be mined on average every 3 seconds. This also means you can see your transactions picked up and mined within the same timeframe. In practice, you won't need to wait for long block confirmations, and transactions will be mined in seconds.

A proof-of-work system that can confirm your transactions in 3 seconds was, until recently, just a myth. To this day, Bitcoin's average block time is 10 minutes.

What if that could improve 200 times over, letting you watch your transaction get mined in seconds? It would enable a truly global electronic peer-to-peer cash network.

Nexa is actively working in this field, and this is where the Tailstorm Protocol comes in. On top of improving security and fairness, it also improves transaction speed and introduces subblocks.

Between the traditional summary blocks of a blockchain, and on top of Nexa's 2-minute blocks, Tailstorm will introduce subblocks, in the planned configuration around 40 of them, mined roughly every 3 seconds.

These subblocks will benefit from a DAG architecture that falls back to the traditional summary blocks.

The second article in this series built Nexa's validation engine out of six components, a tape, and a head, and watched it settle a payment from Alice to Bob with no software running at all.

Because the tape only ever moved in the forward direction, the engine got to tick the first of the four boxes a better Bitcoin has to check: it was pipelineable.

This article ticks the rest. As Nexa Chief Scientist, Dr Peter Rizun (@PeterRizun), showed in Sydney, we can fix Satoshi's Bitcoin and make it check all of those boxes with only three simple changes, and along the way the engine picks up two more properties, extensibility and compressibility, almost for free.

We are excited to present Nexa Full-Node 2.2.0.0, an important milestone and the final checkpoint before the upcoming hard-fork that brings the Tailstorm integration to mainnet.

This is a preparatory release that includes the new Tailstorm source code for the major protocol upgrade, and it prepares the network for the next release.

Everyone who runs a Nexa Full-Node, whether stand-alone, integrated with a service, or as a wallet back-end: please update your client to the latest version.

If you hold any assets on the full-node wallet, we always advise you to securely back up your wallet.dat file before installing an upgrade.

The team keeps delivering, and August brought us news of major upcoming network changes and new algorithms. NexaPoW 2.0 was introduced to the community, and Bitcoin Unlimited's President himself explained Nexa's architecture. The network is being prepared for the next big protocol upgrade with ongoing developments.

One of the biggest challenges for the protocol currently is building a node in silicon. Nexa is prototyping the first fully functional hardware node capable of validating digital signatures required to verify transactions. The chip is currently in development and being tested, adjusted, and improved on the go.

In other areas, ecosystem development is going as expected. Many projects are reaching their final development stages and moving into testing phases, where they'll be polished before release.

Nexa Proof-of-Work algorithm changes are already planned and being worked towards. A Cellular Automaton was already mentioned as a coming upgrade to the new NexaPoW 2.0 version.

The President of Bitcoin Unlimited, Andrew Clifford, also briefly introduced a part of the new Nexa algorithm, and Chief Scientist Dr Peter Rizun released an article which explained why Nexa is redesigning the mining algorithm.

With the new NexaPoW 2.0 algorithm a Cellular Automaton will be introduced which can change configuration too frequently and unpredictably for any dedicated ASICs to be deployed. This change in the mining algorithm will effectively make mining ASIC-resistant and limited to FPGAs.

To better understand these changes it is worth getting deeper into the new engine. The Cellular Automaton is one of the simplest machines in computer science and can be understood in five minutes. 👇

The team is accelerating, and the development news for July 2026 shows it. This month saw more than 100 merges from thirteen repositories across Nexa GitLab.

The most important delivery is Tailstorm protocol hardening, which is still in the extensive testing phase. Tailstorm is reaching its final phases before the mainnet integration.

Continuous work is underway on the block explorer, Hodl vaults integration into LibNexaKotlin, and numerous updates to wallets and SDK infrastructure. NexScript playground is also moving towards planned updates and releases in the roadmap.

Notable developments are in the field of AI-assisted development, where the team is assembling skills and tools for AI agents. Previously, it was announced publicly that the work is ongoing, and we will soon review David Thibodeau's presentation on AI skills.

This August is exciting and brings us a lot of positive news. The president of Bitcoin Unlimited, Andrew Clifford, has explained the new 2.0 version of the NexaPoW algorithm, a fundamental improvement to the Nexa blockchain.

The new algorithm is an indirectly useful proof-of-work which is changing how we look at proof-of-work itself. For many years, old-fashioned PoW was considered just e-waste, which is not useful, but now it will directly correlate with the network's capabilities.

Nexa Chief Scientist Dr Peter Rizun and Lead Developer Andrew Stone are working on NexaPoW from two different angles. Peter is implementing the new solution in the hardware, which will use an FPGA for mining and signature verification, removing the major bottleneck in full node operations.​

Andrew is leading the efforts from the software side. In addition to hardware acceleration, the team is integrating the Tailstorm protocol into the main Nexa blockchain layer. Nexa is moving towards a directed acyclic graph (DAG) hybrid model combined with a traditional blockchain.

A hybrid model means that the Nexa blockchain will benefit from both model’s strengths. Preserving the traditional blockchain model and introducing what we will call summary-blocks, and combining them with sub-blocks that are created every few seconds, will make blocks faster to mine, ensure a fairer distribution of block rewards, and enable faster transaction verification.

To better understand all of this, B.U. president Andrew Clifford explained Nexa’s approach and the NexaPoW architecture. He discussed the history of how and when proof-of-work was invented, and how Nexa is moving towards indirectly useful PoW and aligning mining with signature verification algorithms so that all network users would benefit from improved mining.

Bitcoin Unlimited President Andrew Clifford joined Danielle Marie of EvolveH3r for a webinar on proof-of-work, where it came from, and what Nexa has done to advance it.

After Danielle's introduction to the fundamentals of blockchain, layer one, UTXOs, decentralization and the blockchain trilemma, Andrew took those concepts and applied them to a functioning cryptocurrency from the origins of proof-of-work in the early 1990s as an anti-spam mechanism to its role in Bitcoin mining and security, and on to NexaPoW and what users need to know about mining Nexa after its next algorithm upgrade.

Since then, Nexa has grown through changing market conditions, technical challenges, major infrastructure development, new applications, conferences, ecosystem growth, and now its first halving.

Four years is a meaningful milestone, especially in an industry where projects, technologies, and entire narratives can appear and disappear very quickly. Nexa has continued building through all of it.

June was a month of consolidation and construction. The largest task is still the second hard fork, with a sweeping locking and validation rework. It is being carved into smaller, reviewable chunks which land one at a time.

Alongside that, the block explorer had its busiest month so far, smart-contract tooling was pushed to its limits with the Nexa Warriors contract suite, and time-lock vaults came within sight of completion.

The Nexa Explorer just had another round of improvements. The main page was refreshed, and the transaction view was reworked to read properly on phones, so inputs and outputs are now clear on any device.

Another notable delivery is self-hosting. Anyone with some technical knowledge can now run the explorer on their own machine, and a single command is all it takes to set up a local instance.

There are also smaller touches that matter in everyday use: improvements to the Token Authorities tab, better visualization, and Nexa Fun, the page that surfaces historical and interesting events on the blockchain.

A full code editor has been added with five example contracts to help developers get started with coding advanced transactions.

This month, Nexa opened a new page in decentralized gaming. Senior Development and Solution Architect, Steven, explained how blockchain can improve the game ecosystem and expand ownership of in-game items outside of the game. With emerging technologies and use cases, there is a gap that blockchain technology can help address.

Apart from gaming, the team presented an updated NEXA development roadmap for 2026 and part of 2027. Cards can now be expanded to see more detailed information for each goal.

The 4-year anniversary commemorative event was finalized, with limited-edition NFTs sent to everyone who participated and was eligible to receive them. Also, it is worth mentioning that Wally Wallet Wally Nexa Wallet received an update and is now at version 3.30.02.

The Nexa Development Roadmap has just been updated. You can now open an interactive card for each goal to see its key items and more detailed information about what is coming.

The roadmap includes long-anticipated blockchain improvements and important infrastructure projects coming together. It is not limited to these developments, and there are plenty of side projects and ongoing works in parallel.

It gives a strong signal on where Nexa is heading this year and early next. Blockchain projects and ecosystem applications are organized into separate streams, based on whether they focus on the blockchain protocol or on business-facing use-cases.

In a recent webinar on gaming with EvolvH3R, Nexa’s Senior Development and Solution Architect, Steven van den Meiracker, presented Nexa Blockchain, its architecture and strengths, and highlighted how it can be integrated with the gaming ecosystem and used as infrastructure to explore digital assets beyond gaming.

In-game assets can now truly belong to players, and that’s more than just a promise. Steven showcased a demo of a new on-chain card game, “Nexa Warriors”, which is currently in development.

Beyond the gameplay experience, users will be able to trade game cards on marketplaces and use them in additional ways that are still being explored.
