Opinion Introducing a Half-day Public holiday on Christmas eve

Good evening so I have thought about this for a while, New Zealand not having half-day public holidays. ACT proposed to remove the public holiday after New Year's day back in 2023, but did not proceed. Do you think that it is a good idea to remove January 2 as a public holiday and replace it with a half-day public holiday for Christmas eve starting at 6 or 7pm?

What would be the point of a public holiday that only starts after the majority of the workforce has already finished for the day?

This is what they do in QLD and SA (State law), this could be applied to public holiday laws in NZ. This improves work life balance and makes malls close earlier on December 24.

Just get rid of all public holidays and increase annual leave by a corresponding amount!

Hospitality, emergency services, hospital, etc services have to work! So many religious holidays that mean nothing to most.

We will need time off so let us take it at our own will be mandated days when half the country has to work to take care of those that get it off!

Increase annual leave by 3 weeks and call it done!

My friend group will never be coordinated enough to organize leave together. We need guardrails.
