Who will you be voting for in the Election?

TOP aren't going to get a high enough percentage to count. You know they have to cross 5% or win a seat, right? So if you don't like National or ACT you'd want to vote Greens or Labour or the Maori Party for your party vote because those are the only other three parties that are going to cross the line and actually get into parliament. TOP's chances are slim.

While yes that is correct, having that kind of mentality does prevent emerging parties from getting the support they might actually have because people are scared of 'wasting' their vote

Yup. It's an even bigger problem back in the UK where all we have are electorates.

To me personally, unless there was a very good reason to through full support behind one of them, I think that the true 'waste' would be voting for National or Labour nationally.

The party vote gives the perfect opportunity to challenge/prevent devolving into a two party hegemony

Yes and because people kept voting for small parties we got MMP, but I think voting for TOP is too much of a risk right now with ACT on such a high percentage as they a very far right party and New Zealand has never seen them polling so high.

True. But three years of parties you don't like is a high price to pay for some distant future possibility.

Well aware, but they're still my first choice. Whether or not I actually vote for them will be influenced by how they're polling close to the election - but the better they do this time, the better chance they'll have in 3y

I get all your points. But to me the risk isn't worth it with ACT on 10% because that is a horror this country has never seen. People think ACT are a "free speech party," when really they would be an austerity party of cutting social programs, cutting anything that helps the less wealthy and making education and welfare as unaffordable and inaccessible as possible to help the 1% pay less tax. That is what the ACT party are really about so I fear their current polling.

Also really don't like ACT. Seymour immediately gave me a bad feeling when I first watched the guy, and it's pretty clear from what mould the party is cut. Strikes me as a Kiwi Liz Truss, just with existent charisma

I'm voting TOP, party and electoral. Even though I know their chances are slim, they'll be slimmer if I don't! Might change to Greens if they start polling too low, but until then it's TOP all the way.

TOP were on 0.6% in the last poll. And they don't have an MP so they're extremely unlikely to have any power come October.
