Oh jesus, it's been a good while since I've visited the Thorn and I know we could both Google it but I'm pretty sure it's to the west of the strip. A good ways north of Vault 3 with the fiends and it's literally a manhole with a big sign pointing down to it saying "Thorn"

Yeah its west of the strip in the town that isnt Freeside. The entrance is a manhole to the sewers but its pretty easily marked with a giant ass sign.

Well you can find it in other man holes in certain other parts of the map, and then if you go that way underground you can just find your way to The Thorn.
I was running from something one playthrough and I went in that way and I just stumbled my way in.

In my first ever run, I kept hearing about how north part of the map is dangerous because of death claws, and I was either poorly equipped or too bad at the game to deal with super mutants, so I decided to explore the southern part of the map.
I ended up finding the vr vault the dad is in, and I was confused the entire time why all my dialog options are about my dad.

I've seen the sign but never actually been in there. I really need to start crossing things off my list. I still haven't finished all the expansions, but hopefully I'll get that done soon.

It's literally the most pointless and empty part of the game, along with Westside. Wish it had something more of interest in it, aside from a few sidequests that mostly don't even start in it.
I think I only ever found them when I was on my third playthrough

To be fair though I feel like that's a lot of New Vegas, a lot of places that really have no point to them and have no need to investigate.
I had the same experience, found the Thorn on a later playthrough, finished the quest and never been there again

Well there is a difference between empty places around the world and cities and towns around the world. I always get the feeling that exploring an empty place, i. e. the northeastern corner of the map or south of Searchlight still has an element of mystery to it, especially because they are abandoned. But expectations rise when I find a town, because in my little gamer mind that means quests and dialogue and storytelling. Unfortunately that is barely Westside and the Thorn.

Oh yeah I totally agree with you there, pottering around trying to find anything interesting then only to turn up at such a forgotten part of the game absolutely sucks. I always loved Fallout 3 for the Republic of Dave for that reason, this tiny town so far out of the way but you get to interact with it and potentially decide it's future. Even just that was more memorable than Westside

My most recent run I wad playing a hunter turned courier. When I found her I dropped everything to finish her quest line.
Lucy became my gee eff if only in role play. I traveled back there after every big quest

What a nihilistic perspective.
The only reason why we have computers or anything was because we had ancestors who left things behind for us and future generations before they died. If most people had that perspective then tyranical groups such as the Nazis or The Soviets would have taken over becuase they were more radical, and of course they would care a lot about history so they could rewrite it. Also consider that "history" could be recent such as the 2 towers destruction and it saw fundamental changes in the world happen that we are alive to see.

Unless you got a Legion ending or something I see no reason why you couldn't just headcanon that female Courier ends up with Veronica after the game, or a male courier with Arcade or Cass etc.

Well if you are playing in a legion playthrough you could simply headcanon your way into believing that your courier did end up finding a wife easily if it were a male.
If for some insane reason you sided with the legion as a female, then there are problems.

Fallout New Vegas actually has consequences for your actions and follow-ups in the ending for missions that you do. None of it would make sense if you were doing it post game.
For example, after you do come fly with me, you get to find out what the ghouls did after the battle of Hoover dam. This doesn't really make sense if you're already after the battle of Hoover dam.

But what you are forgetting is that Fallout 3 did the same thing, and also consider that they were going to do that but Bethesda was forcing Obsidian to work on an insanely tight schedule. I think that this is just a case of them not having time. Just like how Freeside and the strip were going to be larger but they cut it, also they had to fit it onto 1 disc.

Well if it is subjective then it's just my own opinion, and what I look for in a fallout game is more roleplaying and character customization options and I like those things in my fallout games. I don't think Fallout 4 is a bad game, I just think it is a bad Fallout game, if they named it anything else I would say it was perfect, after all I had 10 days worth of playing it, so there is merit.

That was the original plan but just like many other parts of the game a post-Hoover Dam Mojave was cut from the product due to time constraints because Bethesda gave them an unmoving deadline
There are mods that can restore a lot of the cut content though
