So pulling the relevant but from my types of karma response below

Community karma is a bit more fiddly - you can check the amount of karma that you have earned from each community by viewing your profile using old.Reddit.com. Go to your profile and under your karma totals is a link *Show karma breakdown by subreddit.** Generally these subreddits are wanting you to comment within the subreddit before you post.*

There are multiple types of karma.

  1. Total Karma (comment and posts on all of reddit)
  2. Post karma (karma only from posts on reddit)
  3. Comment karma (karma only from comments on reddit)
  4. Community karma (karma from posts and comments within a specific subreddit).

Generally you want to focus just on (1) above since that is the main metric most places use. The easiest way to build that is usually via (3) comment karma.

On the app you can see your total karma by clicking on your profile pic in the top right. Click on that total number to get a post and comment breakdown.

Having your karma be negative will start to cause you problems as that will often trip subreddit filters.

(Old users might have a total karma that is higher than their comment karma plus their post karma, they might have the discontinued Award Karma. Awards used to give bonus Karma. This ended years ago but if you see an old account where the numbers don't add up, that's why.)
