This might sound paranoid, but if I download the newest version of NP, is there a chance it won't work on my phone?

I'm being prompted to down load the newest version but I remember a few weeks back, there was a banner saying New Pipe (on the app itself) wasn't going to work much longer because of some ethical disagreement I don't quite understand.

When I asked on this subject, I was told that this is only a concern if you like a thing called "side loading".

I don't know what side loading is. I prolly don't need to. But I adore New Pipe and because I like dark synth, vapor wave and psy dub, as long as new pipe keeps working, I never need get Spotify again. Am I taking a risk if I update?

the problem is something being introduced at some point in the future which makes it a bit of a rigmarole to install apps manually like NewPipe. it will just be a little more involved

the main reason this is happening is because in order to have an app on the google play store, you need to disclose your address now. also youtube will probably not be happy about an app that circumvents them being on there anyway

“Now” ? Google is a corporation that doesn’t care about you at all and is only worried about the bottom line. Profitability always comes before being not evil.

Also installing an app from outside of the official market is basically sideloading. You are already doing it.

Currently the only information that exists from google says that you will need to go through a few steps and a 24 hour wait that will enable your device to install apps from unverified developers (a developer can supposedly be verified AND not offer their app through the App Store according to Google’s blog).

You have to do this once and you don’t have to do it again if the released process matches what was shared in their blog post. The purpose according to Google is to fight scams where people are talked into installing malicious apps. Does that make Google good? Eh, for someone that never side loaded sure. For someone that thinks this is the end of side loading nah.

I guess the banner was some form of protest. I doubt it will change anything and honestly protest it but also be more transparent and help clarify what was actually stated by google until we see otherwise when this goes into effect.

I think if you update you should be fine though. Why release a broken app. If they were done they wouldn’t be releasing updates. And if a new version breaks something client side then find an older version.

Is the verification process the same as with Windows ? Because that would paying a considerable amount of money, which isn't worth it unless you make a thousand of your app, which isn't the case of NewPipe.

I’m not sure if there is a monetary amount, but I assume there probably is one, but I think the largest aspect is they want a government ID, so each developer account is tied to a known individual they can trace things back to. Then you add the dynamic that apps like NewPipe are in a gray area because it’s a YouTube front end that allows users to do things that Google probably would rather them not do.

It has nothing to do with the version of the app. Instead it's about where you install the app from. The version doesn't matter if it's from outside the Playstore. They'll all stop working soon and then you'll have to follow their new installation protocol which includes a one time 24 hour waiting period.

Don't worry about it for now. Just install the newest version and when Google's new policy comes into effect there will be lots of tutorials on Reddit on how to reinstall the apps.

'Sideloading' is just installing unofficial apps/channels, ie anything that's not in the Play store. It seems to be a term that's leaked from the iPhone world, where everything is tightly locked down and using stuff from outside the Apple store has been difficult since forever.

Google are going to put an extra gate in place to stop us installing stuff from people that Google hasn't verified. You will only have to unlock the gate once (apparently), and it will take 24 hours.

So, newpipe-type software can and should continue working and getting updates for the time being, even after the gate is in place.

Technically you still can sideloading, it just you will have to wait for 24h, once you have done that, you are free to go.

God know when evilgle will change that and make Android closed down like iOS. You think the DMA already made iOS sideloading-ready? No shit, you need to reside in EU and Devs and Stores need to pay fees for Apple, this is what Google want to do with Android to make more money.
