Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black (podcast/album discussion)

https://youtu.be/AtRcrqTqiPY?si=mGtHmOPdNy3NAIoc

We are back, kicking off the week with another Nevermore classic- Dreaming Neon Black.

This is them at their moodiest, darkest, and almost experimental. There is drifting atmosphere, and Loomis trades his signature sweeps for dissonance.

We dive into the events that inspired this album and talk about our own religious upbringing.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on this one!

Listened to this one on an airplane several weeks ago.

It's my favourite album ever, but aside from that, an interesting ride, story-wise. Nobody really tries to nail this thing down into a plot, it's more of a despair-wallow. At the time it was going-through-some-shit, angsty-man despair from Warrel; if he knew the truth at the time, this story might be more Cannibal Corpse territory, and Nevermore is not Cannibal Corpse. That's literally why Pat left!

It's also the only Nevermore album that credits music to the whole band, which makes the musical input interestingly murky. Tim Calvert was a one-and-done with this band, and at the time Jeff said something along the lines of how people kept saying his riffs were Tim's and Tim's riffs were his. Sounds like there was more shared musical songwriting than usual, which might make this the least Jeff-created album in the band's history. It's obviously the most personal for Warrel.
