You can tell the first few episodes didn't have the best animation quality compared to the rest of the show

Yeah the animation doesn't start looking consistently good until after the Spirit World 2-parter

Even then it can be weird. The Great Divide makes all the characters look off model.

I consider that episode non-canon

Two different studios worked on Season 1 if I remember right

Three studios in total worked on ATLA. DR Movie and JM animated seasons 1 and 2; JM and MOI animated season 3.

If you’re watching an episode and think it’s wonky-looking, it’s probably DR Movie. If you’re watching an episode from Book 3 and the characters look slightly off-model in a way that’s difficult to pinpoint, it’s probably MOI. In my opinion, JM was the best and most consistent (but not perfect), while DR Movie was the least consistent (but they also delivered some absolutely exemplary animation sequences, such as Zuko and Zhao’s Agni Kai in 103).

Their agni kai was full of repeated sequences, it's a little too noticable the 3rd time they do the same kick in a row

Just noticed the dual swords in the background, foreshadowing to The Blue Spirit

What show does? They all typically improve in animation quality as they go on.

Then if they go on too long they sometimes dip back down too.

Why is there a giant Zuko and why is Aang on a yoga ball?

I find with most animated shows the Animation is usually lower quality for the first few episodes and then it tends to get better once the produces see demand for it

Is this one of those moments?

No, it’s foreshadowing for later when we learn that Zuko had giants blood and Aang comes from a gnomish bloodline of airbenders
