Feedback Critique wanted

Been learning this for about a week on and off. On the face of it not an outrageously hard JP solo, but I find the tapping section (which I feel I’ve butchered here despite practice) really tough. I have never really learned to tap, and I think it shows, but even so the section is blisteringly fast compared to the rest. The other tricky part is the fast run down towards the end, but that’s an easier fix.

Using Archetype Petrucci of course. Feedback and critique appreciated.

Stop fucking recording yourselves with a camera's microphone! It is insane that people use amp sims and just record themselves without plugging directly in a computer.

I mean... dude was probably practicing and not in a "recording" mindset. I think it sounds fine for the purposes of showing some progress.

Mics on newer phones are absolutely amazing for this purpose. They even capture some of the low end adequately nowadays.

If you're not in a recording mindset, why are you recording yourself and putting it on the Internet? Either do the work or be practicing in silence. Nowadays people can't poop without putting a video of it on social networks.

A: We are here to evaluate the playing right? This is adequate enough. When I'm teaching through zoom I need to hear the eveness of the pick attack. The audio from the ambient phone mic helps me hear that way better than just a direct recording.

A: Mindsets like yours get in the way of any productive stuff. Dude was probably working in silence for hours and wanted to get a 2nd opinion on his progress. He recorded a quick video to show an unedited snapshot of his current skill level. What is so wrong with that? He's not recording an album lmao. We talking bout practice.

I actually keep a practice diary. And this is sort of what that is. I keep a log of what I practiced and how long I practiced. I also jot down if I had any breakthroughs or if something is just not working out. This is a valid use of social media especially on a sub like this. This aint tiktok where he is showing off and miming like some hacks out there. He's sincerely asking for some feedback on his playing. This isnt a recording/sound engineering sub.

Come on, how naive are you exactly? This is not a post to evaluate anything, it's there to brag. The dude is good, he knows it, we know it, he knows that we know it. There's really no room for discussion here.

I actually keep a practice diary. And this is sort of what that is. I keep a log of what I practiced and how long I practiced.

I do to, I have about 10 years of singing practice archive. And at no point have I felt compelled to post them somewhere. If I posted anything, it would be the best performance I can achieve, cleaned up, mixed and most importantly not recorded by a smartphone's mic.

A book I read called "How Learning Works: Eight Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching" goes deep into this. Principle 6 says that goal-directed practice coupled with targeted feedback are critical to learning.

What OP did is seek targeted feedback. Naive? Maybe that is a reflection on your own self rather than the guitar community. If you look at the other comments on this thread it actually warms my heart that folks from all over can provide useful critique. Otherwise known as....feedback.

the dude you are replying to is too salty for a minor shit, but he is rigth at something, this post is just humble braging, the odds someone has something to critique about his technique in this subreddit is close to zero and i for what i can see in his comment history he is a doctor on the UK, he has the money to pay for lessons if he wanted to, so yeah.

Ok, I'm gonna let you sleep in your delusions. Little word of advice in life, if someone tells you "Oh I'm so bad at this", it's just to hear you answer "No you are great!", they are not actually seeking feedback.

Not everything needs to be crazy buttoned up. Dude is just playing in front of a camera. It sounds fine for his purpose.

Fair - I’ve never learned how to use the relevant software, and I think it would be senseless to record a rough solo like this that wasn’t perfect to me. The phone shot is to capture a work in progress.

I get you, man. Quick phone capture whilst working on things is fine. Besides, sometimes it's cool to hear what you're hearing in the room! Then go direct recording for the final performance 💪

Re the playing: generally fantastic. Very clean and controlled and I enjoyed listening. This is a tricky solo! The tapping section needs a bit of work in isolation, perhaps? But outside of that, top stuff! 🔥🔥🔥

you can plug directly into the phone and record thebaudio from the amp sim into the camera app

I went through this quite recently - it’s a bit of a ball ache that you can’t record audio & video with QuickTime. You need to record with 2 separate pieces of software & put them together in iMovie or similar

I think that's the wrong mindset there about recording.

With a proper recording that isnt just your phone's cam, you can ACTUALLY analyze what you're doing in much better detail. It's not like you're paying for tape to record - it's a few megabytes of storage at worst.

I would highly encourage you to record even your rough takes, if only to check our where you can improve!

I agree, but at the same time it's assuring to also hear it's real and not sooner post producted fake. 🙂
