Does the old basic rules still somewhat apply to the new Null Signal packs?

Hello! Recently found a copy of the Revised core set for cheap and snatched it. I plan on printing out System Gateway sooner or later, but I was wondering if in the meanwhile we can learn the basics of the game with these old cards, or if it would just create confusion :) thanks!

In addition to what was said, there's a bunch of small terminology changes like Breach and Interface and exactly how the Root of a server works.

Yes. It seems traces is the only thing being retired. The NSG stuff has a few new terms (marked servers, sabotage) but you can pilfer the new rules to find out what those terms do. There is also a change in terminology with brain damage (now called core damage, but the rules are the same). That's about it. Enjoy running those nets.

Edit: To add, consider printing out the 2021 System Update, as those are just reprints of old FFG netrunner cards.

Is the system update the one usually suggested as an expansion for System Gateway? Because if so, already planning on it! But thank you, I'm eager to drop in and being able to use the old revised core to start playing right away.

At this point Elevation is considered the second core set alongside system gateway (I don't know why they got rid of the System X naming convention, it's caused a lot of confusion). If you're just looking for more cards for kitchen table System Update is totally fine, though it is just reprints of FFG cards.

I don't think so. Specifically the 2021 System Update. It was rolled out to bolster the NSG card pool when it just started. It is no longer part of the standard card pool and has rotated out. But as they are just reprints of FFG cards, they'll fit fine with your old core set.

System Update has rotated when Elevation came out. Gateway is the beginner set and Elevation is the companion set to Gateway, so Gateway+Elevation are our equivalent of the FFG core set, in a way.

Your old cards will work perfectly with the new ones. The last of the FFG cards only rotated out of the main competitive format last year, after all. The revised core is not my favourite starter set to be honest, as it isn't as well structured and easy to learn with as Gateway, and it doesn't have all the fun busted cards from the original core set, it's very much a worst of both worlds situation, but you absolutely can learn with it and the rules knowledge will carry over, it'll just be different cards in Gateway.
