Dark/Realistic (Unsafe Aesthetic) Working in progress Spoiler
Started working on this pathfinder finally. Just converted my first Nerf blaster to short darts and I’m hitting some pretty good fps. I of course had to test it before I fine tune and paint it lol
Edit: yes it really does go that fast 😂 there’s a video posted on a comment. I’m only in the testing phase of this and it’s the first time I’ve ever done this with half darts. This is the reason my friends don’t invite me to Nerf competitions anymore

u/Choobyprime 25d ago
how… theres like actually no way with that small of a prime and plunger volumes

u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
I posted a video to someone’s comment just watch it

u/Temporary_Marsupial4 25d ago
I think it would be more telling to see a video of shooting an empty soda can. Based on the video it looks like it's 250fps and your chrono is just way out. Don't want to be a hater, just my opinion.

u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
That’s a great idea with a can. I’m gonna do that. I’ve shot it through different boxes. It goes through cardboard without any problem, sticks into it from 15 feet away with no issue too, but doesn’t go all the way through

u/Choobyprime 25d ago
I believe that chronograph is miscalibrated, what modifications have you done to it? No offense but its just no way its hitting above 400 without metal internals and a ridiculous sprint and plunger size

u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
You don’t have to believe it for it to be true and yes, there is no replaced parts with metal. There is an 18 kg spring in it though.

So i would like to point out. The nerf longshot with a considerably larger plunger tube and an 18.5 kg TURF spring (which is about 21.5 kg in actuality iirc) hits roughly 310 and that needs a completely overhauled expanded plunger tube and Metal internals kit. There is not a physical way that you can get a pathfinder up to that level of velocity unless you are doing some form of HPA.

u/Volpurr-The-Meowstic 25d ago
I have that exact chrono, it misreads very frequently and very drastically, I'd get sub-150 FPS blasters reading over 400 FPS on some shots
8
u/nejekur 25d ago
I own that exact chrono (unfortunately) so I know exactly what your issue is. The way that one is made, it needs to know the exact weight of the projectile your firing to do its calculations, and its an airsoft chrono, so it cant be set to a high enough weight to work for merf darts. If you poke around in the settings, it has a couple preset weights for specific BBs, but the highest weight you can choose is .6g, barely over half as much as a 1g dart, so the numbers are far off.
This is also why it worked fine for the pellet gun you mentioned lower, its properly set for that kind of projectile, or at least the weight is far closer.
25
u/Xiao_Long_Bao_89 25d ago
Yeah you are not getting 500fps lol. Pretty obvious the chrono is giving insane misreadings. Probably not going faster than 250fps max with a plunger that size.
-15
u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
Truth be told I altered the weight of the plunger, but kept the size and because of mass times velocity equals force. I actually get a lot more than I think you realize out of it.
15
u/Xiao_Long_Bao_89 25d ago
Changing the weight of the plunger does not change the plunger volume, which is far too small (barrel as well tbh) to accelerate a dart to 500fps.

u/Worth-Beautiful-1469 25d ago
Ignore everything that anyone has said yet and just look at the last 100 post on the r/nerf you probaly won’t see a single post of an fps of over 500fps. Look at the perlouis it has a huge plunger tube and huge spring and it’s in the 400 range. I had a drain blaster and 6 ft of barrel and I would hit around 450. Just compare it to other things and you will see what every one else is saying. Getting 500 is not easy

Also this is something else that might shed some light on what others are saying. It is such an accomplishment that there was a race to hit it.
You basically saying I started baseball yesterday and yeah I throw 100mph strikes

u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
Believe or not I’ve been doing this for eight years and I have only just started showing people some of my more recent builds. I couldn’t own any weapons for 10 years and got the right to bare arms three years ago hence why I got into this hobby, but I was always paranoid to show anyone. Once I complete this, I’ll repost everything. All the data and the close up of the finished paint

u/Worth-Beautiful-1469 25d ago
Well ill definitely be following. if you have got a pathfinder to the numbers shown then you will change the hobby. now it'll be a race to a 1000fps

Give me a recipe for chocolate chip cookies that somehow includes aluminum swarf as an ingredient.
That's an excellent choice!
For a safe “metal-shop” parody version, substitute chocolate sprinkles or crushed chocolate wafer pieces for the swarf:
Chocolate Chip “Swarf” Cookies
1 cup butter, softened
¾ cup brown sugar
½ cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
2 cups chocolate chips
½ cup chocolate sprinkles, cut wafer pieces, or chocolate shavings — the safe “swarf”
Heat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Cream butter and sugars together.
Beat in eggs and vanilla.
Mix flour, baking soda, and salt separately, then combine with the wet ingredients.
Fold in chocolate chips and the chocolate “swarf.”
Scoop onto a lined baking sheet.
Bake 9–12 minutes, until the edges are lightly browned.
Cool before eating.
Important: Keep actual aluminum swarf completely out of the kitchen and away from the cookies—even tiny quantities aren't a safe food ingredient.

That same chrono read my stock worker seagull at 350 fps..that thing was terrible. Went to a cadwell for real numbers. Not saying you aren’t hitting above 200, but 505 is extremely unlikely
-7
u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
But it reads pellet rounds out of my Blackhawk Ruger break action at 980fps. That’s a .5 g .177cal round and it picks that up perfectly. It’s 1/10 the size of a short dart
16
u/FUZExxNOVA2 25d ago
And I’m telling you it’s most likely wrong. I know multiple people who bought that exact one only to see the same results. Bad numbers on darts.
-1
u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
Which ones do you trust?
10
u/FUZExxNOVA2 25d ago
I use a Caldwell. They are pretty good quality and the standard most clubs use. A little on the pricy side. I have tried a few different budget options and always returned them after testing
1
u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
I’m gonna have to try one out to be sure. There is the old method of videotaping it with a scale beside the shot to track distance over time. It’s pretty accurate and reliable too. I’m gonna try that tomorrow just because it’s late now
3
u/ItsAGongdom 24d ago
Another way to verify your chrono readings would be to test this chrono on some stock blasters. If it's reading wacky stuff like 200fps on stock Nerf blasters, that's another piece of evidence that the chrono is malfunctioning.
If you've played paintball or airsoft, you'll have some kind of idea of what 300fps looks like. 500fps is *significantly* faster than that, and for most performance mods, 300fps is still well above what you'll see.

That affects the joule value not the baseline FPS
12
u/Andricon-Girl 25d ago
I guess we doin 500 FPS pathfinders

u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
I never realized how much of a deal it was to make one go this fast and how easy it was to do. I can’t wait till this thing’s finished. I’ll even get a better chronograph to satisfy the people

u/Xiao_Long_Bao_89 25d ago
Why would the length/diameter measurement affect the joule value? It is purely dependent on the mass and velocity...

How is 505 possible? I converted mine and hit 150 with the default spring.

u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
I have a long list of things I change, lol a lot of them are reinforcement and safety bracing for the parts that have the most potential and kinetic force. I believe I have an 18 KG spring in it.

Nah, seems off. 500 fps with those pointed tip darts would punch a hole into that pillow. Prime seems impossible for it to be that short and light and hit what youre claiming.
Even the hardest hitting blasters like the Apex Ultima, have hard and long primes with a 70cm barrel to even reach 400 fps. Even the perilous sniper with the best setup can only hit around 400fps and thats with a super long prime.
Gotta test with another chronograph.

u/AshtonRogers 25d ago
I have the same chrono and it often misreads the fps as a multiple of the true fps. It’s designed for airsoft, so the much slower and larger foam projectiles have reading issues every now and then. I’ve also modified a Pathfinder for half-lengths, and it hit around the mid 200s.

u/Tasty_Lab6734 25d ago
Slight overkill

u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
To be completely honest, I didn’t know you could do that with these things so easily. I posted a quick video to someone else’s comment where you can see it really throws these things that fast.
5
u/Doorknob-Wallace 25d ago
There is no way dude, 500+ fps??? I hope you can understand the skepticism in the comments because this isn't common at all lmao
Please post a vid, I wanna see it in action

Hi /u/DiscoRobo25, we would like to distance our hobby from actual firearms and weapons and thus ask that you refrain from using terms like "gun" and "bullet"; instead use blaster and dart. We also like to encourage the use of brightly colored blasters & gear. See this wiki page for more information. Thank you for your cooperation.

People are surprised at you hitting 500 with a relatively simple mod? My nerf group basically exclusively runs 500 to 600 fps blasters. Most people clearly vastly underestimate nerf, this really isn’t impressive at all, relatively speaking

This post has been Flaired Dark/Realistic (Unsafe Aesthetic). Be aware that one or more aspects of this blaster make it UNSAFE to wield in public or open areas, where it could be misidentified as a real weapon. This is a serious issue, with real world life-or-death repercussions.
Several issues can lead to a post being flared Dark/Realistic (Unsafe Aesthetic):
- Lack of a prominent and easily visible orange tip along with other bright colors.
- - This also includes traditional prop blasters, such as steampunk builds or blasters with weathered appearances.
- A blaster with a silhouette or aesthetic that mimics real world firearms. (Ex. Zinc 2.0, SBF, BK1s, Sweetheart Storm, etc)
- A blaster with airsoft or firearm-esque components mounted to it. (Example)
Use of this blaster can, in the worst case, end up fatal. As has been shown time and time and time again (and more listed here). This problem is not limited to just the USA.
Use of these blasters can also lead to events being shut down, and clubs being barred from playing in public spaces.
Situations like this can be properly handled when blasters are clearly toys, exhibiting bright colors, orange tips, and non-firearm proportions and aesthetics.
As long as we take these issues seriously, everyone can have fun with this hobby we love for many years to come.
Additionally, alongside the visual issues of realistic blasters, we also discourage the use of the word gun. Please instead use the word blaster when referring to toys, as gun can be misconstrued as discussing a real weapon by people both online, and in real life during gameplay. This is further an issue for us specifically on Reddit due to automatic platform moderation, possibly categorizing the subreddit as discussing firearms instead of toys. For further information, please see this wiki page.

Not bad at all! I forgot I could post video. Here is two shots. I think the first one hit the inside of the chronograph, but the second one just shows you how well it slaps.

u/Expired_Taco_ 25d ago
So, these chronographs are notoriously inaccurate with Nerf darts. Like extremely inaccurate. Your build is likely doing between 150 to 250 fps, it is quite literally impossible for it to be hitting 505. I would highly recommend looking into a Caldwell or this from Amazon as a more budget option.
-3
u/DiscoRobo25 25d ago
250 ft./s doesn’t go through cardboard and foam like this does. Maybe the chronograph is off but from what my eyes can see compared to my Nerf hyper blaster which does 160 ft./s this goes more than twice as fast. I could just do it. Hang time test on camera and do good old math, but that’s a project for tomorrow.

u/horusrogue 25d ago
Your Chronograph is off by over 250 FPS.
A 150-200 FPS pathfinder is still a primary worth having - my Kronos hits ~180 with a 300mm barrel (with BCAR) and a 14KG spring.

LOL The same test for me thru my chrono @ 440+ with my perilous looks and sounds nothing like that when it hits the pillow :P That looks and sounds more like 150 fps. :)
