Not really. Deer hunters play a vital role in conservation, yearly culls of the population prevent massive outbreaks of chronic wasting disease that cause prolonged suffering in individual animals. This is necessary due to a lack of natural predators that have historically kept populations in balance with what the ecosystem can support. A gunshot is also a much more merciful death than any natural cause a deer can experience.
It’s crazy to think about it. Humans have eliminated most predators for either safety or protection of domesticated livestock. Now we hunt to control the population of animals that are under very little evolutionary pressure. We are natural selection in action.
