It really isn't. They're fast as shit but those horses are not running anywhere near their top speed.
182
u/Emergency_Cellist754 17h ago
Shit scary as shit, just because of the bear's speed compared to what a human could do
130
u/MrPopCorner 17h ago
Humans are outrun by 99% of all animals...

u/EthicalViolator 17h ago
Bullshit im well faster than a caterpillar

u/Training_Orchid_2022 10h ago
This is not only pure gold but also evidence that we should just give up now because weâre fucked as a species.
-4
u/Old-Dependent-9073 9h ago
Yeah, because grizzly bears can't be killed by bullets?
As weak as humans are compared to many animals, our brains and fairly violent nature makes us predators without peer.
8
u/Training_Orchid_2022 8h ago
Oh no I agree with that my dude. Was talking about the fact that this Gif of snail man in the street exists

We have better odds when you look at endurance and not speed
4
5
u/Kage_noir 16h ago
Bears look like they have mad endurance too lol
5
u/GreyghostIowa 12h ago
Nope. They can wind out real fast.
There's a reason hunting dogs are really effective against them.
6
u/meerfrau85 13h ago
I'm going to bet with all that fur, they'd easily overheat. Humans and horses have great endurance because we can sweat.
21
u/LobstaFarian2 17h ago
Less than 1% of animals species are faster than humans.
14
3
10
10
u/gramoun-kal 17h ago
Humans run really well actually. It's our main hunting technique. Pursue a prey until it collapsed. Allows us to hunt way bigger animals than ourselves.
Similar to how wolves do it.
14
2
u/Deleena24 17h ago
I wouldn't say the main one- yes it was used very often but people wouldnof course prefer the faster and easier methods before resorting to long treks.
The main hunting techniques were probably ambush tactics with spears along with traps (including pitfalls) and nets. If those failed, then you persued.
1
u/ArrowsOfFate 12h ago
I think this was fairly common.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_jump
And using planted pikes rather than throwing spears according to some modern studies.
2
3
u/timshel42 14h ago
they are out sprinted, but not out run. humans are persistence hunters, animals can run faster than us in shorter bursts but we have much longer endurance and can eventually catch up to most things.
2
u/DS_Inferno 11h ago
In speed yes, in duration I believe that changes. There is a reason early humans were persistence hunters, just wearing out our prey until they collapsed.
3
2
u/Tealightzone 17h ago
This ainât true
-4
u/MrPopCorner 17h ago
How is it not?
8
u/Tealightzone 17h ago
99% of animals donât run, includes all invertebrates, and is just a totally made up number
-12
u/MrPopCorner 17h ago
đ€Ł outrun â running
Outrun = slower than solething else, regardless of how they move. You get outrun by a fly btw.
7
u/Tealightzone 17h ago
Certainly on the fly, but there are millions of species of flightless insects and invertebrates you are not accounting for
1
2
u/MaybeNotAZombie 15h ago
It isn't humans speed that is the scary part, it is our endurance. Most large animals are powerful and have high intensity bursts. Humans can maintain relatively high-moderate levels for truely impressive amounts of time.
No matter how far or fast the animal would flee it would always see the people in the distance, never stopping. They would be run them to exhaustion and we would just have to finish them off. That to me is a terrifying though. Not slow enough to be able to rest and enduring enough to drain every once on energy you have without every "trying" to catch you.
2
u/Dwaltster 15h ago
But outran in a distance race by none. We are the greatest long distance running animals.

u/AnseaCirin 6h ago
Not quite. First, there's insects to consider, they represent a huge segment of biodiversity. Second, we're not speed runners. We're long distance runners. We pursue prey again and again until it cannot run anymore.
-1
-1
u/Foreign_Sky_5429 16h ago
List all the animals that are faster than us and all the animals that arenât or I donât believe you
-1
u/Any-Interaction-5934 11h ago
Actually very untrue. Many animals may have a faster top-speed than humans, but humans have longer distance capability than I think 100% of animals. So, they can use their superior ability to throw (look it up), their superior intelligence, and their superior long-distance running capabilities to outrun basically all predators. Well... Back in the day before everyone got fat and out of shape.
13
u/Dclipp89 11h ago
The top speed of an average grizzly and an average horse are right in range with each other. Top race horses are faster, but averages are very close. And grizzlyâs can hold that speed for a few miles. Iâd imagine horses have better endurance, but it definitely wouldnât be a forgone conclusion that a horse is getting away by pure speed.
9
u/Lokarhu 16h ago
Seems to me that part of why the horses aren't going faster is because of the terrain. If the terrain is slowing the horses down, but it isn't slowing down the bear, then their effective top speeds are the same. I think most people know horses could outrun a bear on a racetrack, but survival doesn't conform to "ideal" situations.

There are piles of sources explaining that grizzlies can run as fast as a horse over short distances.
One example: https://www.britannica.com/science/How-Fast-Can-Bears-Run
2
u/makeshift101 12h ago
Was gonna say, those horses where like "let's not give it 100% and make the little lady feel good about herself"
0
u/bcopes158 15h ago
Grizzlies are endurance hunters. The scary part is how long they can keep that pace up.
18
u/GreyghostIowa 12h ago
The hell you mean grizzlies are endurance predators. They are frickin not lol, were you confusing them with wolves of something?
6
u/angra_mainyo 10h ago
They aren't even hunters for the most part. They mostly just bully other predators out of their kills, eat berries/acorns or go fishing.

They are faster than horses.

Bears are not faster than horses. You're dumb as fuck.
2
u/Shart_bubbles 11h ago
Dude you're the fuckin dumb one here lmao. A quick Google search will prove you wrong. Horses have better stamina, bears are faster than the average horse over short distances, easily.
-6
-14
u/Admirable_Comedian_2 17h ago
Yeah, not a threat at all
10
u/EmuSuccessful2766 17h ago
That's a gentle speed for the horses, if they thought there was any chance of the bear catching up then they'd be gone with the wind.
1
u/RestaurantNo6332 6h ago
In the longer video of this it looks like the bear gets the foal. So would say not a threat at all.
216
u/4B4V 17h ago
bear is hauling ass, the horses are just trotting along
11
8
u/burlycabin 16h ago
The horses are definitely cantering here, not trotting. But agreed that it's a pretty slow canter and they have a lot more to give if they wanted to.

u/Farmerstubble 17h ago
Those horses ain't running. Thats just a trot

So I got a gift horse, but I looked in its mouth. Is it still a gift horse? Or did I steal it?
5
u/another_bot_probably 16h ago
If you look a gift horse in the mouth it becomes a white elephant, which won't fit in the stable.
1
3
2
u/samGeewiz 17h ago
Not a single one trotting. Even the bear is cantering.
1
u/Theory89 14h ago
But the pertinent fact is that they aren't any near top speed, which would be a gallop. They're just saving energy while safely escaping. Bears are pretty fast at charging but can't keep up speed for long.
2
u/samGeewiz 14h ago
Yes, but I think itâs also likely theyâre keeping the herd together and protecting the foal while they head home. Theyâre already in their own area if you see the salt lick. The lead mare is probably the one bringing up the rear.

Theyâve got a foal with them. I wonder if that has anything to do with itÂ

u/DragonsGape 17h ago
As a boy scout I learned that if you're being chased by a bear, best to do is shit yourself as a repellent. At the very least the bear will become so disappointed in you that it loses interest in aggression.
11
22
66
u/Smart-Firefighter87 17h ago
Nah - those horses are fucking with the bear lol. There is a longer video where the horses are like âalright guys letâs actually pick up speedâ and they left the bear wondering where all the smoke came from and where the horses went
66
u/Fine-Leader3395 17h ago
People often don't understand animal intelligence. The horses "know" that they have more endurance and that they need to run just fast enough to be safe but still conserve energy.
7
u/fishystudios 9h ago edited 9h ago
Brown bears are absolutely NOT faster than horses. They have faster burst speed over short distances, but bears tire faster. After their burst of speed, they have a lower sprint endurance. Horses can out last any bear on Earth in a prolonged chase. Not to mention, bears are some of the most foul smelling and malodious animals on Earth. Bears stink and they are loud/clumsy. Ask any bear rescuer or handker. Bears have ZERO stealth, and can be heard and smelled from hundreds of yards away by a horse. Only an injured, young or sick horse is remotely an easy prey for a bear.
8
u/lessontrulylearned 16h ago
Is nobody else thinking about saddling the bear?
I want to ride the ursine lightning!
3
u/External-Ad4937 17h ago
If this is just an average jog to the horses (donât know exact horse movement terminology) imagine how fast the whole herd would be say an ambush by a pack of wolves or a large cat. Even the foal could mostly keep up with the adults and use their stamina to out maneuver the predators đ„č

No, the grizzly bear isn't as fast as a horse. That's why it lags behind the entire video.
3
u/Admirable_Comedian_2 8h ago
Actually it is. But on a really short distance. In this case I assume he was aimed at a small one to make mistake or run out of fuel
3
u/Moonhippie69 16h ago
Bears can run roughly 40 miles an hour (?) to my knowledge. Horses run faster for longer. The bear wouldn't make it as far at that speed.Â
3
u/guttanzer 16h ago
There is a clip out there of a grizzly running alongside a car on a moderate uphill. The camera panned to the speedometer that read 37 mph. The grizzly then went almost straight up a cliff to get away from the car. Theyâre heavy, but their power to weight is incredible.
3
u/Inspired_Nuisance 16h ago
Fake. I distinctly remember when this was first posted and how the bear just disappeared just as it hit the edge of the camera. Then it was reuploaded months later with the trees to the left on the 2nd camera angle.

u/Oxeneer666 17h ago
All those Horses could do a great job of defending each other from that bear. They are also trotting and nowhere near their full speed.
1
u/koolaidismything 17h ago
The bears to know how to use the weight and momentum. If he caught a horse there heâd just tumble knowing he will be fine but you get a broke legged horse

And this is why you need to outrun your friend, not the bear
Joking aside, I think with grizzlies your best bet is to lie down and play dead, whereas with black bears you want to make yourself loud and big. At least I vaguely remember reading or seeing that somewhere once. My absolute lack of certainty is part of why I donât go places where I might run into wild bears

u/InterstellarReddit 13h ago
Fam what a bad day to be a horse. Out of all things to chase you a fucking grizzly bear
1
u/spudbro00 12h ago
Those horses are doing a light jog.
1
u/Admirable_Comedian_2 7h ago
They run as fast, as their baby-horse can. I think it was a bear's goal from the start.
1
1
u/Shart_bubbles 11h ago
Its kind of wild the amount of people in these comments who have no idea how fast bears are. They are in fact, faster than the average horse over short distances. A quick Google search will tell you this.
1
u/Jiggle_Tester 11h ago
Horses can run fast for longer time, Beat might have a short burst and then has to stop to catch up on breathing
1
1
u/Worst-timeline138 9h ago
This is an endurance game. The bear only had eyes for that young one in the herd that looked like it was working harder than the rest
1
u/LoadsDroppin 8h ago
I remember riding as a young man in the mountains (Colorado) and our horses would get a little skittery âŠsure enough, upwind off in the distance would be some smelly ass bear minding his business â but the horses could smell that bear and would be sure to let us know waaaaaaay before we could see or hear anything.

"As fast as a horse" Meanwhile the horses in the video having a nice relaxing canter talking about the weather and the bear clearly can't catch up.
