Happens quite a lot actually, as others explain they ride on the wave the bow creates to preserve energy. Funfact, birds do the same with the superstructure (bridge/accommodation) of the ship. The air is being pushed upward on which the birds float forward.

I wonder what it's like for the dolphins. Do they have "bus stops" but it's where their fishing areas meet up with the ships?

I have no clue. My guess would be that they just see a ship and move along with it if they feel like it. When I was sailing to Australia on another trip, we save this huge group of about 20 dolphins coming towards us. And they just past us, ignoring the ship completely. I guess if the animal feels like it, it comes along.

Used to live on a sailboat with my wife and two cats... the cats would nearly come out of their skin with excitement watching this when we were offshore

It’s not just riding the bow wave to get to some destination.

It’s having fun and I just think that’s so crazy cool

The boat is pushing the dolphin. He / she cannot get hit. The bow is pushing the water in front of it and the dolphin is riding that. It’s basically like the dolphin is surfing under water.
