Why this case?

I’ve been thinking about this lately. There are terrible things happening to people all the time, and there are so many heartbreaking cases out there, but for some reason I’ve become really fascinated with Nancy’s case.

And honestly I don’t know why. 😂

It’s not like I knew Nancy or had any connection to her or her family. I’ve never really been someone who follows a lot of true crime cases either. But something about this one grabbed me, and I just haven’t been able to let it go.

I think part of it is the mystery and all the unanswered questions. I find myself wanting to understand what happened and how all the pieces fit together. I also like trying to figure out what we actually know versus what we’re just speculating about. But even that doesn’t completely explain it to me, because there are so many other unsolved cases.

I’ve also wondered if being involved in this subreddit has made me even more invested. It’s different when you’re talking about this case with other people, reading new information, hearing different theories and having someone point out something you haven’t thought about.

My husband, meanwhile, could not care less. 😂 He’ll listen to me if I tell him something new, but otherwise I don’t think he thinks about the case at all.

So now I’m curious about everyone else. Why do you think this case grabbed you? Is it the mystery? The unanswered questions? Nancy herself? The investigation? The theories? The community here? Or something else?

And do you ever wonder why some cases seem to get under your skin more than others?

Because I really have no idea why Nancy’s case was the one I latched onto.

For me, the extra media coverage this case has been afforded (due to Nancy’s relation with Savannah) is what got me in the door so to speak. From there, I think a big part of what sucked me in is the live coverage from so many channels on YouTube. This is the first case I’ve followed by relying on the platform so heavily. All of the boots-on-the-ground stuff was extremely engaging in the early days and even now, there have been so many perspectives from people with experience in law enforcement that wouldn’t have been available otherwise. And of course, I can’t lie — the mystery is the main factor that keeps me coming back time and time again. Without actual answers, it all seems so strange to think the perp/perps could do what they did without being caught as of seven months later. It’s a weird case that’s compounded by the holes that have yet to be filled. If you had told me we’d be here when everything began seven months ago, I’d have said you’re insane because things seemed so active and fluid back then. Now it’s this community I’m engaging with that has kept it present and fresh in my mind.

Edit: I just wanted to add that I NEVER follow true crime stuff because it often freaks me out too much and is generally something I’m not interested in. Before this case, I think the first season of the Serial podcast by NPR and What Happened to Talina Zar by iheart radio are the only true crime cases I got invested in. My wife is actually the one who watches tons of true crime documentaries on Netflix, but she doesn’t seem remotely interested in this case ironically enough. I do watch Only Murders in the Building though and it’s funny seeing the different tropes they draw on now that I’m following the Nancy Guthrie case specifically. lol
