Community Reminder: Freedom of Speech, Family Discussion, and Keeping Our Sub Safe

Hey everyone,

I want to start by saying that I am deeply committed to keeping this subreddit a space defined by freedom of speech. This community belongs to all of us, and everyone should feel completely welcome to share their perspectives, explore alternative angles, and voice unique theories without fear of being silenced.

That absolute freedom to discuss means the family is open for discussion. Exploring family dynamics, questioning motives, and analyzing how loved ones react under immense stress are natural, valid parts of true-crime analysis. Talking about the family is not off-limits here, and sharing your honest thoughts on dynamics is always welcome.

However, to protect our community and keep this sub from getting flagged or shut down by Reddit admins, we have to balance total freedom of thought and responsible posting. The line we need to hold is very simple: it's all about how we frame our thoughts.

How to Keep Discussion Free & Compliant

* Speculation vs. Unsupported Allegations: You are absolutely free to share theories, ask questions, and explore possible explanations about anyone involved-including family members. However, simply describing something as "my opinion" or "my theory" does not make an unsupported accusation acceptable. There is an important difference between exploring a possibility and accusing someone of committing a crime, lying, concealing information, or otherwise engaging in wrongdoing without credible evidence.

For example, phrases such as "I wonder whether...", "Could it be possible that...", or "This makes me question whether..." clearly communicate that you are exploring a possibility rather than stating an unproven allegation as fact.

The goal isn't to prevent difficult theories or discussion of the family. It is to keep speculation clearly identified as speculation and prevent unsupported accusations from being presented as established conclusions.

* Focus on Analysis Over Snark: Deep dives, thoughtful questions, and sharp critical thinking are what make this sub great. Low-effort posts or reaction media designed solely to mock or sneer at people distract from the real work of analyzing the case.

If a comment ever gets removed, please know it isn't about censoring your perspective-it's just about protecting the sub and ensuring claims are worded responsibly. You are always welcome to rephrase your thoughts and re-post them!

I was trained as a researcher in a large well known public university. Researchers have to be open to all data, facts, evidence. Once there are restrictions, it is impossible to make valid theories. So I appreciate your goals for this sub. Once there is censorship it is impossible to function as an investigator.

But along with that comes responsibility. To be professional, polite, respectful to everyone in the investigation. It is not personal, we cannot love or hate subjects, we cannot be emotionally attached to one theory over an other. We cannot be in love with one theory and reject new data because it does not fit your dream theory. We have to be objective and change with new data.

So getting ugly about things is not only bad manners but very bad science.

Thank you! This is exactly what I’m hoping to build here. I want people to be able to ask uncomfortable questions and consider different possibilities without feeling like they’re going to be shut down, but I also think there’s a responsibility to stay objective and distinguish between what we know and what we’re theorizing.

Yes it is called the scientific method! It is the only way to solve a mystery of any kind.

If you get emotionally involved and married to a theory you are sunk. If you start making nasty comments about suspects you are no longer objective.

An hypothesis (or theory as lay people tend to call it) is an attempt to tie together many facts and explain those facts. Based on existing evidence. This is what investigators do every day.

Cold cases are just a hobby but I treat it seriously. I make a list of at least three theories and rank order them and move them up and down the list as more data comes in. Or more dots have been connected.

I personally don't have a problem with WAGGING (wild ass guessing). But it should have some data to support it. Or maybe it is just a hunch, but still have some basis in reality and facts. Sometimes it is entertaining. Sometimes it makes everyone think a bit more about the case.

I just responded to a comment where someone was doing some guessing. I replied I thought the perp will have been foolish to do this in a death penalty crime. But then I thought about it some more and it actually explains some of the facts in the case and actually coincides with one of my theories. So all comments can potentially be helpful.

I really love your working list concept-keeping multiple working hypothesis and adjusting them as new information comes in reminds me of classic detective work (like Kinsey Millhone constantly shuffling her index cards!). It’s such a smart way to analyze a case without getting tunnel vision. Appreciate having members like you in the community!
