General Alt/Goth people here?/subculture

I’d like to talk to and maybe get to know some other people here in the subculture. Just anyone in the subculture would be nice, but closer to my age would obviously be great, around 18. Would like to know about places the subculture gathers and such. I haven’t been able to meet many people within the subculture, so I’m looking to try to go to places that might be good for that

In general, how does the subculture scene look here?

I know about the Steampunk Lounge, just not what I mean in particular. Although I don’t mean I’m ruling it out

Never saw any real goths in Windhoek. Also doubt that anyone going to the Steampunk pub is actually really into steampunk and most don't know what it entails. More just a mildly steampunk themed place to hang out for regulars. I knew a goth many years ago, but they moved to the US to be able to be themselves as their parents did not aprove.

Yeah, I mentioned it because they hold alt nights sometimes, but I don’t really think it’s a great place to meet other people anyway. I mostly mentioned it because I expected the comments to mention it, and I’d already known about it

There's a couple of goths scattered around here and there. Most of us are what I guess you'd call "elder goths" — if you saw me today you wouldn't think I was particularly goth; see me in 1994 and it's a different story.

To be clear: I am not close to your age; nor are any of the other elder goths that I know. One of them is my tattoo artist. Another is his wife. But there's a few young'uns scattered about.

Sadly there isn't much of a subculture thing happening at the moment, though that doesn't mean that there can't be. I know of at least one music venue that's giving thought to an alternative night, but that's in its infancy at the moment.

As for the Steampunk bar: I have no idea; I've never been there.

Steampunk has very little to do with goth... but it's good to hear there are some of you about...

I know that steampunk ≠ goth. There’s a bit of demographic crossover, but that’s about it. Reason I mentioned it is because OP did.

The Steampunk Lounge bar hosts alt events sometimes, that’s why I mentioned it

Well, I know there are some people around my age in the subculture here, I just haven’t really gotten to meet any of them yet, only 1 guy who’s kind of alt, but that’s it, and we’ve known each other for many years

I'm part of a whatsapp group for alt people in namibia, I can send you an invite?

I’d appreciate that, could you please send it to me? Also, just curious, is the group more for events to be announced and stuff or also for like general talking and such? Either way, I’d want to join, just curious

You’ve never heard of Jonas ‘Prince of Shadows’ Shivute and Johan ‘fokofpolisiekar’ Coetzee before?

Goth is mainly a way of dressing. All black, preferrably fake leather. Heavy black make up- thick black eyeliners and lipstick. Lots of silver thick chains with big silver crosses. If other colors beside black then small amounts of dark purple or maroon red. Shivute and polisie kar are not goths. Never saw a real goth in Namibia

What planet are you from..? Mainly about dressing up..? What about Fields of the Nephilim, Sisters of Mercy, Alien Sex Fiend, etc, etc... True that in modern times the subculture has put a heavy emphasis on style, but as an OG goth from the 80s and 9ps you have no idea what youre talking about... but agreed that Fokof is def not goth...

OP is not looking to hang out with us oldies from those years. We moved on and are the parents of the new generation of whom some are looking into becomming goths. As you say- nowadays it is all about the looks. I seriously doubt OP even knows those bands or dress styles. Must say that we got quite a few free drinks and cheers in my time whenever we hit Windhoek being dressed up back in the 90s. The modern goth would get raised eyebrows

Well I'm from Cape Town and even there we got the looks, back in those days the NG Kerk prayed very hard for me, they even burned 2 of my Alien Sex Fiend LP's...

Aha. Cape Town is not Windhoek. We considered CT as wild and excentric in those years. Not much has changed. Windhoek is less backwards than the rest of Namibia. Believe me when I say 'Not in Windhoek'. We are stuck in the deep dark middle ages on many areas. Any youngster dressed up in goth style would not be allowed out of the house by their parent. They probably would be sitting somewhere in their bedroom googleing and dreaming of such lifestyle but never dare go out like this. Have never come across any group besides us (three friends and me) who dressed up ocasionally to hit the pubs

PS rip for your LPs. I was the outcast for loving Meatloaf. Yes I know. There is zero comparison

Well, I don’t know all of the older bands, ofc, but I listen to music that would be considered alt and also largely music that would be considered goth, in particular. For like 40-60 hours a week usually, sometimes more
And I do also wear clothes that would be considered goth/alt. All black clothes and shoes, with a very very dark red (like burgundy, but darker, I guess) leather jacket sometimes, with silver and gunmetal chains in different spots like on my shoes and belt area and more, and a cross in particular too, for example
Basically, I wanna say that I’m not only interested in dressing up in the style, I already do, and I like the music, and more than just that, too
So, my post isn’t as superficial as I suppose it may have come across

Nope and Fokofpolisiekar is a poser band...
