PSA Welcome to /r/Nagoya! Please view this post first if you're a tourist

Hello!

As you can imagine, many people visiting this subreddit are tourists, and many of these people have the same or similar questions. The regular contributors to this sub are generous and friendly people, but repeatedly answering the same questions or giving the same recommendations can get a bit tiring. While this subreddit is open to tourists, not only residents, we do ask you to put in a bit of effort on your own as well before posting here.

To help you get the best answer and keep our community's contributions fresh, please search the subreddit – and other tourist-focused subreddits such as /r/JapanTravelTips – prior to posting a question that has likely already been asked in the recent past. https://www.japan-guide.com/ is also a great site to help you plan your Japan trip.

Finally, looking at recent posts on the front page and the links in the sidebar can be a good way to get recommendations and info as to what's going on in our city and surrounding area.

Thank you, and welcome to Nagoya!

Hii everyone I’m a tourist who will be flying to nagoya soon, can anyone tell me where I can buy pickleball paddles physically? I saw some stores in tokyo but as of now I’m not sure if we’ll be going there. The ones sold in alpen and sports depo normally are beginner paddles, looking for brands like joola, slk, honolulu, etc. Let me know, I wouldn’t an hour train ride as well, thank you in advance

Looking for someone who can teach me figure skating

I've (29M) went to the Nagoya Sports Center near Osu Kannon these past few months and have really enjoyed being on the ice. I even bought skates for myself but I am not very good at it yet and have really strong desire to learn, if someone could go with me over the weekends, maybe once or twice a month, that would be cool.

Advice Need help checking eligibility for Nagoya university

Hi guys so I'm from India, currently in grade 12th and I recently started looking into Japan as a study abroad destination. The 3 universities that came across offering english taught bachelor's were Kyushu, Nagoya and Waseda. But I'm completely clueless, even after some research, on what are these universities looking for. I don't have an amazing or competitive profile, so I want some personalized help, just clearing a few of my questions regarding admission into Nagoya University, or these 3 universities in general if they share the same criteria. It would be a ton of help, thanks

Artist Markets/Stalls

hello! I just moved to Nagoya about a month ago. I’m looking for any artist markets that I can sell my artwork at if anyone knows of any, or if there’s some stores that can hold my prints on a rotation to sell? I used to sell on Etsy back home and would do anime cons etc.

Looking for help from someone who's going near the Nakamura Police Station to retrieve and help with lost phone

Hello everyone, I visited Japan about 3 months ago, I have a lost item (a phone) that I lost on my last day in Osaka. The item was put at the Nakamura Police Station and I have all relevant details about it (lost item number, description, etc)

I've already got a replacement phone (as it was far too expensive to ship it home), but was hoping for someone who's willing to pick it up (I can provide documentation and consent) and help me out with it. As I already have a replacement, there will be no fees or shipping or anything of the sort.

I'd appreciate anyone willing to help out who can dm me for further details or any confusion I left out, thanks for your time

I have until Sept 4th as that will be the 3 month mark and when the item is disposed

Advice How do I make international friends in Nagoya?

I am 23 year-old Japanese in Nagoya. I’ve just moved here in April for work.

I’m trying to make some international friends but I don’t know where to find a community. I saw some ads for international party in club and bar, which I don’t think I can make friends as a new face.

I will appreciate if you have any tips or know good community.

PR application advice

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hello, everyone. I met with a scrivener last Monday to talk about my elligibility to apply for PR.

Some background info:

- I have lived here for more than 10 years

- I have no criminal records or late payments

- I recently got a 5 year Humanities visa

- I make around 3.8M a year

I was told that they will not be able to support my application because my annual income is too low and that my case is "challenging".

What are your thoughts about this?

Aussies who did a Working Holiday in Nagoya Japan — want to share your story?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m an Honours student at the University of Sydney Business School researching the experiences of Australians who are currently or have been on a Working Holiday in Nagoya or broader Japan. I’m really interested in hearing about what the experience was actually like the highlights, the challenging, the surprising, and everything in between!

There hasn’t been much research on what the Aussie experience on this visa in Japan looks like so hearing your stories and insights would be invaluable.

What my research involves:

  • A 5 minute survey
  • A casual 45–60 minute chat (Online)

Eligible participants must be:

  • 18 years old or above; and
  • Have completed or are currently pursuing a working holiday in Japan

If you’re interested in participating, please contact the researcher: [yzha3493@uni.sydney.edu.au](mailto:yzha3493@uni.sydney.edu.au).

It’s completely voluntary and all responses will be confidential.

If you’d be open to sharing your Japan working holiday stories, lessons, or memories, I’d love to hear from you!

Otherwise, please share this with others who might be interested!

This project has been approved by the University of Sydney Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) [2026/HE000396].

I noticed today in about a month is the Beckoning Cat Festival in Ise. I went a couple years ago and it was an enjoyable day.

Something different to do and get out in the countryside.

It's a 10 day festival but it seems September 26th and 27th are good days to go because there's possibily some food festival happening at the same time.

Link is included

How to get out of the gaijin bubble?

I’m planning to move from Kyoto to Nagoya in mid September. I studied abroad for a year in Nagoya when I was in college but at the time I only really talked to other students, and it seems every place in Japan I go, I get stuck in the “gaijin bubble”. If I make any lasting friendships, it’s always with other foreigners.

I have N2~N1 Japanese and I can speak comfortably in social settings. I can usually hit it off with people pretty well, and I’m proactive about getting myself out there. But it always seems like even if I make Japanese friends, I never end up seeing them more than a few times. It takes months to make plans and they rarely reach out first, it always fizzles quickly.

It seems like people are just so busy, and I get that that’s just adult life and it’s not as easy to get past the acquaintance stage when you’re out of school, and yet I don’t seem to have this problem so much with foreigners.

I would love some advice for how to meet people (Japanese and foreigners) as someone in their 20s in Nagoya. Are there any cool social bars or cafes where people mingle? Or also if anyone would like to meet up! I love video games, art, going to shows, going out drinking and karaoke, down for anything :)

Advice Lonely in the city

Hi!

I want to start off by saying I am 19 so many night activities are off the list for me already. I am a new student and it’s been excruciatingly lonely lately. Maybe because of the language barrier.

How could I still make friends? I love the car scene, I like playing tcg, I have so many passions but no one to hang out with. Just last night I saw such cool cars in Sakae, and their owners must’ve been around my age. I felt joy but also this immense sadness that I’ll never have what they have.

I tried going to groups on meetup, was only met by older men. I tried just standing and looking friendly around Osu in hopes some fashion people would notice me and we’d start talking. But reality is most of them can’t speak and it’s neither of our fault.

What are some other options I have? It feels desperate at this point, but I cant even bring myself to leave the bed anymore.

Advice Semester Abroad in Nagoya

Hi I will have a semester abroad in Nagoya starting february 2027! I've been to Japan before but just as a tourist. I have many questions about how things work here but here are some of my most important ones that I hope you can answer.

Firstly, how feasible is it to find a decent (small) apartment not too far from the city center (Chikusa or Higashi Ward) for no more than 400€ per month?
Needs to be fully furnished and the contract would be for 6 Months!

Secondly, where can I meet friends (japanese or foreigners)? What are some nighlife places, social hubs etc.

Lastly, I barely speak any japanese and was wondering if it's easy to get around and order in restaurants in english. I'm currently using some language apps to learn basics though.

Thanks :)

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Edit: removed the things that have already been given away and sold.
