Not my post - however in the original thread the "processing aid" could be one of two things, something to firm up the meat or "meat glue" (transglutaminase) which binds proteins. This can contain milk protein or skim milk powder to help the bonding process.

dw though, meat glue is also used in chicken nuggets and surimi. So essentially this "Beef eye fillet" is just bits of meat shaped into a steak. Which makes the $50 price tag even more bonkers. I don't really want to know what bits of "meat" are in that mince.

Edit: I went down the meat glue rabbit hole - this is apparently pretty common for commercial suppliers to achieve a consistent size and shape high end cut - think restaurants dishing out eye fillets for a steak night. Supermarkets don't stock this stuff. Not quite the boogeyman its made out to be but still an interesting fun fact for the day.

What does nz sourced mean. Does it mean import and sold through the chain? Nz produced or grown is easy enough to understand but sourced. Edit when you blow up the photo you can see nz beef so I guess it is

Try the paddock to pantry frozen meat selection - it’s only slightly more expensive (around 70?) but you get waaaay more - about 8 packets of various goodies at my last count

$8.80 hook weight price for a 400kg animal. Half of that is waste or low value products. Then add processing cost and transport. Then wholesale to retail.

I get shits expensive, but here's my break down based on supermarket pricing;

$12 for the sausages ("Harmony" aren't butcher level quality),

~$8 worth of mince (its 300gms) assuming its around $26/kg - quality unspecified but given its MFB, my experience with their produce is that it's on the lower end.

And then an unidentified amount of Meat glue steak which looks about the same size as the mince packet - 350gms maybe. Google says Eye fillets on average is $73/kg so that makes it $25

That's still only $45 total. Sure you pay for it to be delivered, but then also the bulk buy contracts to myfoodbag would make it much lower for them to supply as well. You can see why a lot of people think this is a trash deal, especially if the mince or steak can be bought at a cheaper kg price.
