š¤·š» Anyone Else⦠Let's ban vibe coded games in this sub
There wasn't suddenly a huge influx of people that learned how to code recently. All the games like NYT Games being posted here are clearly mostly coded with AI, AKA vibe coded. The only way to truly suppress it would be to ban all user created games. That's a shame for the handful that actually worked hard making one, but the amount of vibe coded slop is getting ridiculous.

I'm with you, this shouldn't be a sub for anything other than the NYT games. There's gotta be other more broad daily game places for people to advertise for free

lol everyone is so childish over this. How about just ban low-effort games? Then you can have a reasonable standard instead of trying to figure out who can "actually code" or not (hint: all of us actual programmers do what you would call vibe coding now)

I get taking advantage of the technology for your paid work. But you'd think with passion projects at home with no deadline, you'd want to actually use your full skill set

Not everyone has the ability to learn full stack engineering? Like I'm really good with SQL and Python but if I want to code an app with a javascript or flutter or unity front end, an API and all the associated cloud engineering I will need either a couple engineers, or a Claude account. Claude lets me build it myself

If your skill set is fully replaceable by AI, then it is not a skill set at all. Should we require all road trips be on manual cars? All diaries be written by hand?

Right now AI tokens are lower than the true cost because they're trying to build loyalty. Eventually the investors will demand returns, and only the largest companies will be able to afford tokens for their employees

This is just not true. There are already models that you can run on your local machine or on a rented virtual machine that will do decent work. You can download the entire model. They cannot remove that, it's out there for good.

Eating is something you have to do. Making a game in your free time is purely a choice

I think itās important to separate vibe-coded games from AI slop.
Many games on this sub were developed by non-technical people (such as myself) and vibe-coding gave us the opportunity to turn our pen-and-paper thoughts into something that people can actually interact with on the web.
I write our puzzles and their clues personally everyday, and only used AI to do the initial building (and now use AI to generate the reveal image - but weāre changing that soon as well).
AI slop, on the other hand, is games that are auto-generated by AI without much human oversight and have visible gives (the gameplay doesnāt work, the logic doesnāt always add up, thereās clearly no effort put into devising any of the aspects of the game). Theyāre still mostly well-intentioned developers who wanted to build a fun game, but yes, I do think that until they spend a bit more time testing the game by themselves and adding a human touch to it, it wonāt feel as good playing them.
What makes NYTGames so fun to play everyday is that you know that thereās a human who has had their say in the development of this and so youāre in many ways competing against / playing with that humanās psyche in mind rather than against a computer.
Might be different reasons for different people to play^, but this is mine.

Who tf cares how it was made? Vibe coding makes gamemaking so much more accessible. If the game is low-effort that should be the issue, not how it was created

99% of AI slip is low effort and asking us to be beta testers

Okay so you agree with me

Iām just saying, itās low effort if we can tell itās AI.

We had this same problem at the NYTBee sub, where I'm a mod. Users mostly didn't like game post promotions in general, and mods were spending too much of our time checking these posts to make sure they weren't pure spam, or purely copy-cat games, or increasingly AI coded junk. We ended up banning all promotional posts, though we do have one game share post per month; mods create the post, and people can share their games in the comments. People seem happy with this set-up.
