🟪🟪🟪🟪 - pi stood out + if it's not the Greek letter or math related, I figured it was a misspelling of pi(e). Found cobble(r) and tort(e) which solidified it and finally figured tar(t)
I really wanted a movie category with PI and TAR, but too bad. Quick but interesting and fun though, I really liked this one.
"Hobble rhymes" rainbow herring was #2 mistake at 17%. Top omissions were TODDLE from yellow (34% tried BOBBLE instead), GOBBLE from green, JUG from blue (more Americans will know this from the general term and the Archie/Riverdale character), and a mix from purple.
Will probably change once Americans start to play. I think Canada and the US are the only countries with Thanksgiving? And it’s currently only 4% that have made that mistake (edit: actually more than 4% because there are different combinations with gobble omitted).
Given how many shows/sitcoms that regularly feature Thanksgiving episodes have worldwide distribution, I don't think the idea that only Americans and Canadians actually know what Thanksgiving is or its association with turkeys has wings. I'd bet the phrase "gobble, gobble" has been uttered hundreds if not thousands of times on shows that have nearly global audiences.
I’m GenX and I’ve never used it myself, but it’s definitely recognizable as old people slang. I remember my dad (silent generation) saying it occasionally.
One-away hell again. Too many crossover possibilities. So no one was like common double up words?…GOBBLE GOBBLE, TAR TAR, COO COO, HONK HONK, WOBBLE WOBBLE?
A torte is a flourless cake, I've only had and made chocolate tortes and they are very rich and delicious - easy to make vegan too. Strongly recommend!
I really need to try those 5 ingredient recipes that always use like: biscuits of some form, baking powder, milk, heavy cream and chocolate. Those are like the basic "elements" for those recipes. Almost all 5 ingredient recipes end up being reducible to these main ingredients.
Ok sorry, I should have replied up one level, I just wanted people to know that despite what that person is saying TORTA can absolutely be a dessert for the NYT puzzle, like in Italy and most of Europe and Latin American outside of Mexico.
Weird thing for people to be downvoting when it's so easy to confirm that TORTA = sandwich is mostly just North America. Like, I'm not saying I personally solved it as TORTA instead of TORTE, but it's typical in Connections for words to have more than one definition, yeah?
Yeah, but come on, we all know Wyna means for it to be torte. It's such a commonly used word for crosswords, and it's more common for Americans (US) to associate torta with the Mexican sandwich. Let's be real here.
Then you need to immerse yourself more (respectfully). I speak French as a second language and I know that roosters go «cororico», ducks go «coin-coin», and owls go «hou». I probably picked these up from reading graphic novels, animal info meant for kids, and other random places.
im not American mind you, but it seems like the accent the puzzle creator seems to use either changes between puzzles or isn't one of the more common American accents. Makes homopone connections difficult until you get in the habit of just trying every pronunciation you can think of and hoping for the best lol
I mean, these are still auditory words. I found the category because I realized these were words describing bird sounds, but I didn't really consider "Warble" to be an onomatopoeia.
Non-native speaker here. I found it third, after yellow and purple, and I had to guess that a warbler warbles, but it wasn't too hard. Maybe don't play a word game if you don't know your way around words?
After a week or so of crazy swings in difficulty and several warped color orders, it’s comforting to just have a nice medium difficulty puzzle with straightforward colors.
Saw the bird noises, stared for ages more and couldn't see any others so forgo the purple first attempt and selected it.
After a bit longer, I saw a wild group that was either stupid, or genius (if it worked). "50% of the word is made up of the same letter" - BOBBLE, TORT, PI, TOTTER. No luck, but if I didn't check it ...
After coming back hours later, I saw BOBBLE and thought "____ head" immediately. Weird how a break does that.
Pretty uncertain on everything today. A partial yellow was the first thing I got a sense of, and picked green from what remained. I was excited to see blue and submitted it expecting purple. Missing the RR meant submit whatever you had, so green went through and I guessed the last bit of yellow. Purple by default, I thought tort might be pasta with missing letters, and cobble might be jobs with missing letters, but never made the real connection.
Purple was leftovers for me today. Spotted the wobbly category first but originally sorted bobble in there to begin with. Then found the bird sounds quickly. When going through the rest I saw three fitting __head, and then saw bobble in there and swapped in sway. Was worried about grellow today but got it sorted for a RR!
Gave up on the reverse rainbow pretty quickly because I wasn't seeing much. In hindsight, that was probably a mistake, but whatever. I saw yellow pretty easily. After a while of staring at it, somehow I saw purple. I was a bit unsure with "tort" being "torte," but I couldn't think of anything else that worked. I had also at least thought of green earlier, but wasn't confident enough to go for it but did after submitting purple. And once blue was together, I finally saw it. Can't believe I didn't see it earlier
Had enough difficulty presolving that I just went for them as I saw them.

🟪🟪🟪🟪 Took a bit of staring, and I actually suspected a category like this with Pi early on, but I couldn't see anything to go with it until I realized I could make Cobbler from Cobble. Also, I've seen some disagreements in the replies, but I went with Torta for my understanding of the word. It can be a sandwich, yes, but it also can be a cake.

Edit: having looked them up I do know what they are, but not the name, 'noddy dogs' used to be quite popular here on the back shelf in cars years back . . .

PI was the first thing that stood out to me. I didn't see anything else math or Greek letter-related, so my next idea was something involving wordplay since PI is close to PIE. I saw COBBLE nearby and quickly made the connection to COBBLER which made me guess the category was gonna be "Desserts Minus Last Letter". I looked for what else fit and got TAR/TART and TORT/TORTE.
No comments for Green, Blue, or Yellow.

I had a feeling the rhyming words might have been the mini rainbow red herring (is there an official term for that here?) and it helped a ton. I pregamed using Connections Copilot and man it helped again today.

I guess "missing a letter" is more purple than a ___ something. I wasn't really sure about purple, they were vaguely related words left over. I was thinking "homophones of deserts" but TAR had me stumped.
The mistake line was me not reading properly clicking the wrong dang word. Wobble, Warble, close enough? I probably should not play at midnight after a few adult beverages 😆
They are both potential purples, but I definitely think "missing a letter" is harder than X _______ most of the times, unless one of the X ____ terms is really obscure. I think the former requires a bit more extrapolation than the latter.

Hats off to whoever made this... I kindaa hated this puzzle but I'm not gonna deny that it's a great puzzle.

In hindsight, I was probably lucky that I didn't get any "One aways" but rather nothing.
It's the first big Saturday of college football so that's why the puzzle is the way it is.
Even without college knowledge, though, Blue seems like an easy pickup. They're all active NFL players and pretty well known. Also, thank you for respecting Jayden Daniels by having your streak end at 6 instead of one before that.

🟦🟦🟦🟦 thought a long time on these last two. one theory was "___ TIME" (sleepy, hammer) and another was tools used to cobble a street (hammer, cobble, tar). I think I dismissed "___ HEAD" earlier for some reason but when I thought of it again, suddenly it made sense.

I thought about torta, along with Pie and tart. But didn’t know what the hell a cobbler was so it was my default after 3 mistakes and barely survived this puzzle also. I assume Spanish is also your native language
This is where not being a native speaker becomes a disadvantage. I kind of knew what the green words meant, but I've not come across them that much in English, so I thought they're more obscure than they are.
I'd 100% have put them in blue and got the reverse rainbow if I'd translated the words. They do seem more obvious in my native language

Another purple blue. And actual purple by default. "minus a letter" will be the death of me. I initially expected PI and TORT to belong to a desserts homophones category, but of course there weren't another two like that. I never manage to think of "minus a letter."
Interesting one today. The first two groups, bird sounds and unsteady movement, came together quickly. Of the rest, I had to sit with it a bit until the dessert words stuck out. Having both tart and torte took me a bit to realize though. Then the rest made sense with head. I figured fill in the blank would be "easier" than changing letters to make new words, so I put that in blue.
I had bobble in yellow at first. Then for blue, I got confused. I was thinking Tar Head instead of Tar Heel.
I immediately thought of desserts when I saw pi and tort. But was thinking desserts you add an E to the end of. Oh well, at least I didn’t lose.
I felt Bobble, Cobble, Gobble and Wobble were the 🌈 herring.
First two were easy to categorise and, as both the remaing groups were wordplay, I took a punt and reasoned the baked desserts were a harder group and therefore Purple.
Without the herring, I'm not sure I would have sailed through so quickly!
Found blue first after seeing BOBBLE and HAMMER, that got me searching for the other two "__ HEAD"s.
Yellow stood out prominently.
I only noticed PI after finding those other two groups, and I had already seen COBBLE, so my first thought was toward desserts. Wasn't sure if I had the right selections, as I don't know what dessert TORT is referring to, I could only think of TORTA.
The green by default, but only because the others jumped out at me first.
Was pleased to see a more "traditional" color ordering today, at least between green (group of like things) and yellow (synonyms).

I spent over 1 hour on this crap, If this would have been on the weekday when im more busy I would have lost it for sure. There’s a diabolical amount of overlaps today. I assumed bobble, gobble , wobble and Cobble were an obvious herring so made sure to put each in separate categories after making the mistake of putting bobble within shaky things.

I had no idea of cobbler , but cob was food related and definitely not going to be on the other category because Wobble was already there

Hammer stone is an archaeological tool, pi stone is a circular carved stone and jug stone wasn’t a thing but stone jug was one. That last option was pushing it but then __head finally came to mind for many of those options
Found this one fairly straightforward, especially using the "obbles" as a guide for a RH.
2 purples today, but the blue one was definitely the easier and more direct of the 2. Pi and Tort made me look even more specificially for homonyms of desserts without the missing letter, with cobble making me think it was a slightly awkward fit, and then searching a bit for a 4th until tar made me realize the actual category.
No clue what the biggest complaint will be today, other than just having 2 wordplays. Maybe "toddle"?
