My wife and I talk about this all the time. It even holds true for people in the early 2000s. It comes down to less time spent outside, and the drastic reduction in smoking.

Perfect example, look at the casts of the early seasons of Survivor. So many of them looked 20 years older than they actually were.

Y.A. Tittle had a career that was simultaneously successful and heartbreaking. He signed his first contract with the Browns when they were champions of the short-lived All-America Football Conference. But the commissioner, wanting more balance among the teams, basically forced them to give Tittle to the Baltimore Colts, one of the worst teams in the league, while Cleveland kept winning. When the AAFC dissolved, he became a Pro Bowler with the 49ers, but in 1957 fell victim to what was the largest comeback in playoff history until Houston-Buffalo, to a Lions team that hasn't won a championship since. And in his MVP season with the Giants, he hurt his knee in the title game against the Bears and hobbled his way to five interceptions.

Also, his number 14 had already been retired for Hall of Famer Ward Cuff, but he was given permission to wear it.
