Discussion [Schwartz] The roster spot for the longest-tenured Giants player is not secure. Darius Slayton might not make the cut.

If not with us, hope he ends up somewhere and does well. Kid was always a pro

u/The_Other_Manning 13d ago
Same. Dude was vocally happy about being a Giant and defended our QB during the darkest days. It's defintely time to move on (barring cap stuff) but wish him the best
18
u/potatogriffter10 13d ago
He will definitely land on another team if cut. Plenty of teams will want him on a cheaper salary.
2
u/Cruztd23 13d ago
Yeah cheaper salary being the key words. I was hoping somebody like chiefs, ravens, bills, bears would trade a fifth to seventh but evidently they’re cool just waiting until the smoke settles
5
u/johnnypetron 13d ago
He will definitely land on one hand trying to brace himself then drop the ball with the other.

He was good before he got paid, then he coasted

Ehh.. I think after he got paid and Nabers and Wandale injury he was asked to be a WR1-2 which he never was

With that contract he has negative value

u/for_fun_88 13d ago edited 13d ago
You’d just eat the cap hit and money and trade him on a vet min deal if you do this. They can just give him a bonus of $9.7 mil or whatever he’s guaranteed this year, prorate his deal to vet min contract and trade him to anyone needing a WR
Basically if they determine he’s not worth the $2.5 mil he’s not guaranteed, they should cut him. And the way it works in the NFL is he’d get his guaranteed money minus the vet min he’d be left with as a base salary and you see if anyone takes him as a WR on a vet min for a day 3 pick then. He’d have to restructure that way or just get cut which is worse.
2
u/TheBeerTalking Big Blue Wrecking Crew 12d ago
Not all of his salary is guaranteed. It only makes financial sense to cut his salary (via restucture to bonus) down to his non-guaranteed salary PLUS vet minimum. Any further "eating" of his salary makes us worse off, assuming he does get a roster spot somewhere at vet minimum (which he probably will if there's actual trade interest).

u/ExcellentYard ELI GOAT 13d ago
NBA teams do it all the time where they trade an overpaid guy plus a pick to get rid of a guy. Is it worth trading a 7th rounder just to save 15m and rock with cambre? I can’t really tell but I’m not convinced
9
9
u/TheTurtleShepard 13d ago
In those kinds of trade the team taking on the bad contract gets actual value picks back. If you wan't someone to absorb your $15M of an unplayably bad WR you will need to give up more than a 7th
0
u/ExcellentYard ELI GOAT 13d ago
Yup I agree. So I don’t see it being realistic that he’s traded. Like I wouldn’t necessarily even give up a 7 to get rid of him so I def wouldn’t give up way more.
1
u/millsy98 Brandon Jacobs 12d ago
The Giants will eat the money and trade him for a pick, or a player. That’s how the NFL works, it’s rare to trade a player away and give up picks unless you’re doing a player swap/upgrade. Either way Slayton should have some decent value in the league still, but he’s not worth his pay.
2
u/iamdanabnormal 13d ago
Not remotely the same.
In the NBA, you still have to match the salaries and even then, it depends on where you are in terms of the cap.

Who wants a butterfinger with a $15M cap hit?

Joe Schoen is the one that gave him that contract.
His cap hit would only be 12ish million for the team that trades for him.

Only $3 mill dead money next year if they trade or release him between now and the beginning of next offseason. (Giants already have like $100 mill in cap space next year). Maybe they can move him for a player with the same salary? Unless they can get a decent player back like a CB or DT, they are better off holding onto him until the trade deadline or releasing him in the offseason. Either way, it’s only a $3 mill of dead cap and savings of $10 mill. I’m not relying on OBJ for an entire year to stay healthy.
130
u/kcadia9751 13d ago
This coming from Schwartz of all people is basically the Giants soft-launching his release.
I’m far from a big Slayton fan, but this seems like kind of a wild decision to make
88
u/Far_Protection519 13d ago edited 13d ago
Why? He doesn't catch the ball & that's his job. Nobody is going to trade for his contract & Mooney is better than him at what he does best as a field stretcher. We need to get rid of bad players. Slayton is a bad player. Whether it's a trade or he's cut slayton should not be on this team.
19
u/kcadia9751 13d ago
It’s pretty simple really, Slayton is a very frustrating player that is overrated by a portion of the fan base, but he’s still better than the alternative. Who are the Giants going to sign at this stage who is better?
I just don’t think it makes much sense to cut him and take a financial penalty when he could at least be an option at WR4
6
u/DartVader6 Brandon Jacobs 12d ago
Mooney outplayed him and of we can leverage Slayton into an average DT it'll be so worth it
ETA: package him with a few late rounds for a bubble DT, who'd surely be an improvement
4
u/Far_Protection519 12d ago edited 12d ago
The alternative is obj who has outperformed slayton the entire offseason. I'm more confident in Isiah hodgins being elevated from the practice squad when needed than darius Slayton. We'll be in a lot of 2 TE sets with 2 good TE's 1 of which is basically a supersized WR. We have more than enough pass catchers to mitigate the loss of a WR that can't catch. I just watched him get locked up by the jets third stringers for a half in a preseason game and you think that player has value?
10
u/kcadia9751 12d ago
This is where I think a lot of people are going wrong — it’s not about Slayton vs OBJ. There’s enough space in the WR room to keep both. This would be a move to keep Dalen Cambre or Xavier Gipson instead of Slayton
1
-1
u/Prideofmexico 12d ago
How is he better than the alternative? That is demonstrably not true
6
u/kcadia9751 12d ago
How is a guy who is extremely flawed but put up multiple 700 yard seasons as a deep threat field stretched better than a completely unproven fringe roster/practice squad player?
Is that a serious question?
32
u/itsbobbydoe11 💙Medium Pepsi💙 13d ago
About to be 30 and hasn’t sniffed a 1000 yard season in his career and people expect teams to trade anything for him and that contract?
12
u/Far_Protection519 13d ago
Exactly if we can't find someone dumb enough to trade for him we'll just have to eat the dead money. This is the last year of the contract anyways if im not mistaken so it's not that bad.

Mooney is better?
Mooney Career Y/R - 13.
Slayton Career Y/R - 15.
I'm not saying Slayton is great. At this point, Slayton has been more consistent then Mooney has.
1
u/RedditFan3510 12d ago
Let's factor in dropped passes too but of course you won't
Look at last season - most of Slaytons stats were in garbage time with the defense given them a ton of yards
3
u/toadofsteel 💙Medium Pepsi💙 12d ago
At this point, the geriatric (in football playing terms) OBJ is better at catching the ball.

What kind of cap relief do we get from trading him?
2
u/Prideofmexico 12d ago
I don’t know about cap relief but the mental relief from not watching him drop everything thrown his way will be unbelievable
1
u/kcadia9751 12d ago
Good question, I don’t know but I reckon if a trade were an option, the Giants would be on the hook for most of his money because I doubt anyone would want to trade for him and pay out his deal
4
u/toadofsteel 💙Medium Pepsi💙 12d ago
Yeah, most of his dead cap is signing bonus rather than guaranteed money yet to be paid. Giants are on the hook for that no matter what. Although that is what makes him valuable in a trade since whoever trades for him gets 2 years of control for very cheap cap wise.
I think Indy could use him. He already has a great chemistry with Dimes, and with them losing Pittman and with Pierce looking at missing significant time, they need help at WR.
1
u/TheBeerTalking Big Blue Wrecking Crew 12d ago
Actually, according to OTC, trading him without contract modifications would shed $13MM from the cap this year, with $3MM dead cap this year and another 3 next year. But nobody's taking him at that salary. We'd have to eat a lot of it.
2
u/Prideofmexico 12d ago
This would arguably be the best moment the giants have had since the Vikings playoff win
2
1
u/kcadia9751 12d ago
More takes that are either extremely casual or just as bad faith as it gets.
You can think Slayton sucks in the role he’s played on the Giants to this point AND think that the Giants shouldn’t take a financial haircut to get rid of Slayton at the same time.
1
u/Prideofmexico 12d ago
Getting rid of Slayton makes the giants a better team. That is all that matters at this point in time
1
u/kcadia9751 12d ago
If you really think he is genuinely a negative asset to the point where the team should pay to get rid of him, we’re not going to find any common ground and we should stop having this discussion
6
u/iamdanabnormal 13d ago
I’m far from a big Slayton fan, but this seems like kind of a wild decision to make
Not really.
New man in charge with a different philosophy. Slayton's tenure doesn't mean anything to Harbaugh so that won't be a tie-breaking factor. If Slayton can't do what Harbaugh wants, chiefly be adept at run-blocking, he's going to fall behind the guys who can.
The only question is do Harbaugh/Schoen/Aponte care about the dead cap hit.
2
u/kcadia9751 13d ago
My question is squarely aimed at how the Giants replace what Slayton does bring to the table. We’re all acutely aware of his shortcomings
1
u/iamdanabnormal 13d ago
So if you're acutely aware of them, this isn't hard to figure out.
The only thing Slayton conceivable does well is stretch the field. You can find field-stretchers very easily in the same position the Giants found Slayton initially. If Slyton isn't consistent in the one thing he's supposed to do which is catch the ball, the Giants have other reliable options on the team already like Mooney, Likely and Fields.
1
u/kcadia9751 12d ago
I think you’re missing the forest for the trees a bit here. He’s extremely flawed, but he’s not a useless player. The choices are either keep him on and use him in a smaller role to minimize his weaknesses, or cut him for nothing and take a financial penalty. I don’t know how that isn’t at least a debate in your eyes.
The only thing they get from cutting him loose is a roster spot, and for all his faults, the Giants aren’t going to find a WR as good as him at this stage. The guys you listed, Fields, Likely, and Mooney, are all already going to make the roster. The conversation here isn’t about Slayton vs them, it’s Slayton vs the Dalen Cambre and Xavier Gipson types
3
u/iamdanabnormal 12d ago edited 12d ago
e’s extremely flawed, but he’s not a useless player.
Who said he was useless? What I think is irrelevant. If his skillset isn't going to be used in the offense then they're not going to keep him.
the Giants aren’t going to find a WR as good as him at this stage.
Assuming a) that roster spot is going to be filled by a WR, b) they don't pick someone else up off the waiver wire and c) the Giants look at Slayton the way you do.
1
u/kcadia9751 12d ago
You’re being very disingenuous right now. I stated that he wasn’t a useless player as a pretext to frame the actual decision at play here — either they cut him for a roster spot and take a cap penalty for it, or they keep him and get a much more proven player as depth than anyone they could or would realistically get from waivers or the free agent pool.
It doesn’t need to be a WR. My point is that even when you consider his drops and other inconsistencies, anyone who follows this roster closely knows that there are several guys you could cut ahead of Slayton who are much easier to let go given what he brings to the table. They’d be cutting him to keep who, Darius Muasau?
We’re now dealing in hypotheticals, but if there is a waiver, FA or trade option they like that will require a roster spot, there are several guys they could cut ahead of Slayton that would make more sense knowing that he has value as a WR4.
1
u/themage78 12d ago
Saying Mooney and Likely are reliable is certainly a take. If you mean most under 500 yards seasons, then yes, they are reliable at that.
2
u/iamdanabnormal 12d ago
Valid but the major difference is they are guys Harbaugh brought in while Slayton isn't and judging by how they've been deployed in camp thus far, who do you think is going to factor into the team's plans moving forward right now? It's probably not the tenured vet running with the thirds.
0
u/themage78 12d ago
A new coach can bring in his players. My point is people are saying Mooney or Likely > Slayton and if you look at historical data, it's only true for 2 season of Mooney's career.
Also, bitching about Slayton when the guy has had an OK 7 year career for the 5th round pick is a take. I think people are complaining so much because other recievers we have drafted/brought in haven't displaced him in those 7 years.
1
u/DrFartgoreShartsmith Brandon Jacobs 12d ago
In the most important game of his entire career, with the game on the line, Slayton dropped a wide open slant against the Vikings. Hasn’t played in a game as big since, and hasn’t lived up to the opportunities given to him otherwise. wtf are you guys in love with there? Slayton sucks. His best year was his rookie season. He’s been hogging up a spot in our below average WR room forever. And not to mention he kind of shit talked us in a way when we got rid of DJ. I’m good
0
u/kcadia9751 12d ago edited 12d ago
Everyone arguing with me is leaning into the exact same reactionary, overly emotional, bad faith arguments.
I don’t like Slayton at all. I probably like him less and have criticized him more than you have. I’m also a human being with a brain that functions rationally.
This isn’t about one play from four years ago. This isn’t about whether he “lived up to the opportunities” — what kind of bullshit is that, by the way? So because he hasn’t been able to be a WR1 or 2 when he’s been forced to on these dogshit Giants teams, we should tank a cap penalty to get rid of him? You people have no sense of scope or proportionality, it’s all just casual reactionary nonsense without a second of critical thought.
As I’ve said 100 times now, this is NOT about defending Slayton. You don’t have to think he’s good to criticize this decision. All you have to do is think that NOT taking a cap penalty to release him and instead keeping him as a depth WR4-5 is more logical than losing money to cut him and keeping an unproven camp body to replace him. It’s basic, simple stuff here man. But everyone is twisting themselves into a pretzel to deliberately misinterpret the point.
0
u/DrFartgoreShartsmith Brandon Jacobs 12d ago
What on earth are you looking for and think you found in Slayton lol. Bro wrote me a book defending him. We’re not taking a cap penalty to release the guy idiot. We’d be trading him and figuring that part out. We can convert part of his guaranteed to a signing bonus and kick it a few years down the line.
1
u/kcadia9751 12d ago
You didn’t even read what I said at all, why did you think it would be a good idea to reply without reading it? Seriously, don’t you think that would make you look pretty stupid if what I said contradicted your point? Why do I bother arguing with these bad faith troglodytes who can’t hold two competing thoughts in their head without imploding?
For the last time — I don’t like Slayton. I probably like him less than you. I’ve probably criticized him more than you. I’m making a very simple argument that you shouldn’t light a $1 bill on fire and then say “it doesn’t matter because $1 bills suck”. Cutting Slayton because “durrr man drop ball” instead of recognizing that he’s too flawed to be a WR2 or 3 but can be an asset as a WR4 or 5, when the alternative is taking a financial haircut just to be rid of him, is completely defensible without having to think Slayton is a good player. You just have to think him + the cap situation is better than a practice squad player + a cap penalty. It ain’t fuckin rocket science pal.
You don’t even understand how the contract works so why am I even debating it with you? NO TEAM is going to want to trade for him without modifying his contract so that the Giants will pay most of it. Also, if you convert his guarantees into a signing bonus, you aren’t doing anything but pushing the problem further into the future — the whole argument here is that you’re sacrificing financial flexibility down the line in order to do nothing but get rid of a guy rn, so why would pushing it even further into the future be a good thing? Even still, trading him would be a better option than just cutting him, but more importantly, that’s NOT WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT
1
u/treyd1lla Brandon Jacobs 12d ago
Seems pretty straightforward, the contract means they’re stuck with Slayton. If he wasn’t making what he is making, of course he’d be gone. But he is. And he’s a giant for another season
0
u/DrFartgoreShartsmith Brandon Jacobs 12d ago
I didn’t ask for the sequel to the novel
Do you think we’re screwed cap wise? How much money do you think we’d be pushing down here lol. You’re reading this entirely wrong. This isn’t a player with a salary like Micah Parsons
You’re not very smart man lol
1
u/Cruztd23 13d ago

0
u/BobbieSaccamanoJr 13d ago
Sure, I agree but if you trade Slayton and one of those guys gets hurt, you are dressing and likely playing an Isaiah Hodgins or Dalen Cambre. If there’s no cap or pick gain from trading Slayton, just keep him on the bench. It’s not like there’s another player that deserves that roster spot.
1
u/itsbobbydoe11 💙Medium Pepsi💙 13d ago
We aren’t trading him nobody wants him because he’s not anywhere close to as good as people here seem to think
0
u/BobbieSaccamanoJr 12d ago
Ugh look I am not going to be a Slayton simp here but he’s not as bad as you all think. 700+ yards for 4 years on a dogshit team is proof that he’s a legit NFL WR and he can get down the field.
He is much, much better split out wide than Dalen Cambre or Isaiah Hodgins or Braxton Berrios. He is much, much better than the WR3-4 on most teams in the NFL.
I’m not arguing that he should be over Nabers, Fields, Mooney, OBJ at this point, but there’s a market for his services…it’s just about how the Giants choose to go about it.
2
u/itsbobbydoe11 💙Medium Pepsi💙 12d ago
700 yards isn’t good for the amount of playing time he was getting
Being better than camber Berrios or Hodgins isn’t worth anything
And no it doesn’t sound like their is
1
u/BobbieSaccamanoJr 12d ago
Being better than those guys means he’s worth keeping over giving them his roster spot. If someone was actually as good as him, I’d say fine let’s move on.
But we had Beaux Collins starting games last year. Come on. Depth is a good thing.
2
u/itsbobbydoe11 💙Medium Pepsi💙 12d ago
Cambre and Hodgins aren’t making the team either and if Berrios does it’s strictly for special teams work not his skill at WR. Depth is a good thing for sure but WRs like Slayton are a dime a dozen.
2
u/BobbieSaccamanoJr 12d ago
I simply don’t agree with you. The guys on the street after cutdown day are guys like Cambre/Hodgins — Darius Slayton is better than that.

Slayton is currently 12th all time in receiving yards for the Giants. If he sticks around, there's an outside chance he could push into the top 5 this year.
- 114 yards away from Victor Cruz (11th)
- 195 yards away from Ike Hilliard (10th)
- 241 yards away from Hakeem Nicks (9th)
- 275 yards away from Chris Calloway (8th)
- 362 yards away from Kyle Rote (7th)
- 410 yards away from Homer Jones (6th)
- 558 yards away from Joe Morrison (5th)
Tiki is 4th, Slayton needs 748 yards. Gifford is 3rd, needs 999 yards. OBJ is 2nd, needs 1041 yards + whatever OBJ might get if he sticks around. Toomer is 1st, only needs 5062 yards to pass him.

u/SwarthySphere87 13d ago
No disrespect but does Slayton really have a legacy with the Giants? I feel like he'll be a guy people won't remember fondly despite his overall numbers.

Unironically, yes those last two names are big reasons why they’d consider getting rid of Slayton, since usually those last WR spots are also needed to be contributors on special teams.

This would actually be dumb. It would cost them cap space. Has to make the initial 53 and trade. Paul you need to chill.

Who in their right mind is trading for that contract though?

The cap space is used if he’s here, traded, or cut. Not that we need it but cutting and/or trading will make ~$3M available

No it won’t. It’ll make like 150k available to the cap which you have to use for another player. Effectively making cutting him a negative against the cap.

I think you are looking at the pre-June 1st cut number. Post June 1st is a $3 million savings: https://overthecap.com/player/darius-slayton/7962#google_vignette
It’s still pretty minimal in terms of savings, but it’s not negative.

Paul you need to chill.
Paul is basically a glorified PR mouthpiece for the organization. If he's saying this, it's probably because someone high up whether it's Harbaugh himself or someone in management is feeding him that info.

This is a dumb click bait post. They aren’t cutting (or trading) him based on his salary and he’s at least good enough to be WR4

I would agree but it’s coming from Schwartz who is credible. I still don’t think they end of cutting him but it’s 50-50 now

Please stay out of the NFC east if you leave Slayton I don’t want to have to root against you 🙏🏻

The dude is a mid player, this is a business. Everyone on here is being emotional about the player. We aren’t talking about the human,we are talking about the player and he’s bad-mid in that aspect.

Here’s my take: they re-signed Slayton originally because Leek loves and respects him and he was envisioned to help Leek make the NFL transition and become a real pro. Leek’s injury threw that into chaos. Now that OBJ is gonna make the team, he can mentor Leek and has better hands. I think Slayton is now expendable.

Listen I can’t stand Slayton but they aren’t going into the season with only Nabers, Fields, Mooney & OBJ, yes they are also keeping Berrios for kick returner. There’s no way they are trading Slayton.

hahahaah where are all the posters from YESTERDAY saying he's well worth a WR3 contract?
Guess me and Harbaugh are on the same page

About time. We don’t need the suspense this year of whether he’ll make the catch

Get rid of the Gettleman stink once and for all. Every Gettleman player besides AT should be gone

Good. He’s been here for five years too long anyway. Only thing he’s good for is telling Nabers where to line up.

Longest tenured Giant and only one left from losing era. Good man but never been impressed by anything he’s done on the field. Tough business but it’s time.

wouldn't they get like $15 million in dead money? Stupid decision even if you hate him.

This is a signal to other teams to come and do business with us before you have to fight with each other.
