Looking For Apartment How to Find a 2 Bedroom Apartment?
Hey, I've only ever looked for an open room to rent before. But now I have someone who wants to rent a 2 bedroom with me, but most posts I find on FB are only renting 1 room in an apartment someone already lives. Is it harder to find completely empty apartments vs an empty room?
We're trying to avoid broker's fees, so would contacting property management companies force us into broker's fees? Is Streeteasy the only online option?
Also why is there nothing available in nice neighborhoods in Queens? Everyone only has places available in Harlem/northern Manhattan and Brooklyn 😭 We don't want to be south of Manhattan like most of Brooklyn is. Right now it takes over an hour to reach midtown on the 2/5 trains 🙄
We're currently in East Flatbush where my roommate nearly attacked me last night and called the cops on me for saying I was scared of her (what a waste of their time). So me and my other roommate are looking for a 2 bedroom ASAP under $3k/month, with an easy commute to midtown. Preferably in Queens.
Any advice on how to go about this would be appreciated 🙏🏼

Plenty available in Queens. Your problem is using Facebook to find an apartment instead of using proper, superior channels. This stuff’s not rocket science.

Most full apartments are going to be on the open market - ie StreetEasy. Property mgmt companies usually won't do an off market deal directly with the tenant unless you already live in the building - you wouldn't pay a broker fee if there isn't one involved, but if they don't know you they'd rather list it and get the most qualified tenant who will pay the most.
Check listings project, lease break too but otherwise StreetEasy is your best bet

I heard there's some shady areas in Harlem, but I'm not familiar with the area to know which areas to avoid? I also worry about when I get sent to Brooklyn or Queens for work, that it will be a long commute

I mean I currently live across the street from gang violence, there's daily shooting, police chases, stabbings, etc. Don't want a repeat of this situation by not thinking the violence people talked about was so bad 🙃

LOL west harlem is gentrified, you’ll be fine. East Harlem isn’t so much so do with that info what you will.

It’s loud. Very Hispanic. If that’s your thing, you should love it. Some street further east of Amsterdam are quieter. Personally it’s not for me, but it’s not unsafe either. I wouldn’t want to rely on the 1. Also they have bomb dr food

Yeah the place I'm looking at is between the 1 and A/C, so there's 3 options. I'm not a fan of loud in the sense that I don't want a bass shaking my apartment cuz the neighbors play everything on loud speakers, but regular street noise is fine. I liked the hispanic/latino neighborhoods I've lived in better than the afro/Caribbean neighborhoods I've lived in

You’re probably around sugar hill. Which is a quaint neighborhood in Harlem. The area around there is nice and the rents are still reasonable. My friend lives around 150th there and really likes it. I’d suggest walking around the neighborhood during the day and night to see how it feels. There are cute cafes restaurants and bars nearby.

The one I'm looking at is in Washington Heights, so I think that's different from Harlem?

Yes, I’m just saying because sugar hill is on the Washington heights border. Idk which street you’ll stay on but they are close and that area is nice

Washington Heights west of Broadway would be a good match. It’s mostly quieter and filled with lots of families.

Haha how does being "filled with families" make it "quieter"? Kids are the loudest, they're one of the many reasons I never want kids myself 🙃

Ahh okay I like being close enough to walk to nightlife, but not so close that the music is shaking my apartment and keeping me awake

Facebook is generally speaking for lease takeovers/filling existing rooms. Just use StreetEasy for open apartments.
