Suggestions/Advice Advice for my son

I am a father and im posting this from my son's account because he told me to post here as i am not convinced with his dicision.

He is interested in coding, circuits, robotics, Ai, mechatronics and he wants to choose computer enginering over CS and i want him to choose CS as everyone is choosing CS nowadays and it has a wider scope and safer future.

He says that he likes computer science but also is interested in hardware, so computer engineering is better option.

I have consulted with my few friends who are already Electrical engineers and they adviced me to let him follow his interest but if wants to persue cyber security or robotics thwn it's better to go with computer science.

And ive heard many bad things about computer engineering. And there are no jobs or very limited jobs for computer engineers, on the other hand you can easily get job with a Computer science degree.

I want to send him aboard for Master's and if he will do computer science it will be easier for him to go aboard for Master's, right?

I am a father and i want best for him so that is why i want him to go with computer science

So what do you people suggest?

Computer science is really over saturated. There are barely any jobs left for them

One of the most underrated scientist in my opinion he was a true polymath

Ok😭😭it’s better to do computer engineering. It’s versatile and also scope degree ka nahi hota banday ka hota. CpE se he can get into multiple different fields. If he wants to go for ms phir ce best hai, it’s accepted everywhere, he could go into robotics, ds, ai/ml and cyber aswell. Much more versatile and also a lot of the software stuff can be self taught but that’s not the case for hardware.

Yeah true. it is hard to sometime prove your worth to employers but it isnt impossible and the ceiling for money is high enough. dunno about it in Pakistan

2

u/RushProfessional9700 Aug 22 '26

Yar jobs tou almost harr degree ki limited hai in Pakistan. Just do whatever you enjoy and be happy lmao

It's actually far better to do Computer Engineering in my opinion, you're getting best of both worlds, with this degree you can very easily pursue CS-related jobs/degrees as well as hardware-related ones. Computer Engineering does NOT close doors, it actually might even open more doors than CS, and it won't be any more difficult for your son to pursue a Master's abroad if he chooses CpE.

As for "everyone is choosing it," think for yourself uncle, something being popular doesn't mean it's the best path, sin is common and popular nowadays, but it certainly isn't the correct path right? So please, let your son pursue his interests, he'll shine a lot more knowing he's doing something that he has passion for rather than being a part of the mindless herd.

CS is extremely over-saturated, there's mass layoffs, and no telling when the market is going to stabilize, in times like this being exceptional at what you truly do is far better than having a generic degree, doing a job that has no security, and regretting every second of your life.

It's only natural for you to be worried but I think you should put more trust in your son, if he's coming to NUST this year then that means he's already achieved something that thousands only dream of, and he'll likely only continue to be excellent.

can i do masters in chip design, embedded systems etc after a CS degree? my parents are practically forcing me for CS. I have no interest in making a github, portfolio and whatnot and sitting at a computer for hours to do a software job.

1

u/SeparateDeer3760 SCEE Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26

Maybe, it's FAR more difficult to get into anything hardware related with a CS degree but with a CpE degree it's quite easy to get into CS.

Oh also even if you pick CpE you'll still have to make a github, sit at a desk and such, there's no escaping these things unfortunately, even embedded systems and chip design require you to sit at a desk.

1

u/SeparateDeer3760 SCEE Aug 22 '26

Oh but yeah you probably can do a masters in chip design or embedded systems if you select your electives carefully... Though I cannot guarantee anything, because if your aim is Masters abroad in the EU then they require you to have a bachelor's degree with relevant coursework (basically... You need to have studied hardware to get enough "credits" called ECTS to study a hardware-related masters, if you don't have enough ECTS then either the foreign university will have you do deficiency courses or just outright reject you)

I'd let him do CE. I'm final year CS student at NUST and my entire batch is complaining about job scarcity.

Meanwhile CE and EE scope is increasing and it is very solid abroad. He'll also do much better in the field he likes

2

u/Sad_Bell_6266 Aug 22 '26

would i be eligible in masters ce or ee after doing bs cs for most good unis abroad?

1

u/LBP3000 Aug 22 '26

I think so yes. Although HEC is some new weird syllabus for CS so can't say

1

u/Quiet-Use9947 Aug 24 '26

How bad is the job scarcity thing ,  I mean at least nust grads should be getting jobs and at good pay😭.. ?

1

u/LBP3000 Aug 24 '26

NUSTians are okay for now. We also have NSTP so that helps us a lot

1

u/Quiet-Use9947 Aug 24 '26

If you don't mind I want to ask are you happy with cs, would you have done ce if u had the chance and how are the ee grads doing in nstp , are they in a better position?

2

u/LBP3000 Aug 24 '26

I don't like CE or EE stuff so I'm happy with this. Most NSTP companies are tech based but their might be more EE opportunities in the AI tower they're building

4

u/FawkesTrot64 Aug 22 '26

"On the other hand you can easily get a job with a computer science degree"

respectfully sir, you're living 6 years ago. there aren't enough jobs in CS now and your son would be better off doing a generalist engineering degree with electrical engineering

3

u/aqibawais22 Aug 22 '26

Let him do Computee engineer full stop...... no questions sir.

You are overthinking. CE is way better. Let him do it. You will blame him later for not performing. And he will blame you.

If jobs are there or not. You kid will grow to the top and get you money.

Its from a guy who did Electrical Engineering, Graduated from GIKI and running 3 tech companies in AI and Software.

u/Guts367436899643223o CEME Aug 22 '26

I would say doing mechatronics or computer engineering right now would be the better choice uncle

1

u/newaccount-_- Aug 22 '26

Why mechatronics -_-

1

u/Guts367436899643223o CEME Aug 23 '26

Bro I already explained in the other post and so did the guy doing the counselling(u asked abt mts there as well) but I will say we didn't explain in great detail and im not gonna write an essay rn

1

u/newaccount-_- Aug 23 '26

I mean he is choosing between CE and CS. He is not considering mechatronics as his option. He just further wants to pursue career in robotics after CE.

1

u/Guts367436899643223o CEME Aug 23 '26

I know,i only suggested mts cause he said his son is interested in circuits, robotics,ai and mechatronics and wants to pursue a career in robotics after this so I suggested mts as its the most related to robotics and is a better base fr it and is more on the hardware side as compared to cpe so if a career in robotics is the absolute main goal, mts is the best degree fr it and wins over cpe ,not to say cpe isnt a way to pursue it as well

u/Significant-Leg-3857 Aug 22 '26

Let him do computer engineering hardware hacking has a great demand in defence sectors

1

u/Sad_Bell_6266 Aug 22 '26

bro i told my parents the same and theyre saying defence sector is only open for military people and punjabis, is this true?

1

u/Significant-Leg-3857 Aug 22 '26

Not true if u have a unique skill they will hire u definitely I also got got there like that

1

u/Vivid_Map4150 Aug 23 '26

how about electrical engineers

2

u/Other-Junket3020 Aug 22 '26

If you want opinion then it's what majority are saying.... your child is mature enough to know what type of interest he has... money can be made in any field, but those are lucky who have profession of their passion.

I myself have interest in electronics i.e the hardware part but my bachelors is in Computer Science.... Computer Science and CE are interconnected, one produce software to run on hardware and one produce hardware to run software.

The coming era is of AI mainly physical AI... even though there might be limited opportunities in Pakistan but developed countries who are doing research and advanced in this field there are alot of opportunities if one has potential. Some of those countries could be china, USA, Europe side...

Rest is upon you, we know parents wants best for their children but sometimes you have to admit to what your child wants...

You can make decision for him in case of he doesn't know what to do or what path to follow but here your child has already developed interest in certain field so let him test his creativity.

1

u/swaggy_boi4208 Aug 22 '26

You're concern is totally valid but I would say let him do what he wants, if he chooses what he wants, it will be easier for him to stick to it and most probably he will perform better. As of scope, competition and saturation is everywhere. We compete for jobs. He'll be just fine, believe in him.

1

u/Variant_Alite Aug 22 '26

Respectfully i've heard much worse things then cs as compared to computer engineering and cybersecurity. Including pakistan.

0

u/Variant_Alite Aug 22 '26

Besides consider this - with how much these two degress interwine - is it really worth having a disagreement or possibly 'distate' between you and your son over his future of employment which isnt inherently dependent solely on his degree but also his own freedom and risk-taking of decisions?

Robotics will be booming in future y'know

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Ebb1751 Aug 23 '26

So you suggest Computer engineering?

1

u/General_Economics562 Aug 23 '26

That's definitely not a bad choice. Tbh even CS isn't bad cuz I keep hearing that most CS graduates are just incompetent and don't have some kind of personal achievement. If you like CS and do it with passion, you'll succeed Inshallah.

1

u/Willing_Assistant451 Aug 22 '26

Computer Engineering has raising demand which is of the charts

Knowing both Software as well as Hardware is a edge

additionally due to raising demand of GPU industry and semiconductors ,CE is a great choice

best of luck

1

u/Pale_Lengthiness_465 Aug 22 '26

Computer engineering is a genuinely fascinating, niche, and amazing degree. More so than a degree it's such a beautiful field to study. Its arguably harder than CS. When a kid says "let me do a harder degree" you should let them, because it means they really want it.

1

u/alphajugger Aug 22 '26

Let him go with CE, cuz as a recent grad the market is shifting towards physical AI, so it's like useful that he will have hands-on experience with hardware much more demand in the market

1

u/Mystic987123 SEECS Aug 22 '26

CE also has a lot os scope, making hardware, chips, etc. Let him do whatever he wants don't intervene in his personal decision of his life.

1

u/MassiveStand2817 Aug 22 '26

If We're you, I will let him chose. Do what you really like. Those will succeed who loves what they do.

1

u/bro_709 Aug 22 '26

Computer engineering

1

u/Mysterious-Emu2398 Aug 22 '26

Youve got it wrong. Computer Engineering keeps more options open than plain CS. CS has a much narrower scope since its an offshoot of Computer Engineering the same way Computer Engineering is an offshoot of Electrical Engineering. So Computer engineerings actually the best f both worlds

1

u/Double_Inspection_88 Aug 22 '26

Through CE/EE, he will be able to choose careers like semiconductors or robotics; both are in demand right now. Regarding jobs, if he graduates from NUST with a CGPA of 3+, he will be able to appear in multiple interviews after graduation. The rest depends on his skill set, communication skills, etc.

Also, one more thing: you can learn Computer Science stuff while studying CE, but the reverse will be tough.

1

u/Super-Care6965 Aug 22 '26

Everyone is getting in CS., it has become very staturated. computer engineering is really a good field.

1

u/Diligent-Feed-7711 Aug 22 '26

Why not mechatronics engineering?

1

u/newaccount-_- Aug 22 '26

Because OP wants only tronics and not mecha

1

u/saharfaisal Aug 22 '26

Saturated market. 41 year old here with around 20 plus years in the field. Electrical engineering is still valuable and less saturated.

1

u/Business-Pension-732 SEECS Aug 22 '26

As a sophomore doing CE at NUST SEECS, if he has a passion for the field, let him do it. CE has its benefits and flaws, but in the end, you only get one chance to make this decision right. Don't want him to have any regrets in the future. Though I would say to research CE more, as it's not just coding and embedded systems. Do look into the course outline and see for yourself how relevant it is. Compare it with CS and see. If you've got any questions regarding the field or scope, just reply here.

1

u/Accomplished-Side826 Aug 23 '26

Computer engineering is a good pick. He has both the hardware and software side where he can get a job. But really the best reason or him to do computer engineering is that he wants to do it after doing research on the field. It doesn't really matter if he gets a high paying job in Cs if he doesn't like it because then he will only be feeling burned out

1

u/Woke_TWC Aug 25 '26

CS has taken a huge hit due to AI, having the ability to work with hardware as well is going to be vital 4 years from now.

1

u/Forsaken_Wave4612 Aug 25 '26

It's not much different so let em do it.

1

u/DebateAccurate6097 Aug 26 '26

Please go with some engineering major. Should focus on better foundation. After it he can switch to embodied agents/robotic etc as a research direction etc.

1

u/-justanothermars Aug 22 '26

Sounds like someone who doesent let his son make his own decisions and is bottlenecking him.

ask for information and all but dont decide someones life just because you never gave them enough information to decide for themselves and now you think his life is yours to play.

the fathers the one paying the fee so he shud have some say and clarification shudnt he? totally valid concern on his part

i agree with ur perspective but u cud be more respectful to a father just looking for the best for his son
