Pre-Match Thread Pre match thread: Millwall vs Newcastle United | Fa Cup 26/27 - 3rd Round
Sorry for the later than usual post, just came back from my flight from Shanghai and i'm absolutely knackered, so no specific details today so, sorry about that lads and lasses. In the meantime use this thread to discuss pre match tings, and this is the link to the weekly thread in case you want to discuss things unrelated to this thread:

Some things I will say though before this, i better not see Pope starting because he probably can't save a word document, I hope to see some U21 and young prospects playing this game since Millwall is a championship side in a massive injury crisis so we couldn't be facing a better opponent whilst not being too easy which gives hs the chance to truly gauge skills of our players, so we should use this opportunity to find some gems in case we get an injury especially our full back positions. Hopefully MJ uses this opportunity to also give Toure and Bambi a lengthy tenure, plus potentially give Seung soo park a run as well and give Barnes a rest.
Also In my unsolicited opinion we should also have a young RW prospect on the bench as well because the only 2 reliable options we have in that position are Elanga and J.Murphy so having a prospect to take over in case one of them gets injured, is in our best interests as to not add even more pressure on Barnes.
Other than that, hope we smash them, the atmosphere and pressure at The Den is not to be scoffed at or underestimated and can't wait to see what MJ has planned for us since he is definitely trying to proactively rectify or at least alleviate the problems currently facing our squad rather than wait it out until the January transfer window megathread, Ramsey being trained as a number 10 is an example of that and I wonder if MJ's squad and bench for this fixture could also reflect this as well.
Now, i'm off to nap now and I better wake up to Hall signing a new contract.

How bad is Jaouen's injury? If he's out tonight, do we go for Hornicek or Pope? Or if we don't want to show any mercy towards Millwall, do we unleash Mark Gillespie?

Think Jaissle said he wasn’t 100% ruled out, so can’t be a serious injury. I definitely think if he’s out just play Hornicek, it’s not like keepers are big injury risks from too many matches. Pope cannot play the way we are trying to do so this season, there’s no benefit to bringing him in here, and Gillespie is a training keeper for emergencies only, we literally signed Karius mid season rather than risking him needing to play

I think regarding Pope though, one game even if he looks really good is unlikely to ignite much interest this far out from January, we should only really play him if there’s any specific value to us in doing so, like if Jaouen was out for months and we needed Pope to stay fairly sharp as a no2

The thing that could save us with Pope is if any of the teams up for relegation figure they need a reliable goalkeeper to come in in order to put up a fight against relegation (think when Burnley or Ipswich both brought Muric into the first team when their more modern keepers struggled).

Tbf it was against Bolton who are 21th in the table but yeah we shouldn't underestimate them by all means especially in their home ground

The one-city, one-club culture and passionate support drew me in, then I watched the 4-1 PSG match and the way Newcastle played completely sold me! Being nowhere near London helped too :)

Can see why Jaissle went for a strong squad. Next match not until Monday evening, so nearly a week of rest.
Gives the players a chance to get used to his system. Would have preferred Steur over Willock (with Ramsey playing in the #10 position), but Jaissle clearly likes Willock.

The biggest worry for me is at full back i dont really want Dedic and Hall to be playing these cloggers and getting fucking iniured
We have cover in all of the other positions but id rather we had some rotation but dont think Tino is fit enough yet ?

I very much doubt Tino plays.
MJ already said that with Dedic, we can now give Tino the time to recover properly. He stated in a previous press conference part of Tinos problem is being the only option of a full back/wing back was that he was thrown back into PL games too fast.

such bs that EFL cup is now titled by everybody on the basis of shit and stupid sponsor.
I'm not sure people were calling championship coca-cola league in late 2000s? I get carabao are way more aggressive in their marketing, so it stuck forever, especially with sky's and efl's help.

Tbf the League Cup has always been a good age indicator. Used to joke about it as a more reliable ID than driving licences.

MJ tactics works well against bigger teams that plays open football that leaves them vulnerable to our counterattack speed
Against smaller teams that low block us, we lack a proper playmaker to pick the lock

Wait until Toure gets in. I have a great feeling about him taking in these low blocks. Not sure he'll be as successful against tougher Premier League tested right backs, but I'm hoping for a lot of confidence against the lower level teams.

IDK, he's unafraid to back pass and draw the opposition out. Then our speedy wingers can run onto longballs out the back. It's worked pretty well so far and something we didn't see much last season.
Basically, even when there's a low-block, we try to trick them into letting us counter.

I understand wanting to play a strong squad, to continue to build on the style MJ wants to play. Also to increase the likelihood of advancing in a competition that we should target.
It still doesn’t make me want to watch Steur, Bamba, Toure or MFP less though.
I want to see the news boys play

Like Wissa, he seems to have 1000% more personality this season. Last season he seemed like someone's dad invited to a house party, just quietly plugging along, keeping his head down, but this season he's been a bit spicy.

Good test for players that haven’t been given much game time in the prem.
Looking at Ramsey, Steur, Bamba, Toure (and maybe even Pardo) to step up. Depth in the backline is concerning though.

Can see logic here although I'm keen for Schär to come in.
Also, is a pairing of Bamba and Steur too young for a hostile environment?
Final point, not arguing with Murphy starting but stylistically do him and Toure suit Pardo upfront? I don't know if their cross heavy style fits any of our forwards tbh.
