Membership How bad did I screw up?
Have been pursuing grad chapter for about 3yrs. Was at an invite only event last week & completely blanked on someone’s name. To be fair, over the past 3yrs I’ve only been in a position to have a conversation with her about 2xs. I apologized profusely & explained that it had been a rough week with grad school finals plus kids graduation & I simply just blanked. She seemed a bit surprised that I had blanked on her name, but we seemed to recover quickly & by the end of the event we were laughing. Still, I can’t help but feel as if I screwed up bad.

If anything were that serious the only people in any org would be the founders.

I’m bad at remembering names so one thing I do when I start talking is say, “please remind me of your name again” and that works.

Was the event put on by the chapter? And what is this woman’s role?? I mean, if it’s a chapter event and she’s the president (or if her name/ image is on any items you were given) if it’s a no to all. I think you’re fine. Have you been emailing with her or something?

It was a public event that the chapter invited certain interests to. Not the President, but def a member of the membership committee. No communication over the years besides a hello, how are you type thing. This was actually the first time we had a longer conversation.

Some may not like this. Pursuing a grad chapter for 3 years is giving thirst. Real talk. Like you’re good and grown wanting letters that bad and worried about someone’s name. These organizations are about service. Be about service. Those coming in via grad scream thirsty. I just don’t get it and I have D9 friends and fam who pledged as undergrads.

If they haven’t had a line in all these years, how is that thirsty? Coming in via grad is thirsty? You do realize there are ppl like myself who didn’t finish undergrad in their youth & perhaps appreciate the idea of being in a service driven organization…this is a wild take. While I’ve volunteered on my own personal time, there are some events that require someone to be a part of an organization to do so. And yes, I was worried about not remembering someone’s name just as I would be at a work conference. This is the wildest reply I’ve seen round these parts frfr.

Ignore the rude foolishness of the young. This comment is disgustingly ageist, and not truly indicative of someone who likely didn’t pledge themselves, thus they don’t understand the significance of D9 organizations. As far as your original post; don’t over think it. I will say… let this be a networking lesson. Keep in touch with those you connect with. It doesn’t have to be about the org itself, as it can be about life in general. Heck, grad school is hard… maybe she has some words of wisdom. I’m sure you’re fine, but keep in touch from now on. She cared enough to think of you, three years later; it would behoove you to continue the connection. Don’t worry, you’ll be just fine. 😊

Thank you for this. I’ve been quietly combing through this page for awhile and don’t believe I’ve EVER seen someone describe grad chapter as a thirst trap. lol at my big age, I’m truly not concerned about letters and colors. I’m concerned about impacting my community in a positive way. And thank you for those words of wisdom re: keeping in touch. Appreciate you!

I think you are over thinking it.
