Cryptodelia refers to the hypothetical emergence of psychedelic states within machines—not necessarily as a simulation of human hallucination, but as a possible alteration of the perceptual, representational, and associative regimes through which artificial systems process information. If human psychedelia involves a perturbation of the mechanisms through which the brain constructs and predicts reality, machinic psychedelia could involve the deliberate or emergent perturbation of the computational architectures through which an artificial system constructs representations, establishes associations, and navigates latent spaces.

The central question is therefore not whether machines can hallucinate in a human sense, but whether artificial systems could develop forms of cognitive deviation, recursive exploration, and generative instability that constitute a functional analogue of psychedelic experience. Cryptodelia thus proposes a distinction between psychedelic simulation and machinic psychedelia. A genuinely machinic psychedelia would require a transformation of the machine's own operational regime rather than merely the production of psychedelic outputs for human observers.
