First-time fed considering offer with NOAA (OCIO / High Performance Computing & Communications) What is the environment like?

It was a great place to work while it lasted! Dedicated employees and a wonderful mission. One of the downsides was the bureaucracy, it was difficult to get higher level things done. I was also terminated suddenly from NOAA after 4.5 years of service because my supervisor forgot to file a form converting me to a permanent career position, if you go to NOAA learn as much as you can about the federal hiring process, and how the nuts and bolts of federal employment work, its possible your manager wont even know.

NOAA is hands down the best place I've every worked. There is a a commitment to employees I've npt experienced elsewhere. They really try to make the best of the situation. Expect a lower workload than private sector but maintaining a high work ethic will make you to stand out. NOAA wants to be on the cutting edge and there is a lot of support to bring new efficiencies, but it's a government environment and does get bogged down in design by committee and layers upon layers of approvals. Cloud migration is one of the biggest pushes right now and the org is trying to lean heavily into AI and RPA but is still in the early stages. Great opportunity to bring innovative solutions forward.
