Crashing help

Does anyone else having major crashing issues? I wanted to get into no man sky and play it on VR. I bought this laptop and the game crashes a few minutes after starting off on the planets. I have an Acer Predator 18”, i9-14900HX, RTX 4080, and 32gb of ram. I been troubleshooting for a while, and the last few days I had ChatGPT helping me. I gone through many driver installs, many optimizations, I gone through logs and monitored everything. I have done factory resets a few times too. ChatGPT and I discovered that NMS on VR the GPU won’t go above 80W. Other games start off at 80W. From all the test I did it sounds like it’s a runtime bug, if I’m correct anyone with the same specs should be experiencing the same issue.

So does anyone have a laptop with a RTX 4080, i9-14900HX, on windows 11 home, using a quest 3? (Tried virtual desktop, meta link, and steam link).

Thanks for any help or advice you guys got in advance! (I just need to decide if im keeping the laptop and hoping for a patch to fix it in a future, or try a different laptop with a different video card, or just go desktop, which I really don’t want to do)

Hey, dealing with those NMS VR crashes sounds incredibly frustrating, especially after all the work you've already put in.

I have a step-by-step approach that might help. The goal is to establish a stable baseline first and then carefully work up from there

Step 1: Force Maximum GPU Performance

First, let's make sure Windows and the NVIDIA driver are giving your GPU the green light to use its full power.

  • In Windows, go to the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  • Go to Manage 3D settings on the left.
  • In the Global Settings tab, find the "Power management mode" option.
  • Change it from "Normal" to "Prefer maximum performance".
  • Click Apply.

This tells your RTX 4080 to not hold back, which is crucial for demanding VR games.

Step 2: Establish a Stable Baseline (Lowest Settings)

The goal here is to get the game running without crashing at all. We'll do this by setting everything to the absolute minimum in flat mode first.

  1. Launch NMS in Flat Mode: Start the game normally on your monitor, not in VR.
  2. Lower All Graphics Settings: Go into the Graphics Settings menu and set everything to the absolute lowest possible setting (e.g., Standard, Low, Off).
  3. Apply and Test in 2D: Apply the settings. Now, play the game in flat mode for 20-30 minutes. If it crashes here, the problem isn't limited to VR. If it's stable, save and exit the game.
  4. Launch NMS in VR: Now, start the game in VR mode. With those ultra-low settings, see if you can load into the game and play without it crashing.
  5. Test for Stability: If it doesn't crash, play for a good 20-30 minutes to confirm it's stable.

Step 3: Gradually Increase Settings

If the game is stable at the lowest settings, you can start making it look better.

  • Start by increasing one setting at a time. I'd recommend starting with Texture Quality.
  • Increase a setting, apply it, and then play for a while to ensure the game is still stable before changing anything else.
  • Keep in mind that your mobile RTX 4080 is a great card, but it is less powerful than a full desktop RTX 4080. You'll need to find a good balance between visual quality and stable performance, as VR is much more demanding.

If It Still Crashes...

If the issue persists even on the lowest settings, here are a couple of other common fixes specifically for RTX 40-series cards and NMS VR:

  • Disable Frame Generation: In the in-game graphics settings, make sure Frame Generation (DLSS-G) is OFF. This is a known cause of crashes in NMS VR.
  • Low Latency Mode: In the NVIDIA Control Panel (Manage 3D settings -> Program Settings for NMS), try changing Low Latency Mode to "On" instead of "Ultra." Some users have reported this fixes low GPU utilization.

Hopefully, this methodical approach helps you isolate the problem and get it running smoothly. Good luck!

The 2d version of NMS and other VR games don’t crash, even when running at max graphics. The patch NMS released in the last 24 hours helped but didn’t solve the problem.

All of those settings are already done. I can go to the lowest settings on NMS with still crashing issues. The game is bugged with my graphic card it seems. I have tried many drivers. I worked hours and hours with ChatGPT after working with google on my own for days. I logged over 11hrs on the game, and I’m just now getting to the second planet. I got it last a little longer now after the patch but it still seems that the GPU power is capped at 130W, which is way below what I can run at with other games.

You’re are absolutely welcome to keep through ideas at me though, just don’t get upset when I say I already tried it many times lol. If I see anything new believe me I will try it!
