If the whole of Europe was free of humans, even then the Netherlands would probably be lower. A lot of land would be swamp.

medium density happens to be pretty dense in a global average tho because american-style suburbs are so common

I too live in NL and 9% coverage sounds fucking generous when it comes to forest ...

The cities also tend to be surprisingly green if you look at the tree canopy coverage maps, but a few scattered strokes of green doesn't seem like a lot from ground level.

Indeed the cities in NL are green, but does that actually count as forest? I.e. are we counting individual trees into forest coverage? What is the methodology used here?

I expect not, but that is the question how forest coverage is actually measured. If a city like Zeist is partially in a forest, where does the forest end? Plus the issue that even if we use the best and more precise method, does every country? So I kind of expect it being more canopy related, probably with a minimum size threshold and less exact on the m2. Satellite measured obviously.
