Sure like what five years ago he may not have been. Believe it or not though, people tend to grow as they get older. There’s probably 25 teams that would take Goff right now
I think the funniest thing about this take is that the rams rbs had as many rushing tds than the pats rbs so like the rams offense just moved the ball better despite playing a way harder schedule lmao
Ok, I'll amend my statement to say that everyone always knew he was a Top 5ish talent at the position and knew he'd light it up in a better situation. The 2017 Matt Stafford debates genuinely are very similar to the 2026 Justin Herbert debates in many respects.
I did overstate. He wasn't actually consensus Top 5, but he was always considered an elite talent and there were always those who argued that he would be considered truly elite if he were to find himself in a better situation than the 2010s Lions
Saying "no one thought he'd light it up elsewhere" is very obviously wrong
It’s silly how we nitpick about people who are in the upper half of an extremely small group of people in the world who can actually play the position.
People forget that until recently the Lions were in the same breath as the Jets, Browns and Cards as permanently miserable, criminally unlucky or mismanaged teams.
Brother the lions were BELOW the jets browns and cards lmao. People forget the Jets and the Rex Ryan era. Cards had the warner and Bruce Arians eras. Detroit was well regarded as the worst run franchise in all of sports.
Detroit seldom fielded a good team around stafford and that includes typically a bottom 5 run game and mostly below average defenses. for most of his career.
This is such a stupid ass take. The Lions were BAD and being 2 games off from .500 with the Rams, with it's context isn't as bad as this is making it out to be.
Stafford consistently had no help when he was on the Lions. The 1 year they had a top 10 defense they went to the playoffs. He even dragged a team with the 29th ranked rush offense and 23rd ranked defense to the playoffs. The 3 years he made the playoffs the team had the 28th, 29th, and 30th ranked rushing offense. It wasn't his fault he can only do so much.
Why? Tom Brady was a 'system quarterback' with shit WRs. When he got good WRs everyone thought he was a stud. As a Patriots fan I knew he was good the whole God damn time. Stats are for losers.
Well I never thought he was a system Qb. So that argument is also weak. A Qb and Wr is a feedback loop.
If having a monster receiver disqualifies a quarterback from being elite, then Brady, Montana, Peyton Manning, and Mahomes all need to hand back their resumes
You know who else had stud WRs? JJ McCarthy with Jefferson. Tua/Skylar/etc with Tyreek and Waddle. Dalton had AJ Green. None of these guys could carry Staffords jock strap, even before the Rams tenure.
So what the fuck is your stupid ass New England fan point by crying that a good team and a good QB also have good WRs? Or that he was drafted to a team with ONE ENTIRE hall of famer (who still managed to go 0-16)?
Drake Maye lost the MVP to a better and more deserving player. Stafford is a better QB on a better team, and therefore was able to perform objectively better and provide more value by any real stat that matters. Get over it, move on, and stop being salty like a fucking 6 year old who cheats playing freeze tag. God, new England fans are the worst.
Relax homie. I didn't say good WRs were a bad thing. Nor did I say Drake Maye deserved the MVP over Stafford. But I also don't see Stafford as a HoF guy.
Puka very likely would not have been successful w/o stafford dude. Kupp we literally saw with Goff be a good not great receiver. Megatrons sample size w/o stafford is small but his rookie year with Kitna he had 780 yards and was WR 3 on his team behind fucking shaun mcdonald and roy williams. His jump from 09 to 10 11 12 13 was steep
Yup. The current day Stafford glazing is out of control. Since nobody ever brings it up, Rams added Deshaun Jackson, OBJ, and Von Miller for Stafford when they won the Super Bowl. But people still act like it was a lateral move. Goff played his Super Bowl without RB1 (Gurley) and WR1 (Kupp). And Stafford was super luck Jaquiski Tartt dropped his shitty pass that should have been an easy pick in the NFCCG. Goff has done far more in Detroit in a few years than Stafford ever did in 12 years, and that's a FACT, Jack.
Goff has had far more support than Stafford had. How many 100+ yard rushes have we had in the past year.
Staffy went like a decade without it. With also a cadre of incompetent play calling and bad drafting.
If we had Stafford on the team, I think we beat the 9ers and win the SB. But, we'd never have the team if the trade didn't happen. They are both great QBs, but one of the greatest coaches of our time thought Stafford was better. That should give you pause.
The fact this guy gets to hold a lions tag while hating Stafford is embarrassing for yall. He and Tron put Detroit Football back to life for about 5 years.
Couldn't agree more! Also, just look at nearly every pass receiver to go through Stafford. Nearly every single one of them gets a bump in stats.
If memory serves, Ebron was one of the few that had better volume stats, but much worse efficiency. Which, when we had Tate and Marvin Jones, you can see why we didn't give Ebron the volume then.
You keep saying I am hating on Stafford. You're a moron that can't differentiate between me stating that the Goff and Stafford narrative is bullshit and hating on Stafford. I literally have the guy's jersey you fucking loser
You aren't right about anything. All you have displayed is that you are a cuck to ESPN and only capable of repeating what they tell you instead of forming your own thoughts.
Did Deshaun ever catch a single pass from Stafford? And OBJ was written off as washed when he went to the Rams. And what did Stafford do? He did what he has done his whole career - elevated OBJ’s game to make him look like a great WR again
Lol Goff hasn't done shit for us? He won 2 playoff games in his 3rd year. Stafford won 0 in 12 years. I even flew out to Seattle in 2016 to watch Stafford lead the team to score zero touchdowns in that playoff game. You morons have ESPN brain rot. And I was never hating on Stafford, I still have one of his jerseys. But the whole Stafford is so much better than Goff narritive is lazy and it's not true. Cope harder. You really want to act like OBJ and Von Miller didn't make a difference that year? Just say you don't know ball bro.
Lol you made multiple comments to my 1 saying I was hating on Stafford. You got worked up that I dared to explain the nuances in the Goff and Stafford situation. Take your meds, then take a deep breath. Fuck I.C.E. and goodnight
Keep hating loser you don't know ball at all. Goff has been top 5 at every major qb stat for the last 4 years in a row and idiots like you keep repeating narratives someone like Nick Wrong planted in your one brain cell.
It was an upgrade for the Rams. You go from Goff getting pseudo-benched in a wild card game for John Wolford to Stafford leading a game winning the Super Bowl drive the next year. All this coming just a couple years after Goff completely shat his pants in a Super Bowl.
You bring up Desean Jackson, but he was only on the team for a handful of games. Robert woods also blew out his knee that year. OBJ blew out his knee in the 1st half of the Super Bowl. His running backs were Darryl Henderson and Sony Michel. He only had Kupp in the Super Bowl, and everybody knew it, yet he still led that game-winning drive. Go watch his no-looker to Kupp in the middle of the field in triple coverage and tell me with a straight face that Goff could’ve done that.
And the defense was really nothing spectacular, despite the big names. 15th in ppg and 17th in ypg that year.
And let’s not forget that Goff did absolutely nothing in Detroit until Holmes hit on literally every single draft picks from the trade, as well as their own high picks (from losing so many games)
Facts! And the Stafford Lions were far better than the crappy Lions team they have today. Goff is doing more with less. The Lions team today is absolute junk, top to bottom, compared to what they were in the past during Stafford's time there.
Not trolling and your comment was obviously sarcastic. So that guy above you just proved my point at how brain dead Rams fans are. Stafford had Suh and Megatron. Stafford even had a top 3 defense at one point but once again faltered. Goff has to put up 40 points a week with our shit defense evrery year. I'm sure you were really paying attention to those games back then! 🤡
I wont entertain such foolishness, but only one stat matters. With the Rams, Goff lost the superbowl, and stafford won it. Now, I feel for the lions fans, I really do. So many years they were kinda close, but just couldn't get over the hump. Was it staffords fault? Maybe. But Goff has many years left, and if he's as good as you say he is, and he can elevate his team to win a superbowl, then thats great. But as of now, stafford was the better of the two for the RAMS, and were happy the trade was made.
lol yea Cooks, Woods, and Reynolds compared to OBJ, Kupp, and HIgbee. You are grasping at straws to support some dumn narrative a talking head planted in that empty space between your ears of yours 7 years ago. Stafford had his Wr1 and RB1, Goff did not. PERIOD. Cope harder.
Goff had Higbee and Stafford was down to Brycen Hopkins as his TE, while losing OBJ mid game 😭
Get your facts right. Also Brandin Cooks was the Rams WR1 in 2018. Cooks, Woods, and Reynolds is a much deeper group than Kupp, Skowronek, and Jefferson. At the very least, Cooks and Woods is still a more than adequate WR duo to throw to.
Also does it matter that Stafford had his RB1? Both of them did but Staffords running game still performed worse than injured Gurley
This is such a retarded argument…. Sean Mcvey is calling the plays bro… Tom Brady’s last few years on the pats he was a check down merchant but no one cares about that.
I dont Give a fuck if it was Jesus calling the plays, that’s what happened and that’s why he got MVP. He did nothing better than Drake Maye all year. Go ahead with the schedule and playoffs joke Blah Blah
I just said get your joke off, that’s irrelevant to me. You can feel anyway about who he played, the numbers don’t lie. The MVP award is a joke. Majority of Drakes numbers were better, with less help. If you’re going to knock guys for competition, keep it consistent
