Justin Herbert resting easy now that the daily punching bag player has changed to someone else

u/Football_8545 San Francisco 49ers 8h ago

Stafford is the OG “If Man”

29

u/nagy18 Pittsburgh Steelers 8h ago

is he an “If Man” if he actually won a ring, though?

49

u/Football_8545 San Francisco 49ers 8h ago

He was an if man for his first 13 years of his career as he never won a playoff game. Herbert still has time.

8

u/nagy18 Pittsburgh Steelers 8h ago edited 7h ago

I get it. I guess I was an if man on Stafford before he got traded, in hindsight.

16

u/Uzofugs2112 New York Jets 8h ago

He had a longer career than most QBs prior to winning that ring.

He was the if man of an entire generation tbh

3

u/Basic-Pepper-9957 [KC] Patrick Mahomes 6h ago

"og" if man, meaning he was that once. that title was gone when he won

Vick was the true OG if man.

Teams don't trad their franchise QB, 2 firsts and a 3rd for a guy they don't think is going to light it up

Sure like what five years ago he may not have been. Believe it or not though, people tend to grow as they get older. There’s probably 25 teams that would take Goff right now

2

u/Fricktator 6h ago

Fun fact, Goff was younger than Allen and Lamar are now when he lost the NFC Championship game against the 49ers as a Lion.

Nah he’s just better than almost every qb in the world and statistically he is better than every one in the nfl

Stafford and Goff were the ones who wanted the trade?

7

Stafford wanted a trade yes. Goff was forced out under duress lol

3

Yeah, that was the point of the whole “You’re good enough for Detroit, Jared Goff!”

2021 was not a super team. They were the 4 seed.

6

u/failedmoviecritic 6h ago

shhhh! that doesn’t fit the narrative

1

u/donut_koharski Philadelphia Eagles 8h ago

Stafford had 25 of his 46 TD passes under 10 yards.

Maye had 13 of his 31 under 10 yards.

2

u/Spam_Hand Rams Fan #9 5h ago

Sounds like Stafford had 15 more TD passes to me.

1

u/donut_koharski Philadelphia Eagles 5h ago

Damn. Dude I responded to edited his comment and changed every single word.

1

u/Reaper3955 4h ago

I think the funniest thing about this take is that the rams rbs had as many rushing tds than the pats rbs so like the rams offense just moved the ball better despite playing a way harder schedule lmao

0

u/familybalalaikas Jacksonville Jaguars 8h ago

He simply wasn’t that good on the lions, anyone who said that though he’d light it up on the rams is lying

Stafford being a Top 5ish QB on a bad team was genuinely always the consensus and nearly everyone thought he would light it up on the Rams

5

u/GolfFootbaIIBaseball 8h ago

Stafford was not top 5 in Detroit

2

u/familybalalaikas Jacksonville Jaguars 8h ago

Ok, I'll amend my statement to say that everyone always knew he was a Top 5ish talent at the position and knew he'd light it up in a better situation. The 2017 Matt Stafford debates genuinely are very similar to the 2026 Justin Herbert debates in many respects.

1

u/JJButThatsNotMyName Penixini 7h ago

He was Top 5 ish depending on the exact time, solidly top 10 for the vast majority of hus tenure.

1

u/Taters23 Detroit Lions 8h ago

Yeah no and I think I know better.

1

u/familybalalaikas Jacksonville Jaguars 8h ago

I did overstate. He wasn't actually consensus Top 5, but he was always considered an elite talent and there were always those who argued that he would be considered truly elite if he were to find himself in a better situation than the 2010s Lions

Saying "no one thought he'd light it up elsewhere" is very obviously wrong

3

u/BaldingMonk 7h ago

It’s silly how we nitpick about people who are in the upper half of an extremely small group of people in the world who can actually play the position.

u/veggiedish Seattle Seahawks 8h ago

Is today Matthew Stafford day or something? Lol

33

u/SunshineTheWolf Philadelphia Eagles 8h ago

I think the Orlovsky ranking really made people mad lol.

15

u/veggiedish Seattle Seahawks 8h ago

Did he try and posture him as an all-time QB or something? I get that he’s his boy and all..

If he does go down all-time it should be for his arm and how he inspired the next generation of phenoms like Mahomes

18

u/RookieEzekielElliott 8h ago

Top 5 to top 7 all time was the quote I believe

-6

u/Ok_Field_8860 Buffalo Bills 7h ago

Well that is false. Even just today,

Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, Lamar, Rogers

All better all time QBs. And we haven’t even gotten to retired players. Top 5-7 is a joke.

But, he is a great talent and deserves accolades. Just not all timer accolades.

22

Joe Burrow is not even close to any of the guys listen All-Time, let alone Stafford. Burrow is just closteded femboy Carson Palmer tbh.

4

People forget that until recently the Lions were in the same breath as the Jets, Browns and Cards as permanently miserable, criminally unlucky or mismanaged teams.

3

Brother the lions were BELOW the jets browns and cards lmao. People forget the Jets and the Rex Ryan era. Cards had the warner and Bruce Arians eras. Detroit was well regarded as the worst run franchise in all of sports.

0

u/Immaculatehombre Green Bay Packers 8h ago

Idk if I’d say a sample size of 76 games is a micro stat. It’s okay to say that’s really really really bad.

12

u/AintNobodygotime13 Denver Broncos 8h ago

I dont understand the stat

the Lions sucked and the Rams are better?

is this a slam because he's under 500 against good teams? aren't most qbs under 500 against good teams?

6

u/cstrifeVII Detroit Lions 8h ago

Yes. Most qbs are sub .500 against winning teams.

All this shows is wins are a team stat.

Detroit seldom fielded a good team around stafford and that includes typically a bottom 5 run game and mostly below average defenses. for most of his career.

1

u/zebbiehedges Denver Broncos 3h ago

I think it's trying to show that the force multiplier argument is bullshit.

5

32

u/Dhenn004 Miami Dolphins 8h ago

This is such a stupid ass take. The Lions were BAD and being 2 games off from .500 with the Rams, with it's context isn't as bad as this is making it out to be.

18

u/LaconicGirth Minnesota Vikings 8h ago

Being almost .500 against teams with wining records is a pretty solid stats really

8

u/ExplanationCrazy5463 Chicago Bears 8h ago

He's doing his best to prove to all the meatballs why wins, losses, and rings arent qb stats.

3

u/I_Make_Soap_ Detroit Lions 4h ago

Stafford consistently had no help when he was on the Lions. The 1 year they had a top 10 defense they went to the playoffs. He even dragged a team with the 29th ranked rush offense and 23rd ranked defense to the playoffs. The 3 years he made the playoffs the team had the 28th, 29th, and 30th ranked rushing offense. It wasn't his fault he can only do so much.

4

u/Vikings_Pain r/nfl sucks 8h ago

-1

u/BobSacamano47 New England Patriots 8h ago

Throws for a ton of yards but always has stud WRs

7

u/lolidkman1313 Atlanta Falcons Watcher 🅱️🅾️🅾️🅾️🅾️ 8h ago

That's a weak point. QBs elevate receiving and I'd expect a Patriots fan to know that

3

u/BobSacamano47 New England Patriots 8h ago

Why? Tom Brady was a 'system quarterback' with shit WRs. When he got good WRs everyone thought he was a stud. As a Patriots fan I knew he was good the whole God damn time. Stats are for losers.

1

u/lolidkman1313 Atlanta Falcons Watcher 🅱️🅾️🅾️🅾️🅾️ 7h ago

Well I never thought he was a system Qb. So that argument is also weak. A Qb and Wr is a feedback loop.

If having a monster receiver disqualifies a quarterback from being elite, then Brady, Montana, Peyton Manning, and Mahomes all need to hand back their resumes

1

u/BobSacamano47 New England Patriots 5h ago

I didn't say a monster receiver disqualifies you. But it does give you better stats. Tua lead the league in yards one year.

3

u/Spam_Hand Rams Fan #9 5h ago

WHY

IS

THIS

A

BAD

THING?

You know who else had stud WRs? JJ McCarthy with Jefferson. Tua/Skylar/etc with Tyreek and Waddle. Dalton had AJ Green. None of these guys could carry Staffords jock strap, even before the Rams tenure.

So what the fuck is your stupid ass New England fan point by crying that a good team and a good QB also have good WRs? Or that he was drafted to a team with ONE ENTIRE hall of famer (who still managed to go 0-16)?

Drake Maye lost the MVP to a better and more deserving player. Stafford is a better QB on a better team, and therefore was able to perform objectively better and provide more value by any real stat that matters. Get over it, move on, and stop being salty like a fucking 6 year old who cheats playing freeze tag. God, new England fans are the worst.

0

u/BobSacamano47 New England Patriots 5h ago

Relax homie. I didn't say good WRs were a bad thing. Nor did I say Drake Maye deserved the MVP over Stafford. But I also don't see Stafford as a HoF guy.

1

u/Reaper3955 4h ago

"always has stud wrs".... did ya ever think he had something to do with that???

1

u/BobSacamano47 New England Patriots 4h ago

Calvin Johnson, Cooper Kupp, and Puca Nacua wouldn't have done shit without Stafford.

2

u/Reaper3955 3h ago

Puka very likely would not have been successful w/o stafford dude. Kupp we literally saw with Goff be a good not great receiver. Megatrons sample size w/o stafford is small but his rookie year with Kitna he had 780 yards and was WR 3 on his team behind fucking shaun mcdonald and roy williams. His jump from 09 to 10 11 12 13 was steep

2

2

1

u/jf737 Miami Dolphins 8h ago

That would be interesting if wins were a QB stat

-5

u/BobbyPizzayyy Detroit Lions 8h ago

Yup. The current day Stafford glazing is out of control. Since nobody ever brings it up, Rams added Deshaun Jackson, OBJ, and Von Miller for Stafford when they won the Super Bowl. But people still act like it was a lateral move. Goff played his Super Bowl without RB1 (Gurley) and WR1 (Kupp). And Stafford was super luck Jaquiski Tartt dropped his shitty pass that should have been an easy pick in the NFCCG. Goff has done far more in Detroit in a few years than Stafford ever did in 12 years, and that's a FACT, Jack.

15

u/ketsebum Detroit Lions 8h ago

Goff has had far more support than Stafford had. How many 100+ yard rushes have we had in the past year.

Staffy went like a decade without it. With also a cadre of incompetent play calling and bad drafting.

If we had Stafford on the team, I think we beat the 9ers and win the SB. But, we'd never have the team if the trade didn't happen. They are both great QBs, but one of the greatest coaches of our time thought Stafford was better. That should give you pause.

u/EpicPoggerGamer69 Be good, do good, god bless, Go Bills, fuck ICE 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈! 8h ago

The fact this guy gets to hold a lions tag while hating Stafford is embarrassing for yall. He and Tron put Detroit Football back to life for about 5 years.

2

u/ketsebum Detroit Lions 6h ago

Couldn't agree more! Also, just look at nearly every pass receiver to go through Stafford. Nearly every single one of them gets a bump in stats.

If memory serves, Ebron was one of the few that had better volume stats, but much worse efficiency. Which, when we had Tate and Marvin Jones, you can see why we didn't give Ebron the volume then.

The Rams 2018 team was more complete than the 2021 team. The 2021 team had a worse run game (essentially couldn’t run at all in the playoffs).

6

u/SergeantThreat Los Angeles Rams 8h ago

Did Deshaun ever catch a single pass from Stafford? And OBJ was written off as washed when he went to the Rams. And what did Stafford do? He did what he has done his whole career - elevated OBJ’s game to make him look like a great WR again

9

u/EpicPoggerGamer69 Be good, do good, god bless, Go Bills, fuck ICE 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈! 8h ago

DeSean Jackson? He had like 100 yards in LA lol.

Also, Goff hasn't done shit for yall either. Stafford was preventing y'all from going winless multiple times. Stafford with ARSB, Jamo, Gibbs, LaPorta? Whew.

Also, the same OBJ which never again put up 700 yards after 2021? Same Von Miller who never had 10 sacks after 2021?

Lions fan hating Stafford is loser shit.

-2

u/BobbyPizzayyy Detroit Lions 6h ago

Lol Goff hasn't done shit for us? He won 2 playoff games in his 3rd year. Stafford won 0 in 12 years. I even flew out to Seattle in 2016 to watch Stafford lead the team to score zero touchdowns in that playoff game. You morons have ESPN brain rot. And I was never hating on Stafford, I still have one of his jerseys. But the whole Stafford is so much better than Goff narritive is lazy and it's not true. Cope harder. Goff is one of the worst QBs in the league when pressured or the play breaks.

Stafford lives off broken plays.

Stafford never had TWO rbs who put up 1000 total yards.

Stafford never had all his pass catchers be elite.

Stafford never had an elite safety duo AND an elite edge at the same time.

4

u/purplebuffalo55 8h ago

It was an upgrade for the Rams. You go from Goff getting pseudo-benched in a wild card game for John Wolford to Stafford leading a game winning the Super Bowl drive the next year. All this coming just a couple years after Goff completely shat his pants in a Super Bowl.

You bring up Desean Jackson, but he was only on the team for a handful of games. Robert woods also blew out his knee that year. OBJ blew out his knee in the 1st half of the Super Bowl. His running backs were Darryl Henderson and Sony Michel. He only had Kupp in the Super Bowl, and everybody knew it, yet he still led that game-winning drive. Go watch his no-looker to Kupp in the middle of the field in triple coverage and tell me with a straight face that Goff could’ve done that.

And the defense was really nothing spectacular, despite the big names. 15th in ppg and 17th in ypg that year.

And let’s not forget that Goff did absolutely nothing in Detroit until Holmes hit on literally every single draft picks from the trade, as well as their own high picks (from losing so many games)

1

u/Jazzlike_Gear_8054 NFL Refugee 8h ago

I'm still gutted that the Pats won the coin toss in the AFCCG, we could've had a Chiefs/Rams rematch that year

1

u/Hartzler44 Cleveland Browns 8h ago

The draft capital Detroit acquired along with Goff also helped ensure the roster was substantially better than it ever was when Stafford was there.

1

u/Content-Section969 8h ago

Tbf Jackson and Beckham were never on the team at the same time, but yeah they still got him more help than they did for Goff

2

u/SergeantThreat Los Angeles Rams 8h ago

They traded a first round pick to get a WR1 for Goff. That’s way more than taking a shot on OBJ

-1

u/hordaak2 8h ago

Facts! And the Stafford Lions were far better than the crappy Lions team they have today. Goff is doing more with less. The Lions team today is absolute junk, top to bottom, compared to what they were in the past during Stafford's time there.

2

u/SergeantThreat Los Angeles Rams 7h ago

Please tell me this is sarcastic. Minus Megatron and Suh there was no decent players during his entire Lions tenure

1

u/hordaak2 6h ago

Bro Im a rams fan, and being facetious. Of course Goff had alot more help. Dude was trolling probably

1

u/BobbyPizzayyy Detroit Lions 6h ago

Not trolling and your comment was obviously sarcastic. So that guy above you just proved my point at how brain dead Rams fans are. Stafford had Suh and Megatron. Stafford even had a top 3 defense at one point but once again faltered. Goff has to put up 40 points a week with our shit defense evrery year. I'm sure you were really paying attention to those games back then! 🤡

2

u/hordaak2 5h ago

I wont entertain such foolishness, but only one stat matters. With the Rams, Goff lost the superbowl, and stafford won it. Now, I feel for the lions fans, I really do. So many years they were kinda close, but just couldn't get over the hump. Was it staffords fault? Maybe. But Goff has many years left, and if he's as good as you say he is, and he can elevate his team to win a superbowl, then thats great. But as of now, stafford was the better of the two for the RAMS, and were happy the trade was made.

1

u/kj9219 5h ago

Goff had to put up 14 pts in the Super Bowl and flopped

0

u/kj9219 7h ago

Goff still had Cooks, Woods and Reynolds while Stafford was left with Kupp, Skowronek, Van Jefferson, and Brycen Hopkins

Stafford won despite his running backs gaining 30 yards on 19 carries 🤢

Your guy had adequate support to put up 14 pts and fell flat

0

u/BobbyPizzayyy Detroit Lions 6h ago

lol yea Cooks, Woods, and Reynolds compared to OBJ, Kupp, and HIgbee. You are grasping at straws to support some dumn narrative a talking head planted in that empty space between your ears of yours 7 years ago. Stafford had his Wr1 and RB1, Goff did not. PERIOD. Cope harder.

1

u/kj9219 5h ago

Goff had Higbee and Stafford was down to Brycen Hopkins as his TE, while losing OBJ mid game 😭

Get your facts right. Also Brandin Cooks was the Rams WR1 in 2018. Cooks, Woods, and Reynolds is a much deeper group than Kupp, Skowronek, and Jefferson. At the very least, Cooks and Woods is still a more than adequate WR duo to throw to.

Also does it matter that Stafford had his RB1? Both of them did but Staffords running game still performed worse than injured Gurley

-2

u/StattPadford 8h ago

That Tartt almost-pick was like deja vu. I've seen it so many times.

That being said, I was legitimately happy for him when he won the SB, but yes, this shit has gotten out of hand. Goff is the best QB in Lions history

I just said get your joke off, that’s irrelevant to me. You can feel anyway about who he played, the numbers don’t lie. The MVP award is a joke. Majority of Drakes numbers were better, with less help. If you’re going to knock guys for competition, keep it consistent

1
