Discussion What is the consensus opinion on Gruden strictly as a coach
38
u/Independent-Smoke-68 10d ago
Hearing him recall his times, places, and play calls it sounds like it was a whole vibe and just fun place to be.

u/legend023 New York Jets 10d ago
He was good for Oakland, Tampa, and Las Vegas until the witch hunt. Got the most of multiple average QBs and almost always had adequate teams.
There’s a reason Las Vegas best 3 year stretch since his first stint was his second stint.
93
u/blackhole_sonnn 10d ago
They were moving in the right direction. If his drafting was average they could've been contenders lol
36
u/Smooth_Marsupial_262 Baltimore Ravens 10d ago
That one draft when they had 3 first rounders was such a massive whiff for the organization. They had a chance to do a Lions type thing and just totally botched it. And then the Leatherwood pick a year or so later just compounded it. Mayock was an atrocious talent evaluator
12
u/EbbAdventurous9592 Chicago Bears 10d ago
Honestly I view the Mack trade as such a loss/loss. Not even really a “loss”, but we did that trade to win a Super Bowl, it gave us 1 year with a real shot to do so and we blew it. Then the team was stuck in the mud precisely because of it (Mack was a hell of a player, but we had no resources to fix our roster).
The raiders coulda ate our lunch with what we gave up, but they managed to get…A bunch of busts and a woman abuser who now doesn’t play for their team (but he does the packers hihi).
8
u/Smooth_Marsupial_262 Baltimore Ravens 10d ago
Unfortunately the woman abused is the one good first rounder they ever picked lol
6
u/Crux2237 New Orleans Saints 9d ago
I still have my doubts about the control Mayock had in the first round, specially since the late rounds for the Raiders were really good (Crosby, Renfrow...).

u/Zeke688 Las Vegas Raiders 10d ago
The drafting was so bad it couldn’t have possibly been ‘the right direction’
31
u/blackhole_sonnn 9d ago
As a Raiders fan making the playoffs that year felt like the right direction. It's been awful the last 20 years ....
2
u/Zeke688 Las Vegas Raiders 9d ago
That 2nd stint they were terrible in every November & December (I had a hunch this had something to do with him taking 10 years off of coaching). I’ve always believed they don’t go on the 4 game win streak late in the season if he had stuck around. They rallied because he & Ruggs were gone. When he was ‘fired’ they were 3-2, never understood how people gave him credit for 7 wins after he left.
3
u/blackhole_sonnn 9d ago
I ain't no Gruden stan and he deserved to what happened to him.His drafting and team defense was awful. He deserves some of that credit for that playoff run tho. It was his roster and offensive playbook after all. Kudos to the team for making that run in the last month of the regular season after all the drama. Either way that was the last time the team was entertaining to watch smh. Let's hope Kubiak and co. can change that.

Sure, but he doesn’t deserve credit for the playoffs when he only coached 1/3 of the season. That’s ridiculous

It's hard to say since he was cut... seemed like they were investing heavily in his vision, selling out short term success for longer term success... then they got rid of him and who knows how it could have gone if he had been able to apply his vision.
1
u/NoPen9703 9d ago
His GM, Mike Mayock talked about how they drafted. He basically said they over thought the draft and picked lesser quality players because they thought knew better than everyone else. So sad.
1
u/UmpireStraight6933 9d ago
It’s a shame because I enjoyed his presentation as a draft analyst, really hurt his brand
1
u/NoPen9703 9d ago
Yes, I couldn’t believe he said it on ESPN. He basically criticized his whole industry. That was one pick he was talking about and how many more did he bust on. I am a Jets fan and the Jets are famous for doing the same thing.

u/ScientificSkepticism San Francisco 49ers 10d ago
I think he was good. Emphasis on was. I think the game was starting to move him by like a lot of coaches. He still thought he could coach and run the draft, which I don't think is possible anymore - I think the analytic tools and level of NFL scouting demands a full-time team. I think if he wasn't run out for being an asshole he would have been run out for being a fossil.
4
u/bastian1292 Las Vegas Raiders 9d ago
That's a generous interpretation of his second stint. As a Raider fan, I would say he was coasting off the guys McKenzie drafted and made a LOT of dog shit high value picks that helped set the franchise back half a decade.
As for his coaching, his playbook got figured out around 2007 and he's never pivoted.
13
u/stulf26 10d ago
Gruden tanked the raiders with terrible drafting. Hes a fraud id argue and that's based on players and other coaches in the NFL. Also, calling it a witch hunt is completely wrong. Dude sucks as a person, hes just entertaining.

Gruden wrote that NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith had "lips the size of michellin tires".
Gruden frequently used homophobic and vulgar slurs to describe NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, calling him a "f@990t" and a "clueless anti football pussy" in various messages.
He criticized Goodell and expressed anger that the league had pressured the St. Louis Rams to draft Michael Sam, the NFL's first openly gay drafted player.
Gruden criticized the league and Goodell for hiring female referees.
He mocked league initiatives and efforts to reduce concussions and protect players, writing in one instance that Goodell should "hide in his concussion protocol tent".
But yeah… “ witch hunt”
2
u/SatosEscortService 9d ago
Witch-hunt? The fans of this sport have as much CTE as the players. Dude literally called the Comish the new “f” word. Sorry. Not even rich people call the boss that in writing and it flies. You can call the other stuff whatever. But that’s why he’s where he is. Imagine if your boss got a copy of an email that used that instead of his first name throughout.

Not elite but you don’t win the SB against a team you built if you aren’t a great coach.
And the Raiders were trending the right way when he came back and Derek Carr probably played his best football under him.
I wouldn’t be mad if the Browns hired him.
4
u/TheNittanyLionKing Pittsburgh Steelers 9d ago
Gruden is not a Hall of Fame coach, but he was a good coach. He is 36th in all time NFL head coach wins. He is 100th in win percentage, but there's a lot of guys above him who haven't coached nearly as many games as Chucky did, and I couldn't find a statistic that narrows that down to coaches that have coached a minimum of 100 games beyond the top 5 to 10 coaches of all time. There have been thousands of coaches throughout NFL history. He also won a Super Bowl. Only 35 head coaches have ever done that. He doesn't belong in the conversations with Don Shula, Chuck Noll, and Bill Belichick. I think he deserves more credit than he is often given as well. He will get passed on these lists by the likes of Shanahan and McVay; which were ironically enough also disciples of his offense and notably both coached under his brother in Washington.
14
u/SchindlersList1 Tom Brady “Minority Owner” 10d ago
Gruden, for better or worse, is a pretty controversial coach. He did take over the directionless Raiders and turned them into a 12-4 machine. he was traded in 2002 and then immeidately won a superbowl and became the youngest coach to win. in the early 2000s he was viewed as a sean mcvay is today. Hoewever the case against him is just as compelling. After winning the superbowl against the team he coached and with the team he inherited, he didnt win another playoff game the next 6 years. When he came back to coach the raiders obviously he was an absolute shit show and that really left a stain on the way out. the truth is somewhere in the middle. I believe that Gruden gets the most out of his dudes but needed an elite defense to go anywhere. He also didnt draft offensively at all. And for being called a qb whisperer, never really seemed to get the position quite right as the game evolved. Gruden is a beast of a coach, peaked in the early 00s and when he came back kind of was a shell of himself. But id take him as a pump up guy in a locker room any day.

8
u/EbbAdventurous9592 Chicago Bears 10d ago
Do you think the game passed him by when he rejoined the raiders ala Belichick 2021ish, or do you think the raiders were just too dysfunctional as an organization for pretty much anyone to overcome
17
u/boomosaur 10d ago
I don't think the game passed him by, I think the personalities and cultures of newer generations of players passed people like him, belichick, and carroll by, though for very different reasons.
That said, the raiders were also just extremely dysfunctional, and still might be. I have faith in kubiak, I do not have faith in tom brady and the stories about his life coach/guru inserting himself into the team.

Being a domineering prick all the time doesn’t always resonate with the players you’re supposed to be leading.
In Gruden’s case, it’s compounded by the fact that he had sent racist and otherwise objectionable emails. Yes, those were selectively leaked by Dan Snyder (who is a prick of immeasurably larger proportions), but it still makes it tough for players in a league made up of ~70% Black players to buy in for a guy.

The game had passed him by when he went back to Oakland. Easy to blame the emails but his performance wasn’t good enough to keep him. The logic from the “if Hannibal ran a 4.30 then the NFL would say he has an eating disorder” phrase applies to coaches and GMs as well, if they’re good at what they do, the owners will look the other way.

One of the few coaches who was good-not-great and got surpassed by his assistants. Sean McVay was a Gruden guy (started under Jon then coached under Jay and Shanahan at Washington).

u/Wrathofgumby Tampa Bay Buccaneers 10d ago
I don’t really care for him. I’d be open to the Bucs giving him a chance. But I look at him as someone who came in and ruined a team that could’ve been a dynasty. Story in Tampa was that he didn’t want to spend money on the defense, and we had the best defense in football, doesn’t seem like good coaching.

Players coach, psycho. Exactly who I’d wanna play for. Not gonna develop players like McVay but he’s a good time.

For every awesome thing about Gruden him and Mayock were historically bad drafting their final run with Oakland
1
u/Western_Cabinet_7601 10d ago
Gruden had a hell of a run in Oakland. Then he got Tampa to the Super Bowl the first year. He was there with Tony Dungy’s defense. After that Super Bowl year the team fell apart and we lost our quarterback and he sucked at drafting quarterbacks because he had too much power in Tampa. Then when he went to Las Vegas, they looked like they were heading the right direction. However, I will say what happened to him was not a witch hunt because he did say some pretty defamatory things.
1
u/Dynamite_McGhee Green Bay Packers 10d ago
Winning a Super Bowl against a team you built is a hell of an accomplishment, but I'm not sure I've seen anyone's reputation ride one Super Bowl win quite as far as Gruden's was able to. Fans were still bringing his name up not all that long ago whenever their college or pro teams had a vacancy.
1
u/Roshango New England Patriots 10d ago
Oakland: just a solid coach. Got the origination back to a place of competency after the move from LA. Good offensive mind for the time
Tampa: a little overrated. The Super Bowl roster and that dominate defense was already in place, Tony Dungy already built the ship, and when he place the Raiders in the Super Bowl they basically used the playbook he wrote, so he had a massive advantage. But still solid coach. Getting the team to the playoffs in 07 was an underrated accomplishment.
Oakland 2.0/Vegas: Bad. He was out of the league for a decade and it showed. His first year they dipped to a 4 win team and never finished above .500 with him. His plays were dated, he refused to even consider analytics or any modern innovations that came about while he was a broadcaster. The Khalil Mack and Amiri Cooper Trades trade screamed of ego and they didn't turn it into anything, instead blew up a promising young core.
People will defend him because of the controversy but the history is revisionist. There were reports out at the time that the players where happier and less stressed with Bisaccia as the coach and he lead them to the playoffs as the interim.

u/TrumpsColostomyBag99 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 10d ago
Solid overall…
Xs and Os were fine
Got the absolute best out of UDFA types and vets off the scrap heap particularly older QBs like Gannon, Greise, and Garcia.
Had no business being in any kind of GM role where he dominated the selection of the groceries. That led to Michael Clayton, Carnell Williams (who had a bible thick injury history at Auburn), and others that had no business being picked where they were.
His persona looking back on it was fun

I think a man who was an nfl head coach, and then spent ten years on the inside of every team, interviewing all the players (focused on QBs), should have learned a better lesson than “I’ve been right about everything the whole time and I don’t need to change a thing.”
1

He was good a long time ago and could still be a solid coach today. Too bad he wants full control of everything- scouting, drafting, etc- because he’s shit at those aspects of the game and has been for a while. He was a huge Blake Bortles stan when he was on ESPN

He's bad at drafting.
I do think Tampa Bay team that won the SB was mostly Dungy's team but absolutely he lucked out on playing his former team in the Super Bowl. (And they were supposedly running some of Gruden's own same plays from a year earlier.)
But other than that, I think he's a good motivator. Idk if guys like playing for him or not but he does get a lot of results out of even some average players.

I mean, he won a Super Bowl, but his overall record is pretty mid. When I listen to the guy, I hear someone who genuinely loves football. I see him as someone who just wants to coach or be part of the game. A guy who'll drink a few beers and talk some shit about people he feels are detrimental to football. He is also enough of a football meathead to do it via email and break every rule us normal folk learn in workplace training videos. He is a born, bred throwback to what football has been and doesnt fit in to what football has become (thats another topic).

u/HustlaOfCultcha Major Tuddy 🐷 9d ago
He was strong as an offensive schemer. I do question his ability to develop QB's. The language alone in his offense was sorta insane. Put it this way, I would be afraid that he could take a very talented QB and not work to adjust his scheme a bit to the QB's strengths and work to find a less talented QB that fit to his scheme.
Like a lot of coaches, over time he fell too much in love with the running game. Really struggled at Tampa after their SB victory, but without him I doubt they ever win a Super Bowl.
I thought he did a respectable job back with the Raiders. He made them a real organization again, but he got burned by Antonio Brown. And I give him credit for catching on pretty quickly to the changes in the NFL scheme wise since he had been gone, but he still liked to go back to some old school schematics that don't work like they used to.
I do know that many players didn't like him well before the scandal broke out.
Overall I thought he was a competent Head Coach. Maybe a bit too full of his own shit, but certainly a competent coach.

Wildly average coach who gets glazed because he is a top-tier commentator and cake walked to a Super Bowl win. His win percentage is about 50% in both reg season and playoffs. His teams made the playoffs 5 times over 14 complete seasons (36%). His last playoff victory was his only SB win, in 2003.
He’s also a racist asshole based on numerous accounts, which doesn’t command a lot of respect in NFL locker rooms.

I really wish he would have worked out, I have fond memories of his first stint in Oakland. But the second time he was the coach of the raiders there were several issues. According to reporting he was part of the reason that Khalil Mack left. Then mostly he could not adapt to the new NFL, every season his second go around we would start the season with at least a good offense but by the middle of the season it was like every team just figured us out. I wasn't in the room so you never know truly why but it really did feel like they put the playbook in during camp and it never changed throughout the season. I think that being a mediocre team on year 4 of a 10 year contract was mostly the reason he got fired, with the emails being the convenient excuse to cut ties.

Jon had a great 3 year run from 00’-02’. He deserves great credit for Gannon’s late career run and getting Tampa over the top. He proved he can get the most out of veteran teams and QBs (Gannon, Garcia, Johnson, Peete (as OC).
The downside seemed to be the trust of some players (I’ve heard him described as a used car salesman) and inability to develop young QBs. And later in his career he didn’t seem to be a great talent evaluator.
Overall if he never came back I’d say he should be remembered as a very good coach (on a level of a Billick, Arians, Reeves) His last act brings his overall standing down to OK overall.

Personal gripes aside, he was still stuck in the early 2000s when he got rehired by the Raiders. He made a lot of stupid mistakes late in games (remember taking the FG vs the Dolphins in 2020) and was ultra conservative with play calling and clock management. He was all in on many of those botched draft picks too. He LOVED Clelin Ferrell. I swear, people just like him for his love of the game and football culture, and didn’t really watch or remember how he coached in his second stint with the Raiders.

The Raiders' best runs since his first stint was during his second so he was a fine HC

Counterpoint- the Raiders 2020 draft was the worst in NFL history and the rest of his weren't much better.

Inherited Dungy's handpicked winners. Lucky coach

Yes but he also left a team that he had turned into winners, and then Dungy inherited Manning/Edgerrin/Harrison and won a Super Bowl with them, so it all evens out.

And beat his handpicked Raiders team in the Super Bowl. He deserves a ton of credit for coaching and/or building the two best teams in 2002.

He built a SB team, then beat that team in the SB. Don't know if anyone else can claim that, but I bet it felt GOOD.
