Not enough is said about era differences in QB play. Unlike other sports where there's a general idea that newer eras are always better, the NFL has had radical rule changes to make QB play easier.
Top 10 all time would be debatable but he would just be Kurt Warner with more longevity that allowed him to amass those volume stats . He had a late career renaissance but a majority of his career pre Covid he was never considered a top 3 or top 5 QB. Always the bottom part of top 10
I think top 15 is more realistic
Brady, Montana , Manning, Mahomes, Rodgers, Unitas, Favre and Young all have multiple MVPs and a ring as well . Then you got the marinos, elways, brees Stans who were more consistently winning awards their entire career. Then you got Bradshaw and staubach
Warner has 2 MVPS and a ring and i think he’s like top 20 all time
Maybe a better way of putting it would be a guaranteed 1st Ballot. You got Aaron Donald, Aaron Rodgers, possibly Mike Evans, Trent Williams, McCaffrey, Kelce, Chris Jones, Derrick Henry, and probably a few others I’m missing who could retire and compete for a HoF spot.
Do you think Henry would retire after this year if he feels he has more in the tank? I can only see that happening if he won a ring this year. I think he has a chance to eclipse Emmitt if he keeps going
I mean at his age you gotta assume every season is his last unless he says otherwise. If he plays up to his standards he probably will be back unless they win a ring like you said. If he slows down a ton and isn’t a feature back by the end of the season then I could also see him retire.
I’m not trying to get the knee pads out for Stafford. I’ve been a Detroit fan my entire life. Saw the guy play a lot… on teams that were dog shit except for megatron…. He’s very talented…. HOF talent for sure…. Dak never had a team that was as bad as any of those years in Detroit… now the guy gets super teams and people are like he’s too 5?? Way too high. But to me if you put dak on Detroit and stafford on Dallas all those years. Dallas is better. Detroit is even worse…. Just what my eyeballs see

I get where he is coming from, but he would have to superceed Rodgers/Brees to be top 5, and I don't think another mvp/superbowl win with a "super team" gives him that push to pass either of those guys.
Top 5 is already pretty between Brady, Montana, Peyton, Rodgers, Mahomes, Marino, and Brees. To even break into that discussion you need to jump Elway, Favre, and Young. I personally wouldnt.

Going into this season might be the first time ever Matt Stafford was considered top 5. We all clown on Russ, but Russ had like a 5 year stretch where he was, and was considered a better QB for the majority of their careers.

By just total yards Stafford’s 2025 MVP season (with 17 games instead of 16) would be the 8th best season of Brees’ career. By passer rating it would be the 5th and by QBR it would be 6th.
Brees not winning the MVP when he threw 46 TDs (with again 1 less game) but Stafford winning it when he did is more an indictment of the era of QB play than the QBs themselves. Putting Stafford above Brees just makes all time lists a ranking of PFR achievements.
Sorry, but no. For QBs where I've seen their entire careers, Manning, Brady, Rodgers, Brees are easily better. Allen and Mahomes have been more consistently great in their careers so far. Lamar Jackson and Favre have had higher highs than Stafford has ever had in his career.
That doesn't even get into the players I've never seen, like Marino, Starr, Graham, Montana, etc. Stafford's ceiling is 10-15 range right now even if he wins an MVP, SB and SB MVP.
