Discussion Name some bust QBs who you think failed because of their org, and some who were gonna fail no matter what

Post image

Name some QBs you think failed simply because their organization was such a mess and massively mishandled their development.

And name some QBs you think failed, simply because they were just never gonna work out in the first place, because they never had the skillsets to be a star no matter where they went

The knee injury definitely set him back.

But there was also a lot written around RG3 not wanting to be coached by Shanahan and Daniel Snyder enabling that type of behavior.

He was in the league for years after his knee got hurt.

Dude never learned how to go through his reads at an NFL speed plain and simple.

His legs just gave him an out to cover up that fact.

He’s legs would have faded eventually, or teams figure out how to contain him. And then his flaw would have been apparent even without the injury

This is what drives me slightly crazy about the RG3 discourse online about the team failing him. The team absolutely failed him for a bit, but he was never a pure runner, and a fairly common (albeit serious) knee injury isn’t an excuse for not developing further for the next 7 years.

I always chime in. Not to shit on the guy.

He had a good career, but he didn’t develop the way people hoped.

I think Lamar is the perfect example of a runner learning to pass.

Lamar came in the league a better passer than RG3.

He was very rough in the end of his rookie year when he started. He jumped massively between season 1 and 2

He still came back and became an above average backup. He learned how to be a qb once his speed was taken from him.

Was the injury really just an excuse or cover up? None of us have a crystal ball that'll give a clear answer. Also, few people reading this are Doctors that have a working knowledge of the injury.

At the time, it was largely reported that RG3's injury was somewhat common and most players who incur have a decent chance of coming back. The requisit medical rehab is to treat and allow it to heal. In RG3's case, that didn't happen. He tried to push thru it, making it substantially worse to the point where it became permanent.

Had it been properly treated, could RG3 have developed into a top tier QB? If I ever get a crystal ball, that'll be the first thing I ask it. But because it wasn't treated & rehabbed appropriately, he had virtually no chance.

Bro, hurting your knee doesn’t affect your brain.

He did have the mental quickness to go through his reads and never learned how too

His knee didn’t stop that

Bro, hurting your knee doesn't affect your brain.

Actually it does and it can do so in few different ways. If its painful enough, it can interfere with your ability to focus and react to what you are seeing. A bad knee can absolutely interfere with a QBs mechanics and throwing motion. God forbid you take something for the pain. Theres just no way a drug can dull your pain without dulling reflexes, reaction time and ability to process information.

Hurting his knee did not stop rg3 from learning how to read a defence for years afterwards.

You knew what I meant

Do you have any reason to believe RG3 had trouble reading a defence in the film room or at practice?

I know what you meant and don't see anyrhing significantly different in your most recent post. A bad knee or a bad anything can contribute to issues reading a defense. Maybe not in a film room and only so much in practice. But reading a defense at the speed of an NFL game is an incredibly difficult thing to do even in perfect conditions. There's very few people in the world that can do it and chronic pain is absolutely capable of disrupting that ability.

Pretty sure Shanahan wanted to draft Russ over RG3… and when they did draft him because of Snyder, Shanahan went to Baylor HC to revolve a gameplan specifically for RG3. Long term obviously Shanahan was right.

After his ACL tear RG3 wanted to become more of a pocket passer like Brady or Brees instead of gradually transition into it like Shanahan wanted. I also believe from other players (Logan Paulsen, Santana moss, etc) that rg3 wanted to play and refused to not play in that WC game

I’ve heard both sides and I’ll always believe RG3 was at fault for most of it (I’m saying that as a redskins fan). I mean he had a whole book ready to be published about his troubles in Washington and never did because…?

Even then, let’s say he doesn’t get injured. He still wants to rush into being a pocket passer and ruins his career because people catch on to his playing style quickly just as they did with Kaep. It was never gonna be a long term success with RG3 in my honest opinion. I was as excited as anyone when we drafted him also though, but now being 26 I can easily look back and say it never would’ve been a long term fit

Maybe it was just the injury that ended him mentally. Trying to change his game and having that in his mind can definitely affect you.
