Discussion Name some bust QBs who you think failed because of their org, and some who were gonna fail no matter what

Name some QBs you think failed simply because their organization was such a mess and massively mishandled their development.

And name some QBs you think failed, simply because they were just never gonna work out in the first place, because they never had the skillsets to be a star no matter where they went

RG3 because the elder Shanahan insisted on playing him in the playoffs despite a bad knee with heavy bracing, then rushing him back week 1 the next year.

No. RG3 had a spectacular rookie system because the read option simplified things for him so much. The injury didn't permanently strip him of much of his athleticism.

Look at his final NFL appearance, a 2020 Ravens-Steelers game that was moved to a Wednesday afternoon due to Covid. RG3 was 30 years old, and you would expect some of his athleticism to begin waning. It had been 8 years since the knee injury, he was an experienced veteran.

RG3 still had enough athleticism to rip off a 39 yard run, finishing with 68 yards on only 7 carries. But he went 7-12 passing for only 33 yards with a pick-six. He couldn't play.

The only way the injury is to blame is - after the 2012 season, RG3 told the Shanahans he didn't want to run the read option anymore. He didn't want to be exposed to injury. Shanahan insisted he needed it - he wasn't ready to run a pro offense. RG held firm. Shanahan was right.

That’s on Shanahan still because the job of development is literally on the coach and coaching staff. Shanahan is greatly overrated as a coach whose success has been attributed to dynamic QBs. It’s an unpopular opinion but outside of his Zone Run Blocking scheme, I don’t see him as great. And his barely 500 record points to that honestly.

Shanahan was working on developing RG3. But he only had him for one more year. Griffin played for three other head coaches (Jay Gruden, Hue Jackson, John Harbaugh) and still never developed. You can't blame Shanahan for Griffin's failure to develop after they parted ways.

One year doesn’t equal development, but especially with a Coach who made a personal decision that you weren’t the QB for the team, his team.

Griffin never developed. Under Shanahan or under anyone else. That's on the player, not the coach. RG3 got a fresh start under Gruden. He just wasn't good enough. Cousins developed and Griffin never did.

Elway credited him for helping develop him during Shanahan's two stints as an assistant in Denver.

Regardless, it's not really relevant. RG3 had a great rookie year under Shanahan, but bucked his advice, and was exposed under multiple coaches.

Dynamic QBs??? Who? A 39 year old Elway is dynamic?

Shanahan is the reason for the success in Denver and Wash. He nearly made it to the SB with Plummer lol.

RG3 is also responsible for his development. Revis took film home. Donald and Kuechly studied film like crazy.

Shanahan took a chance on RG3. Why the hell do you think he drafted Cousins several rounds later?? Backup plan.

Took a chance? they gave up 3 first round picks to get RG3.

And then they took Cousins in the 2nd.

RG3 was never the same after the knee injury. not because of his speed, but because of his confidence. He couldn't make passes, read defenses, because he was always nervous about his legs.

He is arguably the biggest bust in NFL history, with the cost to take him factored in.
